Holiday tourneys under way
After wining the John Marshall Holiday Tournament by an average of 15.5 points, the Class AA No. 3 Bridgeport Indians (6-0) will be one of the eight teams in the Lincoln-McDonalds Holiday Classic at Lincoln High School.
The Indians join host Lincoln, Grafton and South Harrison in the girls division, while Lincoln, Grafton, Clay-Battelle and South Harrison make up the boys field. Games begin today in the girls field with South Harrison (3-3) and Grafton (1-1) at 4 p.m. Following that game, the Cougars (0-4) play Bridgeport.
Boys play begins at 7:30 with South Harrison (3-0) and Clay-Battelle, while Lincoln and Grafton finish the first night.
The Kermit Vanscoy Invitational gets under way today, hosted by Doddridge County.
In boys Class AAA, Robert C. Byrd (1-1) is one of eight teams competing in the Big "D" Holiday Tournament at the Woody Williams Armory in Fairmont. The Eagles tip off at 9 p.m.
n BROOKE 82, Bridgeport 80: Vince Veltri and Tyler Dodd combined for 59 points, but it wasn't enough as Brooke rallied for a win in the Brooke-Domino's Classic.
Veltri scored 32 points and Dodd followed with 27, connecting on seven 3-pointers. Bridgeport will play Edison, Ohio at 6 p.m today in the consolation game.
n CAPITAL 77, Philip Barbour 65: Jimmy Lawson scored 22 points to help Capital hold off Philip Barbour, 77-65 in the WJLS Holiday Tournament.
Hans Schubert led the Colts (1-3) with 15 points, and teammates Aaron Yeager and Matt Summerfield followed with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Girls Basketball
n NICHOLAS COUNTY 51, Lewis County 30: Jessica Ferguson scored 15 points, and teammates Kate Lucas and Bethany Nicholas each added 13 to help lead Nicholas County over Lewis County.
Lindsey Casto and Jaime Parker led the Minutemaids (4-3) with nine and seven points, respectively. Lewis County plays Princeton at 6 p.m. Friday.
