10K program shifts to race-day preparations

It's time to focus on race day.

With the fourth annual Greater Clarksburg 10K less than two weeks away, Tuesday's 10 weeks to the 10K program concentrated on race-day preparation. It was a short program, with Carl Hatfield opening by sharing a wealth of running preparation knowledge as well as a few amusing anecdotes.

Hatfield spoke about training over the last week before the race. He said participants should train Friday before the race, eat a meal Friday night and make sure to drink plenty of liquids with no alcohol. He also talked about the importance of getting lots of sleep days before the race.

On race day morning, Hatfield said, runners should not eat a meal, but should drink lots of water and make sure to warm up.

Hatfield was followed by Dr. Kyle McCammon, an emergency medicine physician at United Hospital Center, who spoke about the many benefits of running "beyond the race" and things runners can apply to their regimen after the race.

"For the people that have spent so much time training, I'd like them to take away the benefits of what they have gotten from training and have them apply that to other things in their life," McCammon said.

He said he wanted to shift the focus from training for a race to training for your life.

McCammon played a sound bite from the 10K at the 1964 Olympics, where unheralded American runner Billy Miller came away with the gold medal.

Next week, there will be panel questions and the 10 Weeks to the 10K graduation.
