Obituaries for Sunday, April 1, 2001

Oscar Lee Bassett

PINE GROVE -- Oscar Lee Bassett, 88, of Reader, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at the New Martinsville Health Care Center.

He was a son of the late Lash and Catherine Caylor Bassett.

His wife, Rosella Brown Bassett, preceded him in death.

Surviving are four daughters, Linda Adams and Sue Bassett, both of Reader, Catherine Carpenter, Lexington, Ky., and Terry Roberts, Smithfield; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two stepgreat-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Eugene.

Mr. Bassett was a Protestant by faith. He retired from the B&O Railroad, Pine Grove.

Friends will be received from 6-9 p.m. Monday at Palmer Funeral Home, Pine Grove, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Interment will be at the Straight Cemetery, Reader.

William B. Crawley Jr.

BRIDGEPORT -- William B. Crawley Jr., 71, of Cleveland, Ohio, formerly of Clarksburg, passed away Friday, March 30, 2001, at St. Vincent Charity Hospital.

He was born June 12, 1930, in Clarksburg, a son of the late William B. Crawley Sr. and Nona Batson Crawley.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Michael D. and Diann Crawley, Bridgeport; two sisters, Emma Lou Fleenor, Virginia, and Ginger Shultz, Georgia, and one brother, Donald Crawley, California.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Charles Crawley.

Mr. Crawley served in the U.S. Army

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 573, Clarksburg, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Cleveland.

A graveside service will be held at the West Virginia National Cemetery at 2 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Paul Boyles presiding.

Full military honors will be accorded at the cemetery.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Burnside Funeral Home, 607 South Virginia Ave., Bridgeport.

Mabel M. James

SOUTH CHARLESTON -- Mabel M. James, 80, of South Charleston, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at Valley Health Village after a long illness.

She was born in Buckhannon.

Her husbands, James Claude Bennett and Vernon R. James, both preceded her in death.

Surviving are one son, James R. "Dick" Bennett, St. Albans; one daughter, Susie Carole Straight, South Charleston; one sister, Betty June Sheppard, Buckhannon; one brother, Jimmy L. Koon, Bridgeport; five grandchildren, James and Jeff Straight, Yvonne Straight, Beth and Jimmy Bennett, and one great-grandson, Trenton Nathaniel Straight.

Mrs. James was a homemaker and a member of Rock Lake Presbyterian Church, South Charleston. She was also a member of Circle One.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. today at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Rick McGuire officiating. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. in Buckhannon Memorial Park, Buckhannon.

The family suggests donations to Rock Lake Presbyterian Church, Rock Lake Drive, South Charleston, WV 25309.

James R. 'Jim' Long

PINE GROVE -- James R. "Jim" Long, 74, of Reader, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at Wheeling Medical Park, Wheeling.

He was a son of the late John and Christina Gorby Long.

His wife, Betty Kocher Long, survives.

Also surviving are five sons, James R. Jr. and wife, Toni, Larry and wife, Lorna, all of New Martinsville, Roger and wife, Kimmie, Reader, John Marc and wife, Stannah, Paden City, and David and wife, Vicki, Moundsville; two daughters, Mrs. David (Sandy) Odom, Reader, and Mrs. Randy (Janet) Cecil, New Martinsville; one sister, Mrs. Jake (Bonnie) Higgins, Paden City; 14 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters.

Mr. Long was a member of the Church of Christ, Reader. He retired from Allied Chemical and Operating Engineers Local 132. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Friends will be received from 2-9 p.m. today at Palmer Funeral Home, Pine Grove, where the funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday.

Interment will be in the Milburn Cemetery, Reader.

Mary Elizabeth Moody

CLARKSBURG -- Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Moody, 82, of Route 3, Fairmont, formerly of 1802 North 18th St., Clarksburg, died at 3:15 a.m. Saturday, March 31, 2001, in the Marion Health Care Hospital, Fairmont.

She was born April 23, 1918, in Pricetown, Lewis County, a daughter of the late Charles Roscoe Taylor and Hadie Opal Gall Taylor.

Her husband, Elmer Moody, whom she married Sept. 1, 1937, preceded her in death on Dec. 14, 1997.

Surviving are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Charles L. Moody Sr. and Sharon, and William K. Moody, all of Fairmont; one daughter and son-in-law, Carol Sue and Chester Tharp, Clarksburg; one half brother, R. Kent Taylor, Elkins; four half sisters, Virginia Lee Travazano, Arizona, JoAnn Grasso, Ohio, Betty Carey, Fairfax, Va., and Patty Butcher, Buckhannon; four grandchildren, Tammy Jo Reese and husband, Jack, South Carolina, Charles L. Moody Jr. and wife, Tina, North Carolina, Shane Tharp, Scott Tharp, both of Clarksburg; two great-grandchildren, Whitney Nichole Reese, South Carolina, and Tiffani Nichole Moody, North Carolina; several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Delores Moody and Nancy Jo Moody; one sister, Virginia Robertson, and her stepmother, Wilsie Taylor.

Mrs. Moody was a member of Barnes Memorial Baptist Church, North View, where she had taught Sunday School for several years.

She enjoyed ceramics at the Clarksburg Senior Citizens, gardening and plastic canvas work.

Friends will be received at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St., from 7-9 p.m. today and 2-9 p.m. Monday, where the funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Ronald Bomar presiding.

Interment will be in the Waldeck Cemetery, Pricetown.

Laura Estabrook Romine

CLARKSBURG -- Mrs. Laura Estabrook Romine, 83, of Haverford, Pa., formerly of Wayne, Pa., died Thursday, March 29, 2001.

She was born July 2, 1917, in Flushing, N.Y., a daughter of the late James Mansfield Estabrook and Helen Slocum Nichols Estabrook.

Her husband, John Ransel Romine Jr., survives.

Also surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, David Estabrook and Kathryn Romine, Narberth, Pa., and one grandson, John Ransel Romine IV.

She was also preceded in death by one son, John R. Romine III.

Mrs. Romine was a member of the Unitarian Church, Devon, Pa. She was a college professor, having received her doctorate.

Friends will be received at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St., from 1-2 p.m. Tuesday. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Bridgeport Cemetery with the Rev. Craig L. Michel presiding.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Calcutta House, 1601 West Girard Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19130-1614.

Ann E. Pavichie

CLARKSBURG -- Ann E. Pavichie, 91, of Sunbridge Care Center, Salem, formerly of Riverbend Apartments, Clarksburg, died at 3 a.m. Thursday, March 29, 2001, at the center.

She was born March 16, 1910, in Independence, a daughter of the late Sherman and Mary Shrader Folty.

Her first husband, Charles Ahlers, and her second husband, Nicholas Pavichie, both preceded her in death.

Surviving are one sister and brother-in-law, Mary F. and William May, Clarksburg; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Sherman and Doris Folty, Baltimore, James B. and Wilda Folty, Fairmont, and Henry F. Folty, Baltimore; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Vonetta, Martha, Katherine and Mildred; and two brothers, infant Philip Folty and Paul E. Folty.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the Parrish Women, Sisters of St. Joseph Associates and the Clarksburg Women's Club.

She was a volunteer for the Mustard Seed for several years. She was a homemaker.

Friends may call at the McGlumphy Funeral Home/Chapel, 260 East Main St., Clarksburg, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today. Catholic burial rites will be conducted by Rev. Father Timothy Grassi at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the McGlumphy Church Chapel. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Eliza Victoria Philippe

CLARKSBURG -- Eliza Victoria "Betty" Philippe, 79, passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at the Wishing Well, Fairmont. She had been in declining health for the past seven months.

She was born Aug. 10, 1921, in Harrison County, a daughter of the late Fred and Gladys Ferguson.

Her husband, George E. Philippe, preceded her in death in May 1960.

Surviving are one niece, Phyllis Ann McElfresh Bowie, whom she raised and called daughter, and her family, Peter, John and Joseph Bowie; three brothers, John and wife, Mildred Ferguson and Charles Ferguson, both of Maryland, and Guy Ferguson, South Carolina; two sisters, Ruth Maxwell, Clarksburg, and Dorothy Huerta, Missouri; her cousins, Gerald and wife, Frannie Bartlett, Pa., and Joann and husband, Delmer Carmicheal, Arizona; one nephew, Norman "Ed" McElfresh, and many nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Fred Ferguson; one sister, Sylvia Garrett; and her beloved cocker spaniel, Lucy.

Mrs. Philippe was raised in the Marshville community. She was a 1939 graduate of Bristol High School. She had been a member of the Clarksburg Baptist Church, a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, and a homeroom mother for several years at Towers Grade School, Clarksburg.

As a sales representative for Avon in the early 60s she worked the Broadoaks area, and then worked as a clerk for several years at Mercers Drug Store. In 1970 she established a child care service in her home. For over 25 years she helped nurture and watch many, many children.

She was known for her great 12th Day of Christmas gatherings for her family and friends. She enjoyed gardening, baseball games, her dog and her "kids". She was always thoughtful and giving to all who knew her.

At Mrs. Philippe's request the body was donated to the West Virginia University Research Center. Her ashes will be placed in the family plot at the Marshville Cemetery. Arrangements are incomplete.

John Rote Sr.

RIVESVILLE -- John Rote Sr., 81, of Rivesville, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at his home after an extended illness.

He was born Feb. 2, 1920, a son of the late Joseph Rose Marra Rote of Rivesville.

His wife, Anna Caputo Rote, survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Joseph and John Franklin, both of Rivesville; two daughters-in-law, Twyla Eye Rote and Brenda Sweeney Rote; four grandchildren, Amanda, Abigal, Aaron and John Joseph; his sister, Katherine Rote Aguirre, his brother, Russell Rote, both of Newport News, Va.; and sister, Minnie Rote and brother, Anthony Rote, both of Rivesville.

He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Teresa, Thelma and Marie; and two brothers, Joseph and Frank.

Mr. Rote was a graduate of Rivesville High School. He served with distinction in the 479th Combat Engineers, China-Burma-India Theater of Operations during World War II. His unit was responsible for the construction of the Ledo Road and the reopening of the Burma Road. Upon discharge from the U.S. Army he briefly worked at the Fisher Body Plant in Cleveland, and in 1951 joined the International Association of Bridge Structural and Ornamental Ironworkers, Local No. 549 of Wheeling, of which he remained a member in good standing until his death.

He was a member of the Rivesville United Methodist Church, a 32nd Degree Mason (Preston County Lodge) and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 07048. Among his many contributions to the community Mr. Rote served as a scout master of Troop 31 and cofounded the Rivesville Samaritan House which over its 15 year history has served hundreds of area residents in need of food and clothing. In 1990 he was recognized by President Bush for his service to the community and was named a recipient of the Thousand Points of Light Award and is enshrined at the Library of Congress.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. today, 4-9 p.m. Monday and 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at the Ford Funeral Home, DeGarmo Chapel, Jasper Street, Rivesvile. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Stanley Merrifield officiating. Burial will be at Beverly Hills Cemetery. Marion County Veterans will observe flag-folding services in the funeral home following the service on Tuesday.

Duane Tate

HARRISVILLE -- Duane Tate, 73, of St. Marys died Friday, March 30, 2001, at his residence.

He was born April 16, 1927, in Harrisville, a son of the late Charles O. and Virginia Weaver Tate.

His wife, Betty Ruth Haddox Tate, survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Larry D. Tate, Richard L. Tate and Russell P. Tate, two daughters, Sandra Morris, all of Harrisville, and Susan Corbitt, Ellenboro; one brother, Hubert Tate, Wooster, Ohio; three sisters, Velma Prunty and Helen Jean Boyce, both of Harrisville; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Denver Tate; one sister, Evelyn Zinn; and one grandson, David Duane Lawrence.

Mr. Tate was a sergeant in the U.S. Army in the 398th Military Police Battalion. He worked as an oil field worker and well tender for many years and also worked at Ford Motor Co. He was affiliated with the Wesley United Methodist Church, Ellenboro.

Friends may call at the Raiguel Funeral Home, Harrisville, from 1-9 p.m. today and prior to the service which will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Harlan Hodge officiating. Burial will follow in the Harrisville International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery.

Sadie Geneva Westfall

BELINGTON -- Sadie Geneva Westfall, 92, of the Broaddus Hospital Long Term Care Facility, Philippi, died early Saturday, March 31, 2001, in the Broaddus Hospital following an extended illness.

She was born Jan. 12, 1909, in Belington, Barbour County, a daughter of the late Burton and Ida Mae Ware Everson.

Her husband, Olen Ray Westfall, whom she married March 17, 1926, preceded her in death on Dec. 31, 1995.

Surviving are three daughters, Geneva Mae Thorne, Belington, Rose Marie Champ, Buckhannon, and Georgia Mary Watkins, Berlin, Pa.; two sons, William Warren Dee Westfall, California, and James Thayer Westfall, Williamsport, Md.; 39 grandchildren, 68 great-grandchildren and 35 great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by five sons, Herman Ray Westfall, Hobert Roy Westfall, Burton Olen Westfall, Guy Allen Westfall and Jerry Meade Westfall; three daughters, Eulah Lee Westfall, Ida Belle Westfall and Marley Alice Westfall; two brothers, Elvin Everson and Herman Everson; and one sister, Rhoda Everson.

Mrs. Westfall was a homemaker. She was a former sorter for Goodwill Industries.

She attended the Weaver Church of the Nazarene.

Friends may call at the Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel, Belington, from 4-9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Tuesday, when funeral services will be conducted from the funeral chapel with the Rev. Doyle N. Rider officiating. Interment will follow in the Fraternal Cemetery.
