Doddridge opens play in state tourney

From Staff Reports

For the Doddridge County Bulldogs, it was all about timing.

Doddridge County finished the season on a

roll, winning 15 of its last 17 games. Most importantly, the streak included a runners-up finish in regional play to help the Bulldogs secure its first state volleyball tournament appearance since 1997.

Doddridge County (29-13) takes on Wayne tonight at 8 p.m. in first round action of the Class AA-A tournament.

The Bulldogs are led by seniors Miranda Ash and Judi Rose -- both members of the 1997 team which lost to Greenbrier West. Ash leads the team with 132 points, while Rose is a fearsome presence at the net with a team-leading 234 kills.

Doddridge County's furious rally toward the end of the season is a stark contrast to its near-disastrous beginning. Sixteen games into the season, the Bulldogs were 7-9, but the season turned around in the Doddridge Invitational, where the team began its roll by winning the 18-team tournament.

However, the Bulldogs didn't save all their dramatic comebacks for early in the season. Doddridge County had to advance out of the loser's bracket to claim the sectional title.

Sophomore Kate Clark has stepped up and played a big role in the Bulldogs' reversal, while Karen Kellar (jr.) leads the team with 987 assists. Heather Wyckoff complements Kellar, while Kim Hinzman (jr.) joins Ash in the back row. Freshman Kelly Lipscomb starts as the middle blocker.
