Obituaries for Friday, March 30, 2001

Florene Langford

GLENVILLE -- Florene Langford, 84, of state Route 89, Ashland, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Grant Hospital, Columbus, Ohio, after a short illness.

She was born April 30, 1916, in Glenville, a daughter of Okey and Odessia Campbell Horner.

Her husband, Stanley Langford, whom she married in 1933, preceded her in death in 1965.

Surviving are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Pat and Howard Harley, Roberta Dull, all of Ashland, Ohio, Mavis and Otha Collins, Wheeling; five sons and two daughters-in-law, Kenneth Langford, Ronnie and Joan Langford, all of Elyria, Ohio, Rick Langford, Mansfield, Ohio, Roger Langford, Glendale, Calif., Tim and Linda Langford, New London, Ohio; 19 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one brother, William Horner, Ashland, Ohio.

She was also preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.

Mrs. Langford had been a resident of Ashland for the past 40 plus years. She was a homemaker.

She had been a member of the Glenville Christian Chapel.

William E. Locke

FAIRMONT -- William E. "Bill" Locke, 80, of Katy community, Marion County, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital.

He was born April 18, 1920, in Marion County, a son of the late Benjamin and Amy Wiley Locke.

His wife, Sylvia M. Hickman Locke, preceded him in death on Aug. 26, 1994.

Surviving are two sons and their wives, Barry L. and Barbara Locke, Shinnston, and Robin L. and Nancy Locke, Jane Lew; three daughters and one son-in-law, Linda L. Locke, Katy, Nancy L. Zicafoose, Katy, and Karen L. and Travis Thorne, Gladwin, Mich.; one brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Virginia Locke, Rivesville; four grandchildren, Michael Zicafoose, Matthew Zicafoose, Bryan Thorne and Kaitlin Thorne; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Alvin Locke and Neal Locke; and one sister, Artola Dowdy.

Mr. Locke worked briefly at Owens-Illinois Glass Plant, Fairmont. He later worked as a machinist and toolmaker for Charles Phillips Tool Co., Mannington, for 14 years, then for Allegheny Ballistics Laboratory, Keyser, and most recently for Mundell Machine for nearly 10 years from where he retired.

He enjoyed following the West Virginia University football and basketball teams. He was Baptist by faith and an active member of the Katy Baptist Church, where he served as deacon. He also enjoyed gardening.

Delores Arlene Jones McElwee

PARSONS -- Delores Arlene McElwee, 57, a native of Tucker County and a resident of Ivor, Va., died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at the Chesapeake Health Care Center, Chesapeake, Va. She had been in declining health for the past month and death was attributed to heart failure.

She was born June 27, 1943, in Parsons, a daughter of the late Delton Jones and Sylvia Nestor Jones.

Her husband, Francis M. McElwee, whom she married Oct. 21, 1961, at Oakland, Md., survives.

Also surviving are one son, DeWayne McElwee, Windsor, Va.; one daughter, Ronda Chewning and husband, Eddie, Chesapeake, Va.; five sisters, Gertrude Bonner and Phyllis Sherritts, both of Akron, Ohio, Carol Breitzman, Annapolis, Md., Barbara Hart, Clarksburg, and Cindy Burns, Parsons; and one granddaughter, Jamie Chewning, Chesapeake.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth, Jones.

Mrs. McElwee was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1960. She was a former member of the Bretz Church of Christ, Bretz. She was a homemaker.

Wilbert 'Wib' Mayle

GRAFTON -- Wilbert "Wib" Mayle, 78, of Route 1, Shumaker Ridge, Thornton, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.

He was born March 16, 1923, in Taylor County, a son of the late Jefferson Davis Mayle and Lucy Jane Croston Mayle.

His wife, Lillian Parsons Mayle, preceded him in death in August 1977.

Surviving are 11 children, Judy White and husband, Terry, Lawrenceville, Ga., Durley Mayle and Zendell Mayle, both at home, Elda Harold and husband, Roger, Hot Springs, Va., Delford Mayle and wife, Viola Sue, Julia Mayle, Dennis Mayle, Eleby Taylor and Jefferson Davis Mayle, fraternal twins, Emma Taylor and husband, Tani, all of Canton, Ohio, and Erma Mayle and husband, Dennis, Grafton; 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Cox, Columbus, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by eight brothers, Sherman, Uley, Richard, Melvin, Oney, Laco, Herbert and one brother in infancy; and one grandson, Timmy Mayle.

Mr. Mayle was retired in 1986 from the B&O Railroad. He was a trackman with over 39 years service.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association and a Methodist by faith. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Andrew B. Nestor Jr.

FLEMINGTON -- Andrew B. Nestor Jr., 82, of Long Beach, Calif., formerly of Flemington, Taylor County, passed away Friday, March 2, 2001, in Long Beach, Calif.

He was born April 8, 1918, in Flemington, a son of the late Andrew Baxter and Florence Nestor.

His wife, Jean Nestor, survives.

Also surviving are one sister-in-law, Betty and one cousin, Virginia Nestor, Grafton.

Mr. Nestor served in the Army Air Corps at Chanute Field, Ill., and served in England during World War II for five years.

He was associated with the Flemington United Methodist Church and the Flemington Senior Citizens. He donated to the Flemington Veterans Memorial Park and the Flemington Jail. He attended Flemington High School and Grafton High School.

Funeral services were conducted in Long Beach, Calif.

Rosa Margurite Queen

GRANTSVILLE -- Rosa Margurite Queen, 83, of Sand Fork, Gilmer County, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, Weston.

She was born in Gilmer County, a daughter of the late Asa and Chloe Ellyson Jones.

Her husband, Virgil Jones, preceded her in death.

Surviving are three daughters, Sharon Eakle, Fairmont, Jacqueline Justus, Cox's Mills and Dorothy Hamrick, Glenville; one brother, Jewell Jones, Cox's Mills; three sisters, Mary Brandon and Marthat Osborn, both of Cox's Mills and Ruth McHenry, Burnt House; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers.

Mrs. Queen was a member of the Sand Fork Baptist Church. She was a homemaker.

Thomas Linn Stalnaker

FAIRMONT -- Thomas Linn Stalnaker, 57, of Pleasant Valley community, Fairmont, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

He was born Feb. 24, 1944, in Weston, a son of the late Frank W. and Cotha Frame Stalnaker.

His wife, Jane Martin Stalnaker, survives in Fairmont.

Also surviving are two sons, Matthew Stalnaker and Mark Linn Stalnaker, both of Fairmont; one sister, Sheila Anne Wilson, Linn; and two aunts, Edna Frame Fitzpatrick, Belmont, and Nellie Stalnaker Pierce, New Castle, Ind.

Mr. Stalnaker was employed by State Farm Insurance Co. as a claim specialist with 31 years of service. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman.

J. Harvey Tucker

BRIDGEPORT -- J. Harvey Tucker of Sun City West, Ariz., died Monday, March 5, 2001, after a short illness.

He was born Jan. 20, 1918, the fifth child of the late James Waitman and Helen M. Tucker. The family resided at Route 50.

His wife, Ruth Ford, whom he married Sept. 15, 1944, survives.

Also surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, James Jeffrey and Jo Wendy Tucker, Fairfield, Colo.; and one sister, Helen E. McKee, Bridgeport.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, M. Jennings and Mason E. Tucker; and two sisters, Beatrice V. Shroyer and S. Bernice Lathram.

Mr. Tucker graduated from Grafton High School and West Virginia Business College. He started work in 1938 for Lowndes Bank and remained with the bank for 45 years, retiring in 1983 at which time he moved to Arizona.

He served in World War II as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was active in the Lions Club and other organizations. He was a Protestant by faith.

Avis M. Wanamaker

FAIRMONT -- Avis M. Wanamaker, 88, of Fleming Avenue, Fairmont, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital.

She was born Aug. 7, 1912, in Barbour County, the youngest daughter of the late Aldine and Estella Marsh Stemple.

Her husband, William Paul Wanamaker, preceded her in death in 1957.

Surviving are one son, James Edward and Janet Wanamaker, Huntington Beach, Calif.; three grandchildren, James Jr. Wanamaker, Lorena and Ian MacDonald, all of California, and Nathan and Heather Wanamaker, Aiken, S.C.; two great-granddaughters, Lillie Avis MacDonald and Dorothy Corinne MacDonald, Huntington Beach; and one sister, Mrs. Clarence (Mildred) Ball, Philippi.

Mrs. Wanamaker was a 1929 graduate of Philippi High School and a 1933 graduate of Fairmont State College. She retired in 1985 from Fairmont General Hospital as the switchboard operator.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Fairmont. She also belonged to the American Cancer Society, the Women's Club of Fairmont and the Volunteer Fire Department of Fairmont General Hospital.
