Hawks, Irish, Lewis County victorious
GRAFTON -- Behind the arm of Drew Toth and the bats of several, South Harrison defeated Grafton, 8-2, Tuesday in Big 10 baseball action.
Toth pitched four innings of four-hit ball to pick up the victory and added two doubles at the plate. Jerred Novotny and Tommy Cohen also picked up two hits for the Hawks (2-0).
Grafton (1-2) scored both its runs in the seventh.
n NOTRE DAME 11, Braxton County 9: Mark Jones, Kenny Beerbower and Billy Swiger each picked up three hits to lead the Irish.
Beerbower, who started the game for Notre Dame, helped his own cause with a homer.
The Irish fell behind 7-4 after three but scored at least one run, including three in the fourth, in every inning the rest of the way.
T.J. Wright earned the victory in relief.
n LEWIS COUNTY 5, Lincoln 2: The Cougars scored twice in the seventh and only collected three hits on the day.
n ROBERT C. BYRD 7, Philip Barbour 2: A four-run second and the arm of Casey Freeman paced the Eagles to victory.
Amanda Mazzie had two hits, Missy Arnett contributed three and Kendie Davis added four.
n RCB 7, Notre Dame 0: Michael Walker, Brian Jarvis, Chris Shreves and Stephen Howard all won in both singles and doubles for the Eagles.
Luke Southerlan and Mike Curia also were victorious for RCB.
n RCB 5, Notre Dame 2: Olivia Hill and Sarah Denny notched singles and doubles victories for the Eagles. RCB also received victories from Annalise Llanesa and Ashley Wagner. Jade Vita and Tiffany Taylor won for the Irish.
n ALDERSON-BROADDUS 3-1, Fairmont State 2-2: A-B took the first game of a doubleheader with two-hit games from Adam McDaniel, Ben Garver and Mark Salfia. Dave Mollohan earned the victory.
It was another one-run affair in the second game, with the Falcons nipping the Battlers. Jake France and Lee Pennington each picked up a pair of hits for A-B.
n DAVIS & ELKINS 8-10, West Virginia Tech 0-3: D&E swept a pair from Tech.
In the first game, Lucas Taylor hit a triple, and Tom Close went 2-for-3 with a double to lead D&E.
George Wagner notched the victory.
Five had at least two hits for D&E in Game 2, as the Senators banged out 16 total. Zach Swisher led the way, going 4-for-4 with 4 RBI. Randy Littlecott went 3-3 with 3 RBI, and Shawn Cullen, Taylor and Dave Wolfers also had two hits. Travis Digrittollo earned the victory.
