Obituaries for Sunday, July 2, 2000

Vendel L. Gombarcik

STEUBENVILLE -- Vendel L. Gombarcik, 83, of Mingo Junction, Ohio, formerly of Clarksburg, died Friday, June 30, 2000, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.

He was born March 15, 1917, in Clarksburg, a son of the late Vendel and Elizabeth Karlok Gombarcik.

His wife, Anna Cortez Gombarcik, preceded him in death in 1998.

Surviving are one son, Dale Gombarcik, Clarksburg; three daughters, Arlene Sweeda and husband, Thomas, Mingo Junction, Carol Oxley, Steubenville, and Margorie Grigsby and husband, Carl Jr., Mingo Junction; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, John and Charles; and three sisters, Mary McKinney, Emma Ash and Anna Gombarcik.

Calling hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at the Mosti Funeral Home, 321 South Fourth St., Steubenville, Ohio. A funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Fort Steuben Burial Estates, Wintersville, Ohio.

Angeline Granett

CLARKSBURG -- Angeline Granett, 88, of 2227 Pride Ave., Clarksburg, died Saturday morning, July 1, 2000, at a personal care home at 320 Sycamore St., Clarksburg.

She was born Sept. 29, 1911, in Harrison County, a daughter of the late Peter Stumpo and Catherine Congi Stumpo and stepfather, Patsy Costa.

Her husband, William B. Granett, preceded her in death.

Surviving are one son, Sam Granett, Austin, Texas; one daughter, Mrs. William (Bebe) Gonsorcik and Sondra Colombo, both of Clarksburg; one brother, Angelo Costa, Philadelphia, Pa.; three sisters, Lucy Alvarez, Clarksburg, Mary Jack, California, and Rose Meatris, Steubenville, Ohio; and six grandchildren, Angela, Jennifer and Vicky Gonsorcik, Amy Colombo, Mrs. Rudy (Sondra) Colombo, Beverly Colombo and Spencer Granett.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, John Stumpo, Wellsburg, and Carmen Stumpo, Clarksburg; and one sister, Rose Ferrise, Steubenville, Ohio.

Mrs. Granett was a homemaker. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, The Clarksburg Women's Club, The Altar Rosary Society and, St. James Catholic Church and choir.

Friends may call at the Bartolo Funeral Home, 515 West Pike St., Clarksburg, from 7-9 p.m. Monday and from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at St. James Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Wednesday with Father Robert A. Perriello as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Holy Cross Cemetery. A scriptural wake service will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home chapel.

Wendell Hayward Gregory

CLARKSBURG -- Wendell Hayward Gregory, 46, of 4130 West Royal Palm Rd., Phoenix, Ariz., died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 21, 1954, in Webster Springs, a son of Erma Gregory of 916 West Pike St., Clarksburg.

Also surviving are two brothers, James "Jim" Gregory, Cockeysville, Md., and Randy Gregory, Oceano, Calif.; two sisters, Noreen Kirtner and Vera Edgell, both of Clarksburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Gregory was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a QAQC manager for Futureweld Co., Inc.

Friends will be received at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St., Clarksburg, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday. There will be no visitation Tuesday. A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. David L. Hulme conducting. Interment will be in West Virginia National Cemetery, Pruntytown.

Kenneth E. Hiley

PENNSBORO -- Kenneth E. Hiley, 69, of Pennsboro, died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 19, 1930, at White Pine in Calhoun County, a son of the late Homer R. and Alta Walton Hiley.

Surviving are two daughters, Cheryl Snyder, Austin, Texas, and Beverly Merali, Dallas, Texas; one son, Stephen Hiley, Pennsboro; three sisters, Gladys Griffith, Ellenboro, Thelma Parks and Margie Barnes, both of Pennsboro; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Alice McKinney.

Mr. Hiley had worked for both the B&O and the C&O railroads. He retired with 25 years of service as a tunnel mechanic and was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Monday at the McCullough-Rogers Funeral Home, Pennsboro. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Steve Raines officiating. Burial will be in the Piggott-Hiley Cemetery on Arnolds Creek in Doddridge County.

Robert Lee Lewis

PARSONS -- Robert Lee Lewis, 61, of 17 Old City Park, Parsons, died at 3:45 a.m. Saturday, July 1, 2000, at Davis Memorial Hospital. Death was attributed to heart failure.

He was born Sept. 24, 1938, at Parsons, a son of the late Roy and Emma Chaney Lewis.

He was twice married. His first wife, the former Carol Lowther, survives at Florida. His second wife, the former Carol Phillips, whom he married Sept. 18, 1976 at Rockville, Md., survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Kimberly Young, Mechanicsville, Md.; two stepdaughters, Vanessa Troutman, Baltimore, Md., Kimberly Kittle, Silver Spring, Md.; three stepsons, Robert Roy, Narvone, Pa., Eugene Roy, Greenville, Tenn., and Malcolm Roy, Thomas; two brothers, Allen Lewis, Montrose, Mike Lewis, Martinsburg; three grandchildren, 10 stepgrandchildren and one stepgreat-grandson.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Carole Lester.

Mr. Lewis was a graduate of Parsons High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a 30-year employee of the former Heidi Bakery at Silver Spring, Md.

Friends will be received at the Barb and Greenlief Funeral Home, Parsons, from 6-9 p.m. Monday. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Pastor Allen D. Crosten officiating. Interment will follow at the Parsons City Cemetery, Parsons.

Virginia Mae Proctor

CLARKSBURG -- Mrs. Virginia Mae Proctor, 75, of Route 1, Box 430, Mount Clare, died at 8:49 p.m. Thursday, June 29, 2000, at the United Hospital Center in Clarksburg, following an extended illness.

She was born Aug. 5, 1924, in Durham, N.C., a daughter of the late Charles and Jessie Williams Vowell.

Her husband, Curtis L. Proctor, whom she married Aug. 4, 1943, preceded her in death Jan. 6, 1995.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Lamont L. and Kim Proctor, Mt. Clare; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Barbara J. and Harold King, Durham, and Mrs. Virginia A. and Benny Pipkin, Butner, N.C.; two brothers, Donnie and Hal Vowell, both of New Orleans, La.; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Mickey W. Proctor; and one infant son, Curtis L. Proctor Jr.

Mrs. Proctor was a Baptist by faith. She was a homemaker.

There is no visitation or services to be held in Clarksburg. Friends will be received at the Hudson Funeral Home, 211 South Miami Blvd., Durham, from 7-9 p.m. today. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Durham. Arrangements by the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home in Clarksburg.

Mary Catherine Bramer Quirk

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Mary Catherine Bramer Quirk, 73, of Scottsdale, died Monday, June 19, 2000.

She was born May 18, 1927, in Sardis, W.Va., a daughter of the late Benjamin Shirl Bramer and Mary Virginia Ash and stepfather, Orval Willis "Bud" Ash.

Surviving are one daughter, Stephanie Hecht, Scottsdale; Stephanie's father, James L. Pearcy, Salem, W.Va.; two grandchildren, Alex Semenik and Erin Hecht, Scottsdale; one sister, Virginia Gola, Reynoldsville; and 19 nieces and nephews, including Cheryl Baker and family of Clarksburg, James, Robert, and Daniel Heaton and their families of the Canton, Ohio, area, and Steven Gola, Scottsdale, Ariz.

She was also preceded in death by her second husband, Nathan Goff and by her third husband, Edward L. Quirk; and one sister, Rose Marie Heaton.

Mrs. Quirk moved to Arizona in 1965. She was a retired politician, realtor and homemaker.

Mrs. Quirk will rest next to her late husband, Edward L. Quirk in the Memorial Garden at Christ Church of the Ascension in Paradise Valley, Ariz.

William Marvin 'Ernie' Rinehart Jr.

CLARKSBURG -- Mr. William Marvin "Ernie" Rinehart Jr., 39, of P.O. Box 225, Mount Clare, died at 4:41 a.m. Saturday, July 1, 2000, as a result of an automobile accident.

He was born Aug. 15, 1960, in Clarksburg, a son of William M. Rinehart Sr., and Rosalie Messineo Rinehart of Mount Clare.

Also surviving are one sister and brother-in-law, Mrs. Donna Rinehart Crawford and Robert Crawford, Stonewood; one half brother, Nicholas W. Rinehart, Mount Clare; and several aunts and uncles.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Deborah K. Rinehart Williams in 1979.

Mr. Rinehart was a Protestant by faith. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He had been employed as a pipe layer by United Welding Company.

Friends may call at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St., Clarksburg, from 3-8 p.m. today, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday with the Rev. Rodney Heckert presiding. Interment will follow in the Lost Creek Seventh Day Baptist Church Cemetery.

E. Jean Ball-Smith

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- E. Jean Ball-Smith, 76, of 2250 Burbank Ave., died Friday morning, June 30, 2000, at home.

She was born Feb. 5, 1924, in Clarksburg, a daughter of Willie B. and Della M. Keller Matheny.

Surviving are two sons, Gordon A. Coyier Jr. with whom she made her home and Curtis L. Ball, Clarksburg; one brother, Denzil L. Matheny, Austintown, Ohio; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene E. and William B. Matheny; one sister, Florida Matheny; and one grandson.

Mrs. Ball-Smith was a packer fro Brockway Glass and Anchor Hocking Corp., both in West Virginia, for 38 years, retiring in 1985. She was also a riveter for the Glenn L. Martin Co. in Baltimore, Md., during World War II.

She attended the Freewill Baptist Church in Austintown, and was a 1949 graduate of Roosevelt Wilson High School in Clarksburg.

Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. today at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown, and at 12:30 p.m. Monday. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Monday.
