Ravenswood tops Doddridge

by Randall Jett

CORRESPONDENT

WEST UNION -- Ravenswood, behind some outstanding 3-point shooting, downed Doddridge County 62-50 in both teams' season opener Wednesday night.

The Red Devils were led by Brett Rector, who scored 20 points on five 3-pointers. R.J. Balis followed with 15 points, including three treys, and Ty Pistelli chipped in 10.

With the Bulldogs up 31-24 at halftime, the Red Devils went on a 23-6 run in the third quarter and that put them up 47-37. Rector led the way with nine points on three 3-pointers, while Basil had eight points and Pistelli had six.

"We let them get back into the game, but we perservered" Ravenswood coach Mick Price said. "We should have been able to do (the third quarter run) earlier in the game, but we never got wound up.

"I thought Doddridge outhustled us and beat us on the boards."

With Ravenswood up 10 points, Doddridge got back into the game at the 4:19 mark, 51-47 on Josh Sheets' two free throws. Then Rector and the Red Devil offense took over.

Rector had seven points down the stretch to put the victory away.

The Bulldogs were led by Dustin Smith with 12 points, while Brad Wilt had 11 points and Sheets added 10 points.

"I was pleased with our first half play," Doddridge County coach Dan McConnell said. "The start of the third quarter, they started double teaming and we started losing our composure and not getting the ball down the court and into our offense.

"After losing all five starters from last year, to do this well against a team like Ravenswood, I thought our guys did a great job."

n B-U 55, University 51: Chris Carson fired in 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lift Buckhannon-Upshur past University in NCAC prep basketball action in Tennerton.

Jeremy Davis added 13 points and eight rebounds while Ryan Coury and Jimmy Egress added 10 points apiece.

Ben Bradley and Jay Forsythe scored 14 points each to lead the Hawks.

The Bucs outrebounded UHS 44-34, with Egress adding 10.
