Delbert Arbogast
ELKINS -- Delbert Arbogast, 82, a resident of Route
1, 4-H Camp Road, Beverly, died at 6:44 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, at
his home. He had been in declining health for the past six months.
He was born April 30, 1916, in Cherry Grove, the
eldest son of the late Don and Icie Teter Arbogast.
On Oct. 8, 1942, at Sully, Md., he married the former Pearl George,
who preceded him in death on July 31, 1986.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Sharon)
Martin, Beverly; five brothers, Guy Arbogast, Elkins, Coy Arbogast, Wooster,
Ohio, Carl Arbogast, Alliance, Ohio, and Earl Arbogast and Dremis Arbogast,
both of Cherry Grove; three sisters, Betty Jean Pennington and Rosa Lee
Campbell, both of Elkins, and Cynthia Hackett, Hagerstown, Md.; three grandchildren,
Richard Simmons, Mill Creek, Renea McDaniel, Beverly, and Shelly Hall,
Belington; five great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one son, Ronald "Butch¨ Arbogast;
one brother, Hoy Arbogast; and two sisters, Elva Wamsley and Bonnie Smith.
Mr. Arbogast was a graduate of Circleville High
School and Shepherd College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and had
worked as an electrician for the Western Maryland Railroad for several
years, retiring in 1984.
He was the treasurer/manager of the Western Maryland
Credit Union for 37 years and was a farmer at Beverly for 53 years. He
was a member of the Randolph County Recreation Board and was instrumental
in making many improvements at Camp Pioneer 4-H Camp. He was Methodist.
Ora E. Armstrong
BUCKHANNON -- Ora Elizabeth "Betty¨ Armstrong,
84, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, at Wesley Ridge
Residential Care Facility. She was born March 27, 1914, in Mason County,
a daughter of the late Joseph Kimberling and Emma Kimberling. Her husband
of 62 years, William Robert Armstrong, preceded her in death on Jan. 22,
1999.
Surviving are two daughters, Peggy Armstrong, Hawaii, and Jo Ann Cole,
Pickerington, Ohio; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Armstrong was a member of the Lake County Retired
Teacher's Association and the Music and Drama Club. She graduated from
Bowling Green Business University (now part of Western Kentucky University)
in 1934.
She was a member of the Painesville United Methodist Church and was
a retired business education teacher serving 30 years.
William R. Armstrong
BUCKHANNON -- William Robert Armstrong, 83, of Reynoldsburg,
Ohio, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, in Mount Carmel East Hospital. He was
born Feb. 12, 1915, in Braxton County, a son of the late A.L. Armstrong
and Garnet Armstrong.
His wife of 62 years, Ora Elizabeth Kimberling Armstrong, preceded
him in death on Feb. 12, 1999.
Surviving are two daughters, Peggy Armstrong, Hawaii, and Jo Ann Cole,
Pickerington, Ohio; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and
one sister, Rosalie Stanford, Tennessee.
Mr. Armstrong was a longtime member of Toastmasters
International, a member of the Painesville United Methodist Church, and
a charter member of the Diamond Toastmasters Club, serving the organization
as district 10 governor in the Cleveland area.
He was a graduate of West Virginia University. He
was a chemical engineer for Diamond Alkali Co. for 26 years, then engaged
in consulting and private business until retiring in 1995.
Lucille B. Cayton
WESTON -- Lucille B. Cayton, 88, of Simpson's Run,
died at 5:25 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, at her home.
She was born Nov. 22, 1910, in Big Run, a daughter of the late James
''Ob'' Wilson and Dora Weaver Wilson.
Her husband of 69 years, Granville A. Cayton, whom she married Dec.
24, 1929, at Big Run, survives.
Also surviving are five sons and daughters-in-law, James and Sandy
Cayton, and William and Dee Cayton, all of Walkersville, Thorn and Donna
Cayton, Simpson's Run, and Claude and Kathy Cayton, and Charles and Karen
Cayton, all of Mineral Wells; four daughters, Evelyn Moneypenny, Norma
Cowley and Mattie Rogers, all of Simpson's Run, and Mrs. Dick (Helen) Carder,
Mineral Wells; one sister, Ella Austin, Salem, Sunrise Nursing Home; 20
grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by one daughter,
Virginia Myers; three sons-in-law, Kenney Moneypenney, Thomas Cowley and
Lanty Myers; and two sisters, Thelma and Lena.
Mrs. Cayton was Methodist. She was a homemaker and
enjoyed gardening.
Friends may call at Boyle Funeral Home, 322 Main Ave., Weston, from
2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday
from the Boyle Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Clifford West and the
Rev. Russell Furr officiating. Interment will follow in the Long Point
Cemetery in Walkersville.
Noca B. Christy
Noca Bailey Christy, 92, of Clarksburg, formerly of 444 West Main St.,
died at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, in United Hospital Center. She
was born March 23, 1906, in Salem, a daughter of the late Carl Bailey and
Mary Cunningham Bailey.
Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Floyd (Carlene) Seders, Leavittsburg,
Ohio; two nieces, Joan M. Dils, Gans, Pa., and Tina Seders, Warren, Ohio;
and one nephew, David G. Bland, West Union.
She was also preceded in death by her first husband,
Russell Melton; and one sister, Mrs. A.W. (Dortha Helen) Bland.
Mrs. Christy was a member of Clarksburg Baptist Church. She was educated
in the public schools of Harrison County, Salem College, Salem, Marshall
University, Huntington, and Wayne State University, Michigan. She was a
retired teacher, having taught 42 years in Kanawha County schools and in
Detroit, Mich.
Friends will be received at Davis-Weaver Funeral
Home, 329 E. Main St., Clarksburg, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today. The funeral
service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the
Rev. Kurt Busiek conducting the service. Interment will follow in the White
Cemetery, Elkview. The Clarksburg Chapter of the WCTU will conduct a service
in the funeral home at 7 p.m. today.
Carl R. Deem
MANNINGTON -- Carl Ray Deem, 72, of Jericho
Addition, formerly of Akron, Ohio, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, at his residence.
He was born April 23, 1926, in Harrison County, a son of the late Henry
Benton and Nellie Boggess Deem.
His wife of 52 years, Maxine Sycks Deem, survives.
Also surviving are two brothers, Ralph and his wife,
Virginia Deem, Pine Bluff, and Henry Deem, Atwater, Ohio; two sisters and
spouses, Betty and the Rev. Henry Matheny and Dorothy and "Toots¨ Lockhart,
all of Enterprise; a special friend, Ronnie Buck, Akron; several nieces
and nephews. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Benton Roscoe
Deem, George Isaac Deem and Harvey M. Deem; and one sister, Blanche Deem.
Mr. Deem was a lifetime member of the American Legion
Post No. 209 in Akron and had worked at the McNeil Machine Shop in Akron
for 34 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Korean
War.
Helen Y. Fitzwater
BELINGTON -- Helen Y. "Bonnie¨ Fitzwater, 69,
of Route 1, Wellington Heights, Philippi, died at 10:20 a.m. Monday, Feb.
15, 1999, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg, following an extended
illness.
She was born Nov. 14, 1929, in Junior, a daughter of the late Delbert
and Ethel Hammer Hymes.
On April 25, 1947, she married Harold W. Fitzwater, who survives.
Also surviving are one son, Randall E. Fitzwater,
Akron, Ohio; three daughters, Mrs. Chuck (Vicki) Reed, Belington, Mrs.
Gail (Beverly) Hardy, Clarksburg, and Mrs. Doug (Katrina) Meadows, St.
Leonard, Md.; one sister, Beverly "Hope¨ Mitchell, Manteo, N.C.; one
brother, Charles Hymes, Nags Head, N.C.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, George Hymes.
Mrs. Fitzwater retired from Alderson-Broaddus College,
where she worked as a secretary in the Financial Aid Office. She was a
member of the Secretary's Club at A-B College, the Ladies Auxiliary of
Laurel Mountain Post No. 410, Veterans of Foreign Wars at Belington and
the Calvary United Methodist Church at Junior.
Dora G. Hayzlett
WEIRTON -- Dora Gay Baughman Hayzlett, 74, of Weirton,
died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at Weirton Medical Center.
She was born March 12, 1924, in Doddridge County, a daughter of the
late John Samuel Ford and Gay L. Conwell Ford.
Surviving are one son, Ernie Baughman, Salem; one daughter, Mrs. Russell
(Alexis) Fox, Weirton; two brothers, John Ford, Cadiz, Ohio, and Ora Ford,
Lewisburg; two sisters, Sylvia Fleming, Salem, and Anna Huff, Clarksburg;
five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was also preceded
in death by three brothers, James Ford, Ross Ford and Russell Ford; and
two sisters, Zella Williams and Zelma Davis.
Ms. Hayzlett was a retired hostess at Stonewall
Jackson Hotel, Clarksburg, with 20 years of service.
Herbert Holmes
Herbert Holmes, 70, of Route 2, Clarksburg, died
Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, at United Hospital Center following a brief illness.
He was born Oct. 19, 1928, in Erbacon, Webster County, a son of the late
John and Sarah Justice Holmes.
Surviving are one daughter, Debbie Holmes, Charleston; two sisters,
Edna Smit, Maine, and Edith Riddle, Ohio; one brother, George Holmes,Tornado;
two grandchildren, eight nieces and nephews and 13 great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Mr. Holmes was a member of the Meuse-Argonne Post
No. 573, Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a life member of the Disabled
American Veterans. He was Protestant and retired from the B&O Railroad
as a conductor.
Friends may call at Davis Funeral Home, 443 W. Pike St., from 7-9 p.m.
today. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral
home. Interment will be in the West Virginia National Cemetery.
Joanne F. Katz
Joanne Fratt Katz of Florissant, Mo., formerly of
Michigan and Dawmont, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999.
She was born May 20, 1945, in Gainesville, Texas, a daughter of Anthony
and Edith Fratt.
Her husband, Herbert Katz, survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Robert and Richard,
both of Michigan; one daughter, Robin, Festus, Mo.; six grandchildren;
two sisters, Susan Ormsley and Judith Haden; and three brothers, Anthony
Fratt Jr., Frank and John, all of Michigan.
George H. McCartney
BUCKHANNON -- George Henry McCartney, 67, of 308
Buckhannon Manor, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at St. Joseph's Hospital.
He was born April 5, 1931, in Pickens, a son of Clarinda Bachmann McCartney,
Buckhannon, and the late Bennett McCartney.
Surviving are five daughters, Leona Groves, Heaston
Ridge, Norine Cindy Rogers, Whales, England, Darlene Kay Riffle, Bush Run,
Tracy Scott, Buckhannon, and Kerry Taylor, London, England; one son, Kevin
McCartney, Merseyside, England; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren;
two sisters, Mae Collins and Rebecca Jediny, both of Buckhannon; one brother,
William Edward McCartney, Louisville, Ky.; and one aunt, Mary Koon, Warren,
Ohio.
He was also preceded in death by one son, William
Gerrad McCartney; one brother, Issac McCartney; and one sister, Luvadia
McCartney Hickman. Mr. McCartney worked in cable manufacturing and served
in the U.S. Air Force during Korea.
Donald W. Morris
GRANTSVILLE -- Donald Wilson Morris, died Saturday,
Feb. 13, 1999, at his residence in Grantsville following an extended illness.
He was born Feb. 9, 1916, in Calhoun County, a son of the late L.J. and
Edith Marshall Morris.
His wife, June Burke Morris, whom he married on July 7, 1945, preceded
him in death on Sept. 3, 1998.
Surviving are one son, Richard J. Morris and wife, Jennifer, and one
daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Jane) Carpenter, all of Grantsville; one daughter,
Mrs. Stephen (Donna) Maxwell, Clarksburg; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild;
and one brother, Carl R. Morris, Grantsville. He was also preceded in death
by one sister, Bernice Stamp.
Mr. Morris graduated from Calhoun County High School, was active in
4-H and received the 4-H All-Star award. He also graduated from the West
Virginia University School of Mining Engineering in June 1939 and was a
registered oil and gas engineer.
He served during World War II, being discharged
with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Colonel Morris was a C-47 pilot in
a group that led the glider invasion of France on D-Day. He participated
in five major campaigns, including the Battle of the Bulge, Bastogne and
the crossing of the Rhine.
He was commanding officer of the 71 Troop Carrying
Squadron and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal
with two Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Presidential Unit Citation for the
invasion of Normandy.
Mr. Morris owned and operated Morris Oil and Gas Co. in Grantsville
for 45 years. During that time he also served as president and general
manager of the Calhoun Super Service, a franchised Ford dealership for
36 years. He was a former president of the Calhoun County Bank and owned
and operated two beef farms.
His community involvement included serving a term
on the Calhoun County Commission. He helped to establish the Calhoun General
Hospital, now the Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center, was chairman of the
building committee for the new sanctuary at the First Baptist Church in
1962, and was part of a committee that approached Congress to support the
building of the Burnsville Dam for flood control on the Little Kanawha
River.
Elaine Pietrowski
MORGANTOWN -- Elaine Pietrowski, 51, of Estate
Drive, formerly of Clarksburg and Fairmont, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999,
at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.
She was born Jan. 17, 1948, in Clarksburg, a daughter of Josephine
Bohensky Herman, Fairmont and Clarksburg and the late George Edward Herman.
Her husband, Edward Pietrowski, survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Luke Pietrowski and Jon Pietrowski, both
of Morgantown; two sisters, Mrs. Jan "Dolores¨ Furraitti, Barberton,
Ohio, and Gloria Masters, Akron, Ohio.
Mrs. Pietrowski was an educator and a music teacher.
She taught at North Elementary School and was a traveling music teacher
in the Monongalia County schools. She was a graduate of Fairmont Senior
High School, earned her bachelor's of arts degree from Fairmont State College
and a master's degree at West Virginia University.
She was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority,
MENC Organization, and Monongalia County Teacher's Association. She was
also a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Morgantown and was a former
member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Clarksburg.
Mrs. Pietrowski began her singing career as a 5
year old at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Clarksburg. She sang on tour
at Notre Dame Cathedral in France, and was a vocalist with the Dave McClure
Band and The Occassionals. She performed in musical productions at Fairmont
State College and sang with her sisters as a trio on several occasions.
She also sang at many church choirs and weddings
at various churches, including St. Mary's Catholic Church of Morgantown
and the Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Clarksburg.
Goldie M. Robinson
SHINNSTON -- Goldie M. Carson Robinson, 98, of Wallace,
died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999.
She was born Jan. 31, 1901, in Rinehart, a daughter of the late W.E.
and Celia King Carson.
Her husband, Halley Newton Robinson, preceded her in death on April
12, 1942.
Surviving are one son, Dr. William T. Robinson, Woodland, Calif.; one
sister, Ruth Wetzel, Arnold, Pa.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, Okey Carson.
Mrs. Robinson was a member of the Wallace United
Methodist Church and a member and former president of the United Methodist
Women. She was also a member of the Wallace Senior Citizens and was Senior
Citizen of the Year in 1968.
She was also involved in the Extension Homemakers Club and the Fire
Department Auxiliary, both of Wallace, and the YWCA and Eastern Star, Clarksburg.
Friends may call at Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston,
from 2-9 p.m. Wednesday. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Lions Club Cemetery,
Wallace.
Bertha M. Self
FLATWOODS -- Bertha M. Self, 89, of Exchange, died
Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, in West Virginia University Medical Center, Morgantown,
following a brief illness.
She was born June 12, 1909, in Bonnie, a daughter of the late Uriah
Newton Singleton and Lillie Virginia Ratliff Singleton.Her husband, Arley
Byrne Self, preceded her in death on Nov. 8, 1991.
Surviving are one daughter, Sue Loyd, Exchange; one son, Junior Self,
Flatwoods; three sisters, Dae Luzader, Newville, Minnie "Dick¨ Singleton,
Exchange, and Elva Smyth, Conroe, Texas; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren
and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one daughter,
Mamie VanHorn; four sisters, Patsy Singleton, Lea Hacker, Lina Hacker and
Mamie Ward; one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.
Mrs. Self was a homemaker and a member of the Pleasant Hill United
Methodist Church.
Harold J. Shahan
BETHESDA, Md. -- Harold Jennings Shahan of Bethesda,
formerly of Clarksburg, W.Va. and Salem, W.Va., died Saturday, Jan. 23,
1999, at his home.His wife of 63 years, Anna P. Shahan, whom he married
in June of 1935, survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Michael, Glenside, Pa., and John, Cary,
N.C.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Shahan was a retired General Accounting Office chief. He was a
native of West Virginia and had lived in Bethesda for 60 years.
In 1934 he received a bachelor of arts degree with
a music major from Salem College. Upon graduation, he moved to Washington,
D.C. and was employed by the Smokeless Coal Code Authority. That same year
he entered the U.S. Civil Service as an assembly clerk in the General Accounting
Office.
In 1944 he was called to military service in the
Army. For two years he served in the European Theater, including the Battle
of the Bulge. After the war in 1946, he returned to the GAO as an auditor
of War Contracts. He soon transferred to the position of claims examiner
in the Claims Division.
After 42 years of service, he retired in 1977, having
served as chief of the Payment Claims Branch for the last six years of
his tenure. He was a member of GAO Post 48 of The American Legion.
He sang for 25 years at the Bethesda Presbyterian Church in the church
choir.
For over 30 years the Shahans opened their home
to students, both foreign and American, providing an extended family for
them.
Oran L. Singleton
FARMINGTON -- Oran L. "Bud¨ Singleton, 71, of
South Farmington, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at Fairmont General Hospital.
He was born Sept. 5, 1927, in Weston, a son of the late Ralph and Eva Messenger
Singleton.
His wife of more than 47 years, Geneva Dean Singleton, survives.
Also surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law,
Barbara and Shawn Rinehart, Plum Run, near Mannington, and Karen and Richard
Waddell, Farmington; one son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Rebecca Singleton,
Farmington; five brothers, Fredric Donald Singleton, David Lee Singleton,
Arthur Linn Singleton, Charles William Singleton and Richard Curtiss Singleton;
one sister, Agnes Mae Wilfong, Mechanicsburg, Pa.; a special aunt, Agnes
Twyman, Criss Manor, Weston; 10 grandchildren, Richard and Erin Waddell
Jr., Rodney and Rhonda Messenger, Chad and Tammy Valentine, Justin Waddell,
Miranda Vance, Shawna Rinehart, and Eric Waddell and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Singleton was a member of the West Farmington
United Methodist Church, a past member of the International Order of Odd
Fellows Lodge and the Lions Club, both of Farmington, and the Veterans
of Foreign Wars of Mannington and Weston.
He had 12 years of schooling in the Jane Lew school
system and had served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He had
retired from the Equitable Gas Co. in Clarksburg in 1990 with 33 years
of service.
Bobby W. Swiger
Bobby Wayne Swiger, 51, of Second Avenue, Parkersburg,
died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, in Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg,
following an extended illness.
He was born May 7, 1947, in Harrison County, a son of Gladys America
Swiger, Reynoldsville, and the late Alfred B. Swiger.
His wife, Ethel Mae Bunnell Swiger, whom he married
May 18, 1971, survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mary Ann Swiger, at home, and Misty
Shamblin, Parkersburg; one stepson, Kenneth Bunnell, Parkersburg; five
grandchildren; three brothers, Alfred Lee Swiger, Bristol, Charles Swiger,
Reynoldsville, and Lonnie Swiger, Jupiter, Fla.; two sisters, Linda Endress,
Geneva, Ohio, and Teresa Swiger, Parkersburg; 12 nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Terry
Swiger. Mr. Swiger was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in Vietnam. A
graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Marshville Cemetery
with the Rev. Dewain Herrod officiating.
Richard L. Tinnell
BRUCETON MILLS -- Richard Lee Tinnell, 70, of Bruceton
Mills, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, in Monongalia General Hospital. He was
born Jan. 23, 1929, in Fairmont, a son of the late Marvin Ernest and Opal
Irene Orr Tinnell Sr.
His wife, Margaret L. "Maggie¨ Fryman Tinnell, survives.
Also surviving are two sons, James B. Tinnell,
Boulder, Colo., and Gary Lee Tinnell, Dayton, Ohio; one daughter, Darlene
T. Walsh, one stepdaughter, Janet L. Warner, and one granddaughter, Joy
Walsh, all of Dayton; one brother, Robert O. Tinnell, Fairmont; one paternal
aunt, Mrs. Ethel Smith, Hazelton; and five nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Marvin E. Tinnell Jr.
Mr. Tinnell was Protestant. He was an Army veteran,
serving in the Korean Conflict. He was retired from the Chrysler Corporation
with over 30 years of service.
He was a member of the Morgantown Union Lodge No.
4, Morgantown Valley of Scottish Rite and was a 32nd degree of Wheeling
Consistory. He was a member of Royal Arch Chapter No. 30, Morgantown Commandry
No. 18, Osiris Temple, the Morgantown Shrine Club, Fairmont Shrine Club
and Mountaineer Patrol. He was also a member of Fort Henry York Rite College
and the Knight Masons.
