Barrick L. Brown

Barrick L. Brown, 79, of Richmond, Ind., formerly of Nutter Fort, died Sunday, July 25, 1999, in the Pinehurst Nursing Home, Centerville, Ind., following an extended illness.
He was born on July 5, 1920, in Newburg, a son of the late Lee C. Brown and Elsie Elizabeth Shay Brown.
His wife, Catherine Thomas Brown, preceded him in death.
Surviving are one son, Robert A. Brown, New Carlisle, Ohio; one daughter, Donna Lee Ryan, Richmond, Ind.; one brother, G. Lynn Brown, Nutter Fort; two sisters, Janille Estee and Vanetta Bowen, both of Nutter Fort; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one brother.
Mr. Brown retired from Union Carbide after 28 years of service. He served in the Army during World War II and was a life member of Meuse Argonne Post No. 573, Veterans of Foreign Wars of which he was a past commander.
He was a past commander of the Mountaineer County Council.
Friends will be received at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 E. Main St., Clarksburg, 5-9 p.m. Wednesday, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, with the Rev. D.D. Meighen presiding. Interment will be in the Floral Hills Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Hoy Carpenter

BUCKHANNON -- Hoy Carpenter, 94, of Ellamore, died Monday, July 26, 1999, at the home of his son, James.
He was born on April 15, 1905, in Hemlock, a son of the late Eli and Gertrude Tenney Carpenter.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Zickefoose Carpenter, Belington.
Also surviving are seven sons, Arden Carpenter, Phoenix, Ariz., Ralph Carpenter, Buckhannon, Lonnie Carpenter, Kesling Mill Road, Lonzo and Freeman Carpenter, both of Belington, James and Roger Carpenter, both of Ellamore; three daughters, Gertrude Neeley, Charleston, Berneda Rhodes, Clinton, Tenn., and Mary Carpenter, Belington; 37 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one brother, Sollaman Carpenter, Hemlock; one sister, Elva Lloyd, Hemlock.
He was also preceded in death by two sons, one daughter, four brothers and five sisters.
Mr. Carpenter was a timberman.

Sylvia D. Eddy

SALEM -- Sylvia Deloris Eddy, 75, of Liberty Street, Industrial, died at 8:50 a.m., Monday, July 26, 1999, at her residence, following an extended illness.
She was born on Oct. 25, 1923, at Buck Run, Ritchie County, a daughter of the late Thomas and Addie Ingram Dotson.
On Aug. 10, 1942 she married James A. Eddy, who preceded her in death on May 21, 1992.
Surviving are one daughter, Minnie Deloris "Sid" Carder, Industrial; six sons, Daniel R. "Danny" Eddy, St. Mary's, Michael Roy Eddy, James "Knuck" Eddy, Gary L. Eddy and twins, Wayne T. and Wade A. Eddy, all of Salem; two sisters, Jewel Dillon, Akron, Ohio, and Betty Jones, Ellenboro; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. Eddy was a member of the Salem Church of Christ.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting and crossword puzzles.
Friends will be received 7-9 p.m. today and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Harbert Funeral Home, 287 W. Main St., Salem, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Albert Farley officiating.

Velva J. Gifford

SHINNSTON -- Velva Jane Gifford, 85, of Wallace, died Monday, July 26, 1999, in Heartland Nursing Home.
She was born on Jan. 1, 1914, in Wallace, a daughter of the late John Robert and Mary Elizabeth Baker Shaw.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tillman A. Gifford, in 1968.
Surviving are one stepson, Robert Gifford, Wallace; 22 stepgrandchildren; 23 stepgreat-grandchildren; 18 stepgreat-great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by two stepsons, Bernard and Everett Gifford.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded by five sisters and six brothers.
Mrs. Gifford attended the Wallace Pentecost Church of God.
Friends will be received at the Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston, 7-9 p.m. today, where funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Joseph Shipley officiating. Burial will follow in the IOFF Cemetery, Brown.

Velma Godfrey

BUCKHANNON -- Velma Godfrey, 69, of Adrian, died Monday, July 26, 1999, in St. Joseph's Hospital.
She was born Jan. 8, 1930, in Buckhannon, a daughter of Stacie Tenney Smith, Buckhannon and the late Harvey Lowe Smith.
She is survived by her husband, Arley Lane Godfrey.
Also surviving three children, Arley Junior Godfrey, Buckhannon, Velma Sue Roby, Adrian and Randall Lowe Godfrey, Dallas, Texas.; four grandchildren, Melinda Eddy, Linda Gum, Shelby Godfrey and Darrius Godfrey, all of Buckhannon; two great-grandchildren; two stepchildren, Hilda Tenney, Buckhannon and Bill Godfrey, Bryan, Texas.; four stepgrandchildren; two brothers, Denzil Smith, Buckhannon, and Doyle Smith, Rootstown, Ohio; two sisters, Sada Gould, Buckhannon and Vada Ralston, Rootstown.
She was also preceded in death by one granddaughter and one brother.
Mrs. Godfrey was a homemaker. She was a member of Gould Christian Church.

V. Margarete Hiner

BUCKHANNON -- V. Margarete Coughlin Hiner, 80, of Cortland, Ohio, died Sunday, July 25, 1999, at Trumble Memorial Hospital, Warren, Ohio.
She was born Jan. 6, 1919, in Upshur County, a daughter of the late Michael A. Coughlin and Rose Mary Fortney Coughlin.
Her husband, Clarence F. Hiner, whom she married April 12, 1942, preceded her in death on Dec. 23, 1959.
Surviving are one sister, Dorothy Lance, Cortland; one brother, Paul Coughlin, Buckhannon; several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, James Coughlin and Vincent Coughlin.
Mrs. Hiner was a member of St. Roberts Catholic Church of Cortland. She worked at Reidboard Manufacturing in Buckhannon and retired from True Value Hardware in Cortland.

Pearl Hyre

GLENVILLE -- Pearl DeVaughn Hyre, 91, of Manassas, Va., formerly of Bell View Drive, Glenville, died at 8 p.m., Sunday, July 25, 1999, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas, Va.
She was born on Feb. 12, 1908, in Braxton County, a daughter of the late, Arthur I and Serepta Posey DeVaughn.
Her husband, Thomas W. "Tate" Hyre, preceded her in death in 1956.
Surviving are one son, Thomas J. Hyre, Springfield, Va.; one daughter, Christine H. Bush, Naples Fla.; six grandchildren, Linda Deaton, Jacksonville, N.C., Nancy L. Hyre, Brentwood, Tenn., Sue Ann Morgan, Centerville, Va., Rebecca B. Furbee, Snow Shoe, Sally C. Hash, Shepherdstown and John T. Hyre, Denver, Colo.; 11 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. Hyre was a former educator in Braxton County, a former employee of Glenville State College, Registrars Office and retired from the West Virginia Dept. of Social Services.
She attended Marshall University and Glenville State College.
She was a member of Glenville's Womans Club, Glenville Garden Club, Sutton Business and Professional Womans Club, and Trinity United Methodist Church.

Sarah V. Leroy

Sarah V. Leroy, 72, of Elk Avenue, Stonewood, died at 11 a.m., Monday, July 26, 1999, in United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.
She was born on Oct. 4, 1926, in Clarksburg, the daughter of the late James J. and Catherine Oliverio.
She is survived by her husband Frank J. Leroy.
Also surviving are two sons, Anthony F. Leroy, Clarksburg and Joseph C. Leroy, Stonewood.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Dominick J. and Louis A. Oliverio.
Mrs. Oliverio was a homemaker. She was a member of Our Lady Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Stonewood.
Friends will be received from noon-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Bartolo Funeral Home, 515 W. Pike St., Clarksburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Stonewood, with Father Edward Sabo Tor, as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Holy Cross Cemetery. A Scriptual wake service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Katheryn L. Oliverio

Katheryn L. Spadafore Oliverio, 86, formerly of 104 Southern Ave., Stonewood, died at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, July 25, 1999, in Meadowview Manor Health Care Center, following an extended illness.
She was born March 10, 1913, in San Giovanni en Fiore Cosenzas, Italy, a daughter of the late John Spadafore and Victoria Marra Spadafore.
Her husband, John V. Oliverio, preceded her in death on Dec. 10, 1983.
Surviving are two sons, David R. Oliverio, Bridgeport, and Samuel Anthony Oliverio, Clarksburg; one daughter, Diana Oliverio Ellis, Mt. Airy, N.C.; three sisters, Rosa Buhaj, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Tresa Spadafore, Stonewood, and Gloria Spadafore, Elyria, Ohio; two brothers, Joe Spadafore, Stonewood, and Frank Spadafore, Kearney, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Wendy Oliverio Funk, John David Oliverio and Jeffrey Brian Ellis; two great-grandchildren, Adam Funk and Lindsay Kay Funk; several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Anna DeMarco, Virginia Bourgeois and Mary Berardinelle; one brother, Tony Spadafore.
Mrs. Oliverio was a member of the Stonewood Christian and Missionary Alliance Church.
Friends will be received at the Bartolo Funeral Home from 6-9 p.m. today. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Stonewood Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, with the Rev. Fred Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the Stonewall Park Cemetery in Stonewood. Her body will lie in state at the church from 9-10 a.m.

Dr. Glenn B. Poling

PHILIPPI -- Dr. Glenn B. Poling, 76, of S. Main St., Philippi, died at 5:35 a.m., Monday, July 26, 1999, in the United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.
He was born Sept. 22, 1922, near Belington, a son of the late Daniel B. and Rosa Simon Poling.
He was united in marriage on June 25, 1947, to the former Evangeline Myers, who survives.
Also surviving are four daughters, Becki Poling, Nashville, Tenn., Pam Poling, Charleston, Suzie and her husband Rusty Gribble, Philippi, and Julie Johnson, Louisville, Ky.; two sons, Phil and his wife Sandy Poling, Easley, S.C., Lt. Col. Daniel and his wife Kathryn Poling, Ft. Carson, Colorado Springs, Colo.; four brothers, W. Obed Poling, Bridgeport, Oral T. Poling, Wadsworth, Ohio, John Poling, Marietta, Ohio, Perry Poling, Parma, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, Troy Olsson, Shawn Hornick, Scott DePriest, Randi Gribble, Jeff Gribble, Robin Johnson, Michael Johnson, Andrew Poling, Paul Poling, and Matthew Poling; several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Olen S. and Okey Poling.
Dr. Poling was a 1939 graduate of Belington High School. He attended Alderson Broaddus College and West Virginia University.
He graduated in 1951 from Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, University of Maryland.
He served as an officer in the Navy in South Pacific during World War II.
Following a year with the U.S. Public Health, serving in San Francisco, he practiced dentistry at the Myers Clinic from 1952 until the time of his retirement on Dec. 31, 1985.
He was a member of the American Dental Association, member and past president of Monongalia Valley Dental Society, member and past president of the Barbour County Board of Education from 1964-1974, and past president of Philippi Kiwanis Club.
He was a member and past Master of Bigelow Lodge, No. 52, A.F. & A.M., member and past High Priest of Tygarts Valley Chapter, No. 39, R.A.M., Deputy Grand Lecturer Emeritus of Royal Arch Masons in West Virginia, Demolay No. 11, Commandery Knights Templat, Grafton, member and past patron of Philippi Chapter, No. 41, Order Eastern Star, and was a member of the Crim Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served as Chairmain of Finance Committee.

John T. Rowh

GLENVILLE -- John Teddy Rowh, 78, of Stouts Mills, died at 7:20 a.m., Sunday, July 25, 1999, at Louis A. Johnson Veterans Adminstration Medical Center, Clarksburg, following a brief illness.
He was born on June 30, 1921, in Gilmer County, a son of the late, James N. and Iva Townsend Rowh.
He was united in marriage on Aug. 5, 1967, to the former Lerajean Jamison, who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Mary Kelley, Rancho Cordoba, Calif., Cecelia Sargent, Cleveland, Ohio, and Kim Heater, Glenville; two sons, John Rowh Jr., Luverne, N.D., and Mike Rowh, Parkersburg; two stepdaughters, Christine Lake and Cherrie Dean, both of Burnsville; one stepson, Mark Demastus, Stouts Mills; one sister, Nellie Groves, Stouts Mills; 22 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by two sons, Kevin and Joey, one brother and one sister.

Susan M. Weaver

PHILIPPI -- Susan Marie Weaver, 60, of Arden Community, Route 1, Moatsville, died at 12:10 p.m., Sunday, July 25, 1999, in the Broaddus Hospital, following an extended illness.
She was born on March 13, 1939, in Chicago, Ill., a daughter of the late, Nolda Ray and Mary Smith Murphy.
On July 14, 1976, she was married to James L. Weaver, who survives.
Also surviving are one son, David Glenn Poe, Clemtown Community; one daughter, Dana Poe Hooper, Tuscaloosa, Ala.; three stepsons, James Lee Weaver, Jr., Aliquippa, Pa., Richard Lane Weaver and Jack Randall Weaver, both of Arden; three stepdaughters, Anna Marie Marsh, Moatsville, Marsha Diane Serback and Kathryn Lynn Davis, both of Arden; two sisters, Mary Rita Morrison, Joliet, Ill., Penny Sipll, Plainfield, Ill., one brother, Frank Kostescki, Chicago, Ill.; two granddaughters; six stepgranddaughters; four stepgrandsons; one stepgreat-grandson.
She was also preceded in death by one son, Jeffrey Alan Poe and one brother James Kostescki.
 Mrs. Weaver was a homemaker.
 She was a member of the Ardent United Methodist Church.
