Jason G. Alkire

Jason Glenn Alkire, 23, of Salem, died Friday, July 24, 1998, following a brief illness.

Born Dec. 21, 1974, in Clarksburg, he was the son of Bud and Sue Burr Alkire.

He is also survived by two brothers, Carl Alkire, Salem, and Cary Alkire, Summersville; his maternal grandmother, Betty Sue Burr, Salem; his maternal great-grandmother, Wilma Flanigan, Salem; two nephews, one niece; and his fiancee, Shanna Partridge, West Union.

Mr. Alkire attended Vermont Baptist Church and was a self-employed motorcycle mechanic.

Friends will be received from 7-9 p.m. today and from 2-9 p.m. Monday at Greathouse Funeral Home, Salem Chapel, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Don Flanigan officiating. Burial will be in the Knights of Pythias Cemetery, Salem.

Willis D. Core

SHINNSTON -- Willis D. Core, 91, of Main Street, Shinnston, died Saturday, July 25, 1998, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 25, 1907, in Marietta, Ohio, a son of the late Guy F. and Etta E. Shanks Core.

Twice married, he is survived by his second wife, June Core, whom he married July 27, 1963. His first wife, Cleva Smith Core, preceded him in death July 5, 1962.

He is also survived by one stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, James and Nancy Riley, Shinnston, and one stepson, Danny Glover, Barnesville, Ohio; two brothers, Glenn Core, Morgantown, and Carrol Core, Star City; two sisters, Mrs. Fred (Lois) Fox, Mount Morris, Pa., and Mrs. George (LuLu) Pyles, Core; seven stepgrandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; one stepgreat-great-grandson and several nieces and nephews.

Two brothers, Beryl and Dana Core, and one stepgreat-grandson, preceded him in death.

Mr Core was a member of the First Baptist Church, Shinnston, where he was a deacon for life and assistant treasurer. He was a 32-degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the St. John's Lodge No 24 A.F. & A.M. He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows No. 16, Shinnston, and was a first aid instructor for the American Red Cross for 15 years. Mr. Core was a member of American Legion Post 31, Shinnston, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 573 of Clarksburg.

He was a member and past president of the Shinnston Volunteer Fire Department and a volunteer at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.

He was employed at the company store at Cassville, and came to Francis Mine to serve as the manager of the company store there for 21 years. He was owner and operator of Core's Amaco Station in Shinnston for 21 years until his retirement. Following his retirement he was employed by Shinnston Foodland and Harmer Funeral Home.

Friends will be received from 7-9 p.m. today and from 3-9 p.m. Monday at Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Ronald James officiating. Burial will be in Shinnston Masonic Cemetery. St. John's Lodge 24 A.F. & A.M. will conduct graveside rites. Memorial contributions may be made to People's Hospice, P.O. Box 1680, Clarksburg, W.Va., 26302.

Ernest R. Cutright

Ernest Robert Cutright, 94, of 105 Rose Ave., Clarksburg, died Saturday, July 25, 1998, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.

He was born Dec. 24, 1903, in Randolph County, a son of the late Harmon Henry and Birdie I. Lloyd Cutright.

His wife, Alice H. Radcliff Cutright, whom he married Sept. 26, 1925, survives.

He is also survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Juanita C. and William E. Reynolds, Clarksburg; two brothers, Stanley Cutright, Belington, and Basil Cutright, California; three sisters, Gladys Ellamore, Randolph County, Florence P. Pingley, Philippi, and Rosey Fox, Elkins; two half-brothers, Byard Cutright, Ohio, and Edward Cutright, Belington; three half-sisters, Dorothy Thomason, Vera Hanifan and Barbara Towney, all of Ohio; four grandchildren, Pamela R. Kamlowsky, W. Palm Beach, Fla., Robert L. Reynolds, Concord, Mass., Deborah Craig, Johnstown, Pa., and William E. Reynolds II, Clarksburg; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Cutright was the first field director for the National Camper and Hikers Association of West Virginia. He was an Admiral of the Line of the Cherry River Navy and a member of Roy E. Parrish Post 13 American Legion, Clarksburg, a life member of the Harrison County Senior Citizens and the American Association of Retired Persons. He had been active with the Holiday Ramblers Association and the Good Sam's Club. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War I.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 E. Main St., Clarksburg, where a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday with the Rev. Kenneth Kendall officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens where full military rites will be rendered.

Mabel V. Darnell

BELINGTON -- Mrs. Mabel Virginia Darnell, 91, a resident of Nella's Nursing Home, Crystal Springs and formerly of Belington, died Friday, July 24, 1998, at Davis Memorial Hospital, Elkins.

Born June 28, 1907, at Corinth, she was the daughter of the late George and Cora Liddy Kisner.

Her husband, John Albert Darnell, whom she married May 28, 1925, preceded her in death March 4, 1969.

She is survived by six daughters, Louise Righman, Nestorville, Mildred Moore, St. George, Josephine Nestor and Lillian White, both of Parsons, Allie Lou Raymond, Florida, and Shirley Duke, Annapolis, Md.; one son, John Darnell, Belington; one brother, Henry Arnold, Morgantown; 29 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.

One son, Donald Darnell, one daughter, Georgia Young, five grandchildren, two sisters and one brother preceded her in death.

Mrs. Darnell attended the schools of Preston County, and was a homemaker. She was a Methodist.

Friends will be received from 5-9 p.m. today and until 10 a.m. Monday, the funeral hour, at Talbott Funeral Home, 210 Bradenburg St., Belington. The Rev. Steve Rhodes will officiate services. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Nestorville.

Lovant R. Hays

NUTTER FORT -- Lovant R. Hays, 67, of Indiana Avenue, Stonewood, died Friday, July 24, 1998, at United Hospital Center, following an extended illness.

He was born June 8, 1931, at Flemington, the son of the late Dr. Stokely D. and Gladys Cleavenger Hays.

His wife, Ramona Poole Hays, survives.

He is also survived by one son, Mark A. Hays, Stonewood; and one brother, David J. Hays, Flemington.

Mr. Hays was a member of Vincent Memorial United Methodist Church, Yates Lodge No. 163, A.F. & A.M., and was a Scottish Rite mason.

He retired from Consolidated Natural Gas with more than 35 years of service.

Friends will be received from 2-9 p.m. today at Greathouse Funeral Home, Nutter Fort Chapel, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. D.D. Meighen officiating. Burial will be in Bridgeport Cemetery.

Russell O. Langer

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Russell Otto Langer, 64, of Scottsdale, Ariz., died Thursday, July 23, 1998, in Scottsdale.

He was born June 5, 1934, in Chicago, the son of the late Freidrick Otto and Mamie Russell Evans Langer.

He is survived by one daughter, Ericka Brook Cecil and her husband James, Clarksburg; one son, Milton Langer, Chicago; one brother, Milton Freidrick Langer, Morton Grove, Ill.; two grandchildren, Quinten Scott Cecil and Mariah Brook Cecil, both of Clarksburg; two nephews; one aunt and one cousin.

Mr. Langer was a graduate of the University of Arizona and worked as a computer programmer for Univac, Inc. of Phoenix, Ariz. Later, he was the owner of Russ' Carpet Sales, Scottsdale.

Friends will be received from 3-4 p.m. today, the funeral hour at Messinger Mortuary and Chapel, Scottsdale, Ariz. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, Ariz., 85014 or the Arizona Humane Society, 7601 E. Indian School Road, Scottsdale, Ariz., 85251.

Edith W. Lowe

BRIDGEPORT -- Edith W. Lowe, 90, of Shinnston, died Saturday, July 25, 1998, at Meadowview Manor.

She was born Jan. 30, 1908, in Macon, Ga., a daughter of the late Felix and Ernestine Rabun Johnston.

Her husband of 53 years, Dr. Charles Samuel Lowe, preceded her in death Aug. 19, 1987.

She is survived by one son, Charles S. Lowe Jr., Lansdale, Pa.; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Louise Marvin, Clarksburg; one brother, Felix Johnston, Monticello, Fla.; five grandchildren, Terri Anne Lowe, Hoboken, N.J., Mrs. Charlene Parkin, Minneapolis, Minn., Michelle Haynes and Samuel Mustachio, both of Clarksburg, and Matthew Alberts, Pennsboro, and four great-grandchildren.

One daughter, Helen Rebecca Lowe, two brothers, Ralph Johnston and Rabun Johnston, and one sister, Mrs. Helen Worley, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Lowe was a member of Bridgeport United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was a graduate of Florida State University with a degree in history.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at Allen Funeral Home, Bridgeport. The body will lie in state from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday, the funeral hour, at Bridgeport United Methodist Church. The Revs. Dale C. Waters and Mark E. Smith will perform services. Burial will be in Bridgeport Cemetery.

Arthur B. Lunsford

WESTON -- Arthur Brooks Lunsford, 83, of Salem, died Friday, July 24, 1998, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.

He was born Nov. 11, 1914, at Troy, a son of the late Arthur Pinkney and Margaret Jane Starcher Lunsford.

His wife, Onie Mary Lattea Lunsford, survives.

He is also survived by one son, Arthur Brooks Lunsford Jr., Salem; four daughters, Mrs. Joe (Vivian Lea) Keough, Bridgeport, Francis K. Reaser, West Union, Mrs. Larry (Patricia Ann) Jenkins, Salem, and Mrs. James (Karen Sue) Golomb, Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Freda Bell Lamb, Troy, and Mrs. Velma Bunner, Harrisville; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Six brothers, three sisters and two grandsons preceded him in death.

Mr. Lunsford was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 46th Signal Corps in the European Theatre. He served with the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935-36 and was a lifelong member of the Disable American Veterans.

He was a Methodist.

Friends will be received from 5-8 p.m. today at Boyle Funeral Home, 322 Main Ave., Weston, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Charles V. Madaus officiation. Burial will be in Rock Grove Cemetery, Linn.

William J. Martin

Mr. William Jack Martin, 76, of 816 Southern Ave., Stonewood, died Saturday, July 25, 1998, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg, following an extended illness.

He was born June 25, 1922, in Clarksburg, a son of the late Martin and Martha Oleta (Bennett) Martin.

He is survived by his second wife, June Snider Martin. His first wife, Lois Merle Martin, preceded him death in 1990.

He is also survived by three daughters, Mrs. Ronald E. (Brenda) Griffin, Bridgeport, Mrs. Thomas D. (Barbara) Courtney, Clarksburg, and Mrs. Roger (Debbie) Walker, Mooresville, N.C.; two stepsons, Paul J. Snider and James Larry Snider, both of Stonewood; one sister, Glenola Kender, Wichita Falls, Texas; six grandchildren, Mark Edward Griffin, Flemington, Rhonda Sue Douthit and Eric Allen Walker and Scott Martin Walker, all of Mooresville, Jackie Warner Boylard, Fort Wayne, Ind., and Jennifer Denise Warner, Clarksburg; four stepgrandchildren, Molissa Snider Jeffers, Cynthia Dawn Snider, Shelly Snider and Jamie Snider, all of Stonewood; five great-grandchildren and one stepgreat-grandson.

Mr. Martin was a member of the Stonewall United Methodist Church, where he had held many leadership positions. He was a member of the Nutter Fort Lions Club and the Clarksburg Lions Club with 34 years perfect attendence. He served as president of the Clarksburg Lions Club in 1972-73 and was District Governor 29I in 1981-82. He received the Leonard Jerrett Award in 1995 and the Melvin Jones Award in 1998.

Mr. Martin worked for Kraft Food as a salesman for 17 years and retired from Simpson Truck Sales with 23 years of service. He was also a general manager of the Industrial Blind Enterprise, Stonewood, which was the broom factory for the Lions Club. He was also a member of Clarksburg Masonic Lodge No. 155 A.F. & A.M., Nemesis Shrine in Parkersburg and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 482.

He was a past mayor of Stonewood and served on Stonewood City Council. Mr. Martin served with the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today and from 2-9 p.m. Monday at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 E. Main St., Clarksburg, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday with the Revs. S.L Green and Augustus Monu officiating. Burial will be in Bridgeport Cemetery. A Lion's Club Service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Myrna S. McIntyre

Myrna S. McIntyre, 65, of 201 Maple View Apartments, Clarksburg, died at 9:10 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 1998, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, following a brief illness.

She was born in Doddridge County, Sept. 3, 1932, a daughter of Coy L. Fitzpatrick, Monterville, and Hester David Fitzpatrick, Clarksburg.

Also surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Michael Carl and Carol McIntyre, Bridgeport; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shane and Jeff Cline, West Milford, Marlene and Joseph Toothman, Stonewood; one brother and sister-in-law, Marlin Z. and Charlotte Fitzpatrick, Clarksburg; seven grandchildren, Melissa, Michael and Shawn McIntyre, Sharon, Maria, Jolene and Bobbie Jo Toothman; two stepgrandchildren, Judy Carr and Debbie Miller; three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Mrs. McIntyre retired with 20 years of service in the probate offices of the Harrison County Clerk's Office.

She was a member of the Vincent Memorial United Methodist Church in Nutter Fort. She was past president of the Nutter Fort Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, past officer of the Harrison County Emergency Squad Auxiliary, a former member of the Ladies Aide of Morgan's Run and had been a volunteer at the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center.

Friends will be received from 7-9 p.m. today and 2-9 p.m. on Monday at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St. in Clarksburg, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. D.D. Meighen officiating. Burial will be in Stonewall Park Cemetery.

 

Joffre R. Sullivan

Joffre Rolland Sullivan, 43, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, San Jose, Calif.

He was born April 9, 1955, in Clarksburg, a son of the Robert G. and Eugenia "JeanÓ Sullivan of Clarksburg.

He is also survived by three brothers, R. Mark Sullivan and wife Natalie, Hollister, Calif., Thomas J. Sullivan and wife Jan, Clarksburg, and Timothy C. Sullivan and wife Terry, San Jose; one sister, Mary Beth Cooper and husband John of Clarksburg; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Greta Sullivan, Clarksburg; and 11 nieces and nephews.

Mr. Sullivan was a registered nurse for 22 years in the area of critical care nursing. He received an associate's degree from Parkersburg Community College, a bachelor's degree from San Francisco State University and his master's and doctoral degrees from San Jose State University. He was a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.

The nurses of O'Connor Hospital, San Jose, will hold a memorial mass at 2 p.m. Monday in the hospital chapel.

A memorial mass will be held locally at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3, at Immaculate Conception Church, Clarksburg, with the Rev. Leon Alexander presiding.

A private burial will be held by his family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

 

Nancy L. Yocum

BELINGTON -- Nancy L. Yocum, 51, of Belington, died Saturday, July 25, 1998, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, following an extended illness.

She was born Oct. 16, 1946, in Akron, Ohio, a daughter of the late Earl Henry and Johanna Wilhelmina Teille Price.

Her husband, Thomas Leon Yocum, whom she married Aug. 26, 1967, survives.

She is also survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas L. and Cindy Yocum II and Steve M. and Jennifer Yocum, all of Belington; one half-sister, Dorothy Salvato, Suisun, Calif.; three grandchildren, Stephanie Yocum, Jacob Yocum and Nathan Yocum, all of Belington; two stepgrandchildren, Tabitha Gordon and Daniel Gordon, both of Belington.

She was preceded in death by several half-brothers and half-sisters.

Mrs. Yocum was a homemaker and was formerly employed by Broaddus Hospital, Philippi. She was Roman Catholic and was a member of the ladies auxiliary of the Belington Volunteer Fire Department and the Grace Chapel United Methodist Church Ladies Aid.

Friends will be received from 4-9 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, the funeral hour, at Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel, Belington. The Rev. William Anderson will conduct services. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Memorial Cemetery.
