South Harrison topples RCB

South Harrison continued its come-from-behind heroics Wednesday as the Hawks defeated Robert C. Byrd 15-11, 15-13 in prep volleyball action.

South Harrison, which battled back to beat Buckhannon-Upshur on Monday, trailed the second match 11-9 before winning behind the serving of Hope West and Clenta Bond.

West finished the day with 29 sets, 10 assists and 14 points. Bond finished with six points, all in the second match.

Emily Barker had 13 sets, nine kills and 23 passes, while Casey Davisson finished with eight hits, four kills and 10 passes and Bobbi Jo Devericks had seven sets for the Hawks (4-1 overall, 3-0 Big 10).

Shawna Elder led the Eagles (2-2, 1-2) with five aces and 17 assists. Sheena Parson had five kills and Katie Critchfield added eight points and four kills.

LIBERTY WINS TWO: Liberty improved to 4-0 by winning matches against Lincoln and Braxton on Wednesday at Braxton County High School.

Liberty beat Lincoln 15-12, 15-4 as Lauren Todd had nine points and a kill. Christina Lane added seven points and an ace, while Gena Matheny had seven points, two aces, three kills and an assist.

Liberty beat Braxton 14-16, 15-8, 15-11 as Patricia Savina had 14 points, an ace and 10 assists.

Stephanie Matthey added seven points, two aces, five assists and three kills, while Matheny had four points, an ace, nine kills and four assists. Audra Hamrick also had five points, three aces and eight kills for Liberty.

HAWKS DEFEAT IRISH: Josh Stonestreet was medalist with a 41 as South Harrison defeated Notre Dame 169-175 on Wednesday.

South Harrison's Josh Doak and Notre Dame's Chris Kassis and Nick Geiliene had 42s.

FAIRMONT SENIOR WINS: Fairmont Senior's boys continued their cross country success, but the school's girls team fell to Elkins at Wednesday's Buckhannon-Upshur Invitational 5K.

The defending state champion boys team was led by Mike Barzolf, who finished first with a time of 17 minutes, 31 seconds. The Polar Bears finished with 25 points, 36 ahead of second-place Morgantown. Buckhannon-Upshur was third, while Philip Barbour, North Marion, Elkins and Robert C. Byrd rounded out the field.

Robert C. Byrd's boys team was led by Anthony Veltri, who finished 38th at 23:22.

The Fairmont Senior girls team had 61 points, nine behind Elkins. Morgantown was third, while North Marion, East Fairmont, Philip Barbour, Buckhannon-Upshur and Robert C. Byrd followed.

Robert C. Byrd's Liann Gollochling finished 21st at 23:49.

INDIANS TOP POLAR BEARS: Travis Paul and Justin Watson scored two goals apiece as Bridgeport beat Fairmont Senior 9-0 in boys prep soccer late Tuesday at Fairmont.

College volleyball

CONCORD BEATS S-TU: Concord jumped out to a two-set lead and held off Salem for a West Virginia Conference victory at Salem.

The Mountain Lions won the first two sets by scores of 15-6, 16-14 before Salem won game three 15-10. Concord then won the fourth game 15-2 to take the match.
