When Bridgeport played preseason favorite Philip Barbour in volleyball last week, BHS coach Becky Sabatelli was looking for her players to lift their performance to a new level.

While all six players did just that in the Indians' upset of the Colts, Christa Romesburg led the way, knocking down 15 spikes.

"Christa was definitely one of the keys," Sabatelli said.

"She's been a key contributor the whole year," Sabatelli commented.

Romesburg, a 5-foot-8 junior and two-year starter, dominates on the front line for the Indians and is also a skilled server.

She had 8 spikes against Grafton and 7 spikes against Lincoln as Bridgeport went 3-0 last week.

For her efforts, Romesburg is the One Valley Bank/Clarksburg Exponent-Telegram's Female Athlete of the Week.

She wasn't the only Bridgeport athlete to step up as kicking specialist Travis Paul battled through a foot injury to boot the Indians past Liberty 3-0.

Paul, who also scored 2 goals in a soccer game earlier in the week, kicked a 26-yard field goal and averaged 42.4 yards on his five punts.

"Travis hurt his foot in that soccer game and didn't think he'd get to play," BHS football coach Bruce Carey said.

"But, he got cleared by his doctor on Friday and it's a good thing," Carey said.

"We kind of got spoiled by Zach Anglin last year, but Travis has stepped right in and has done a heck of a job."

Paul is the One Valley Bank/Clarksburg Exponent-Telegram Male Athlete of the Week.
