(Thursday, August 20) What was intended to be the beginning of the high school cross country season ended up being a glorified practice session for the Robert C. Byrd and Bridgeport cross country teams Wednesday.
Byrd coach Bob Steele said he mistakenly thought the season could start this week, so went ahead with the meet.
But afterward, Steele said he found out the season cannot officially begin until Sept. 2.
That meant the competition Wednesday cannot be counted as an official result, he said.
Steele said he felt terrible.
"If I had any inkling this meet wouldn't have counted, it wouldn't have been run," Steele said.
