Preston drops Lincoln; BHS topples Byrd girls

SHINNSTON -- Angie Matheny had 11 points and five kills while Josie Heldreth had six points and an assist as Lincoln (0-6) lost a volleyball match to Preston.

Preston won 15-5, 2-15, 15-8.

PB SLIPS PAST LEWIS: Cassie Shaffer scored 14 points and had five aces to lead Philip Barbour past Lewis County 15-13, 15-5.

Jessica Maunz had seven kills, while Sarah Nestor and Sarah Jones had three kills for the Colts (3-1).

Philip Barbour travels to Grafton today for a Big 10 match.

BHS GIRLS BLANK RCB: Bridgeport's Vanessa Reif scored two goals and had two assists to help lead the Indians past Robert C. Byrd 9-0.

Lauren Dieringer added two goals for Bridgeport (6-4-1).

The Indians return to action Friday when they play Huntington High at Buckhannon-Upshur High School.

BRIDGEPORT WINS: Nate Testman scored both goals as Bridgeport improved to 3-1-2 with a 2-0 victory over Hedgesville on Saturday.

 

Golf

WESLEYAN INVITATIONAL: Several of the area's college golf teams fared well in the West Virginia Wesleyan College Fall Invitational on Sunday and Monday at Bel Meadow.

Davis & Elkins was second at 629, behind Concord's score of 606. Glenville State was third at 632, Wesleyan's A squad fourth at 637, and Fairmont State fifth at 641.

Wesleyan's B squad was ninth in the 12-team field, while Salem-Teikyo finished 11th.

Davis & Elkins' David Spitzer and Anthony Redden of Wesleyan finished at 154. They made the all-tournament team.

ALUMNI TOURNAMENT: The third annual Shinnston High School Alumni Golf Tournament was held Sept. 12 at the Green Hills Country Club.

Bill Myers, Johnny Brennan and Fred Ford won the 3-man scramble with a 60. Victor George, Clint George and Ted Moore were second at 62. One back at 63 was the team of Chris Ballard, David Hanna and Fred Painter.

Proceeds from the tournament go toward scholarships for Lincoln High School students.
