George L. Barker

GLENVILLE -- George L. Barker, 92, of West Milford, formerly of North Lewis Street, Glenville, died at 5:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, at Heartland Nursing Home, Clarksburg following an extended illness.

He was born July 4, 1906, in Gilmer County, a son of the late Benjamin and Martha Snyder Barker.

Twice married, he was first married to Eula M. Garrett on Oct. 16, 1926, who preceded him in death May 25, 1985. His second wife Alice Stead, whom he married July 17, 1986, survives.

Also surviving are one stepdaughter, Darlene Stead, Good Hope, and one sister, Mary McGuire, Clarksburg.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters.

Mr. Barker was a retired farmer, former coal miner and had worked for West Virginia Department of Highways, U.S. Postal Service and Glenville State College. He was a member of Glenville Church of Christ.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, at Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., Glenville. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Noel Roberts officiating. Interment will follow in the Meadow Lane Cemetery.

Joseph M. Beto

Joseph Michael Beto, 73, of 512 Stanley Ave., Clarksburg, died Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, at his residence.

He was born July 14, 1925, in Clarksburg, a son of the late Tony Beto and Mary Josephine Aiello Beto.

His wife, Helen M. Lowther Beto, survives.

Also surviving are four daughters, Mary Ann Peacock, Baltimore, Md., Catherine Frances Bowman, Alexandria, Va., and Georgianna Kintz and Jonienne Hazel, both of Clarksburg; two sisters, Catherine Frederick, Clarksburg, and Jean Smith, Nutter Fort; three brothers, Franklin Beto, Hinton, Michael Beto, Springfield, Va., and Robert Beto, Clarksburg; seven grandsons, Gino Haddaway, Joseph Bowman, Mathew Kintz, Marcus Kintz, Joshua Kintz, Jeremiah Hazel, and John W. Hazel; one granddaughter, Kimberly Ann Haddaway; one great-grandson and three great-granddaughters.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Ronald Anthony Beto, and two brothers, Bernard Beto and John Beto.

Mr. Beto was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Stonewood. He previously worked for Marks Construction Company for several years and retired from Central West Virginia Authority where he had been an active member of the board. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Meuse Argonne Post 573.

Friends will be received from 2-9 p.m. today, at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St., Clarksburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Stonewood, with the Rev. Edward Sabo T.O.R. as celebrant. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. A Biblical Prayer Service will be held at 7 p.m. today, at the funeral home. Military Graveside rites will be accorded.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the M.V.A. Hospice of Marion County, 1322 Locust Ave., Fairmont, W. Va. 26554.

William B. Hoskins

WESTON -- William Barnes Hoskins, died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, in Jacksonville, Fla.

He was born Oct. 26, 1917, in Weston, a son of the late Karl Leete Hoskins and Kathryn Barnes Hoskins.

His wife, Helen Snyder Hoskins, survives.

Also surviving are one sister, Etta Ruth Weigl; four children, Warren, Karyl, Dorothy and Walter, and three grandchildren.

Mr. Hoskins was a composer.

A memorial program and celebration of his life featuring performances of some of his compositions and tributes by family, friends, colleagues, and former students of his from Jacksonville University was held on Sunday, June 21 in Jacksonville, Fla.

Interment of his ashes is planned for 11 a.m. Monday, at the Masonic Cemetery in Weston.

Richard Kowalsky

CHESTER TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Richard L. Kowalsky, of Chester Township, died Thursday, July 30, 1998, at Meridla South Pointe Hospital in Warrensville Heights.

He was born Oct. 29, 1930, in Clarksburg, a son of the late Peter J. and Alphretta Gaston Kowalsky.

His wife, Mary A. Weisensee Kowalsky, survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Michael R. Kowalsky, Parma Heights, Ohio, and Terry W. Kowalsky, Denver, Col.; two daughters, Shelley L. Plummer, Houston, Texas, and Rebecca D. Duffy, Cleveland, Ohio; two sisters, Helen Starcher, Mentor, Ohio, and Genevie Duty, Lancaster, Pa.; 11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Timothy J. Kowalsky; two sisters, Anna Mikiewski and Frances Riddle, and a brother, Edward Kowalsky.

He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran, serving during the Korean War. He was a retired station manager with B.P. Oil Company (formerly Standard Oil Company) at the Chester Township station and was a certified auto mechanic. He was a member and treasurer of Geauga Radio Control Flying Club and served as an instructor as well as building his own planes.

Services were held at Gatozzi and Son Funeral Home, in Chester Township, on Monday, Aug. 3, with the Rev. John Duty, his nephew, officiating. Burial was in Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chester Township.

Stacie Mae Lake

BUCKHANNON -- Stacie Mae Lake, 81, of 5 Maple Lane, Danbury, Conn, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998, in Danbury Hospital.

She was born April 24, 1917, in Buckhannon, a daughter of the late Charles Hayes Lane and Bertha Tenney Lane.

Her husband, Clyde T. Lake, preceded her in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Patricia A. Tenney, Bethel, Conn., and Shirley M. Lake Cabezudo, Danbury, Conn.; six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one grandson, Dennis Tenney.

Mrs. Lake was employed by the State of Connecticut and retired from Fairfield Hills Hospital where she worked as a seamstress.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at Mt. Lebanon Church with the Rev. Dennis L. Miller officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Union Church Cemetery.

Clarsie McElwain

Clarsie Mae McElwain, 77, of Route 2, Clarksburg, died Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, in Ruby Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.

She was born July 28, 1921, in Gilmer County, a daughter of the late Walter L. and Lena Hawkins Beckner.

Her husband, Edgar R. McElwain, preceded her in death on July 16, 1977.

Surviving are three sons, Carl Ankrom, Ohio, Walter L. McElwain, Clarksburg, and Jackie Lee McElwain, Homestead, Fla.; two daughters, Mrs. Andrew (Sharon Sue) Grega, Clarksburg, and Mrs. Richard (Shirley) Genteel, Anmoore; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and one brother, Charles W. Beckner, Fairmont.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Charles Harry McElwain; one daughter, Mrs. Leonard (Lena) Hardway, and four sisters, Mrs. William (Hazel) King, Mrs. Daniel (Mary) Hollandsworth, Mrs. Charles (Florence) Harris, and Stella Bell Beckner.

Mrs. McElwain was Baptist.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, at Davis Funeral Home, Clarksburg Chapel, 443 W. Pike St. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Gary Carr officiating. Interment will follow in Braxton County Cemetery, Sutton.

Elvia Sturms

BELINGTON -- Elvia Sturms, 90, of 368 Chestnut St., Belington, died at 10:40 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998, in Davis Memorial Hospital, Elkins, following a brief illness.

She was born May 1, 1908, at Belington, a daughter of the late L.P. and Carrie Armstrong Fawley.

Her husband, Ralph Sturms, preceded her in death in 1977.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Leon (Helen) Bibey, Belington, with whom she made her home; one son, Guy Sturms, Sharps Chapel, Tenn.; one brother, Charles Perry Fawley, Allen Park, Mich; 22 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Wilbur Charles Sturms; one daughter, Rose Lee McDaniel; one sister, Elizabeth Marie Kelley, and two brothers, Thomas Jefferson Fawley and Robert Lee Fawley.

Mrs. Sturms was a homemaker and former co-owner, along with her husband, of Sturms' chicken farm. She was Protestant.

Friends will be received from 3-9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, at Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel, Belington. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in the Stringtown Cemetery.

Kathleen S. Taggart

Mrs. Kathleen Smith Taggart, of Bridgeport, died Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, at her residence.

She was born in Masontown, a daughter of the late Alfred Lee Smith and Ota Lee Blaney Smith.

Her husband, Elmo Taggart preceded her in death in 1966.

Surviving are two brothers, Elmer W. Smith, Morgantown and William Fred Smith, Masontown; two sisters, Gladys Smith Lane, Arlington, Va., and Nora Merrill, Castleberry, Ala.; four nieces, Malene Davis, Arthurdale, Malisa Clarkson and Harriet Simpson, both of Masontown and Kathryn Hare, New Jersey; three nephews, Ed Feather, Mt. Morris, Pa., Steve Smith, Reedsville and Joe Merrill, Biglerville, Pa.; three great-nieces and two great-nephews.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Alva Buster Smith and Glenn W. Smith, and one sister, Grace Smith Feather.

Mrs. Taggart had owned and operated the Stylorama Beauty Salon in Clarksburg for over 40 years. The salon at one time employed 17 stylists and was the largest privately owned salon in West Virginia. Stylorama was originally located on Sixth Street and was relocated in May of 1984 to a West Pike Street location. The elaborate Christmas illuminations of the Stylorama were an annual highlight of the holiday season in downtown Clarksburg.

She was a member of the Bridgeport United Methodist Church and was a member of Queen Esther Chapter 11, Order of Eastern Star and Omega Chapter 15, White Shrine of Jerusalem and the Ladies Oriental Shrine. She also belonged to the Women of the Moose and the auxiliaries of the Elks and Masontown Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a member of the Clarksburg Cosmetology Chapter. During two presidential administrations she was invited and attended the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C.

Mrs. Taggart was a graduate of Masontown High School and in 1973 was honored as an Outstanding Alumnus. In addition to being a successful business person, she dedicated much of her life to community service, especially in helping children. She was a generous sponsor of youth camps, scholarships and numerous school projects.

Friends will be received from 2-9 p.m. today, at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 E. Main St., Clarksburg. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Bridgeport United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dale C. Waters officiating. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the 2 p.m. service. Interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery. Queen Esther Chapter 11, Order of Eastern Star will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. today.
