Alecia D. Akari

SHINNSTON -- Alecia Denise Pavich Akari, 42, of Mechanicsburg, Pa., died at 2 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, in Harrisburg Hospital, Harrisburg, Pa., following a brief illness.

She was born Nov. 9, 1955, in Fairmont, a daughter of Elizabeth Sparish Pavich, Hutchinson, and the late Thomas Pavich.

Also surviving are one son, Tarek Akari and one daughter, Tamara Akari, both at home; one brother, Luke Pavich, Hutchinson; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Ms. Akari worked at Kelly Associates in Camp Hill, Pa., as a medical assistant.

Friends will be received at 10 a.m. today at Dorsey Funeral Home, Shinnston. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Austin Burrough officiating. Interment will follow in the Shinnston Masonic Cemetery.

 

Emmie L. Artman

BUCKHANNON -- Emmie Louise Artman, 70, of Ireland, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at St. Joseph's Hospital.

She was born Oct. 27, 1927, in Vandergrift, Pa., a daughter of the late Thomas Alfred Rearick and Edna Blanche Byers Rearick Day.

Her husband, Robert Artman, preceded her in death.

Surviving are one son, Rick Thomas Artman, two grandchildren, Jason and Jeremy Artman, all of Georgia, and one brother, Howard D. and wife, Jean J. Rearick, Ireland.

She was also preceded in death by her stepfather, Joseph W. Day.

Mrs. Artman was a homemaker and a member of The Kingdom Hall Of Jehovah's Witnesses Church in Weston.

John C. Baker

GASSAWAY -- John Calvin "J.C." Baker, 95, of Gassaway, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, in Braxton County Memorial Hospital, following a long illness.

He was born July 29, 1903, in Braxton County, a son of the late David H. and Hattie Bender Baker.

His wife, Blanche Akers Baker, survives.

Also surviving are two sons, George Christ Baker, Gassaway, and John Paul Baker, Summersville; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Ruth B. Smith, three brothers and two sisters.

Mr. Baker was founder and president of J.C. Baker and Son, Inc., Baker Oil Company and Hampton Inn of Summersville, Inc.

He had been involved in agriculture since he was a boy, with farms in various counties. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and Independent Oil and Gas Association and was an avid cattleman.

Mr. Baker left school at age 15 and began buying and shipping cattle to points as far away as Baltimore, Md. In 1939 he became a Texaco distributor and still owns several locations now under the Citco Brand. In 1961 he purchased drilling rigs and began exploring for oil and natural gas. His company now operates 150 producing wells and continues to drill and explore for oil and gas.

When Texaco pulled out of West Virginia in 1978, J.C. purchased their terminal facilities in Charleston and formed Baker Oil Company, which provides gasoline and fuel loading for many companies throughout the state. Recently, in October 1996, he opened the Hampton Inn of Summersville, recognized in 1997 as one of the top hotels in the chain.

Cecil C. Campbell

Cecil C. Campbell, 76, of Louisville, Ky., formerly of Sand Fork, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998, in Audubon Hospital, Louisville, following an extended illness.

His wife, the former Edith 12318504Gambrell, survives.

Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Campbell was a veteran and retired employee of Rainbow Bakerys. He was a member of Epiphany United Methodist Church.

A funeral service was held Aug. 18 in the chapel of Evergreen Funeral Home in Louisville. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery, Louisville.

Richard B. Carpenter

Richard Bruce Carpenter, 48, of 460 S. Chestnut St., Clarksburg, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, in Stonewood, following a brief illness.

He was born Aug. 14, 1950, in Clarksburg, a son of James Russell Carpenter Sr., Stonewood, and the late Ruth Hughes Carpenter, who died on Feb. 14, 1998.

Also surviving are two brothers, James Russell Carpenter Jr., Lumberport, and Ronald Wayne Carpenter, Clarksburg; one sister, Barbara Lynn Kulick, Stonewood.

Mr. Carpenter attended the Freewill Baptist Church and previously worked at Anchor Hocking. He had been self employed as a contractor before working as apartment manager at River Bend Apartments.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Leonard Madia officiating. Interment will follow in Stonewall Park Cemetery.

Ethel V. Currey

GRAFTON -- Ethel Virginia Currey, 98, of Route 4, Valley Inn community, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at her residence.

She was born Oct. 28, 1899, in Harrison County, a daughter of the late Columbus and Ella Cropp Hustead.

Her husband, Brady Currey, whom she married Feb. 24, 1923, preceded her in death on July 27, 1978.

Surviving are three daughters, Mary Kathryn Lake, Baltimore, Md., Betty J. Knotts, Grafton, and Mrs. Ella Virginia Strawser and husband, Gene, Glen Burnie, Md.; one son, Charles Brady "Bud" Currey and wife, Carole, Pasadena, Md.; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one half sister, Ellen Bartlett, Harrison County; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by five sisters, two brothers, two half brothers and one half sister.

Mrs. Currey taught school at Hepzibah and Harmony Grove and attended the Beulah Baptist Church. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and homemaker.

Maxine C. Eakins

Maxine Coulson Eakins, 71, of Concord, Ala., formerly of Clarksburg, died Tuesday, June 2, 1998.

Surviving are one daughter, Robin Anderson Nelms; two sons, John L. Eakins and Michael Eakins; grandchildren, Emily Michele Anderson, Kelly Rae Coe, Mary Quinn Eakins and Anna Maria Eakins.

A memorial service was held at Johns-Ridout's Funeral Parlor in Alabama. The family suggests that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Clara E. Farley

Clara E. Robinson Farley, 61, of Route 1, Box 205 D9D, Lost Creek, died at 5:40 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, in United Hospital Center following a lengthly illness.

<ll7,11>She was born Oct. 30, 1936, in Clarksburg, a daughter of the late Joseph Cash and Delania Armstrong Cash.

Surviving are three sons, Chester W., Joseph S. and James E. Robinson, all of Clarksburg; three daughters, Debra Kovar and Delania Conner, both of Clarksburg, and Mary Oder Nunley, Proctorville, Ohio; one sister, Dorothy Springer, Marshville Road; eight grandsons, Clarence Robinson Brady, David K. Oder Jr., Joseph C. Kovar, Jason L. Conner, Chester P. Robinson, J.R. Robinson, Charles W. Robinson and Brannon Robinson; three granddaughters, Mary E. Kovar, Tonya M. and Santana Robinson; two great-grandsons; three daughters-in-law, Tonja Robinson, Tammy K. Robinson and Charlene Case; three sons-in-law, Lester Lee Nunley, David Oder Sr. and Felix S. Kovar; and nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph, Charles and Clarence Cash.

Mrs. Farley was a member of the American Flint Glass Workers Union, AFL CIO. She had retired from Anchor Hocking Co. with 18 years of service.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 E. Main St., Clarksburg. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Chaplain W. Delma Parris will conduct the service. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

William M. Frazier

William McKinley Frazier, 92, of Mount Clare, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, in United Hospital Center following an extended illness.

<ll7,11>He was born Jan. 23, 1906, in Lewis County, a son of the late James William Frazier and Ida Gibson Frazier.

His wife of 69 years, Lessie Gay Stutler Frazier, preceded him in death on June 17, 1997.

Surviving are three sons, James W. and wife, Ina Frazier and Martin Frazier, both of Mount Clare, and Francis E. and wife, Willa Jean Frazier, Stonewood; one daughter-in-law, Bernadine Frazier; 13 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having also been preceded in death by two sons, Bernard Frazier and Joseph Frazier; three brothers, Wilmer, Gibson and David Frazier and three sisters, Alice Lough, Virginia Lough and Maxine Lough.

Mr. Frazier attended the Mount Clare Methodist Church. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the United Mine Workers of America District 31.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today at McGlumphy Funeral Home, 260 E. Main St., with the Rev. Benjamin Samms officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

Adeline V. Harbert

SHINNSTON -- Adeline Virginia Knight Harbert, 77, of Jones Run Road, Lumberport, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, in United Hospital Center following an extended illness.

She was born March 16, 1921, in Little Rock Camp, a daughter of the late Charles E. and Elsie Stier Knight.

Her husband, Edward ''Ted'' Harbert, preceded her in death on Dec. 26, 1981.

Surviving are two sons, Douglas S. Harbert, Stonewood, and Gary E. Harbert Sr., Jones Run, Lumberport; one daughter, Patricia A. Fisher, Fairmont; five grandchildren, Michael Harbert, Lumberport, Thomas Fisher, Fairmont, Martha Fisher Hoy, Charleston, Polly and Gary Harbert Jr., Lumberport; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, William Knight, Route 2, Bridgeport, Fred Knight, Texas, Jim Carrico, Ohio; four sisters, Anna Allen, Texas, Beulah Hutson, Perry, Ohio, Betty Hooper, Baltimore, Md., and Ruby Davisson, Wintersville, Ohio, and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by one sister, Eva Harbert and two half brothers, Willard and Ed Carrico.

Mrs. Harbert was a member of the Four Creeks Homemakers Club and was Baptist.

Friends will be received from 3-9 p.m. today at Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Thomas Bell officiating. Interment will follow in the Lumberport Lions Club Cemetery.

Marcia D. Holder

HONEY BROOK, Pa. -- Marcia D. Holder, 39, of 4684 Clinton Road, Mohnton, Pa., died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at her home following a lengthy illness.

She was born in Weston, a daughter of George Cooper, Weston, and the late Willa Lea Exline Cooper.

Her husband, Mark C. Holder, survives.

Also surviving are her stepmother, Diane Cooper, Weston; one son, Adam W. Holder, two daughters, Stacey J. Holder and Stephanie L. Holder, all at home; one brother, George Cooper, Charleston; one half brother, Tom Cooper, one sister, Vicci Cooper, both of Weston; two stepsisters, Beth Shinn, Lander, Wyo., and Doreen Claypoole, Grafton; one half sister, Becky Cooper, Weston, and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Holder was an active member of St. Thomas Episcopal, Morgantown, Pa., serving as former Sunday school teacher, a vestry member and the Educational Committee. She was also on the Steering Committee of the Chadd Organization of Berks Co.

Gertie H. Lewis

Gertie H. Lewis, 89, of 306 Ohio Ave., Nutter Fort, died at 2:34 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.

She was born on Hackers Creek, Upshur County, Aug. 8, 1909, a daughter of the late Horace H. Mohler and Mary E. Lewis Mohler.

Her husband, Raymond D. Lewis, whom she married April 16, 1926, preceded her in death on July 5, 1976.

Surviving are nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by five sisters, Laura Mohler, Blanche Nestor, Eugenia Mohler, Icie V. White and Carnie M. Sandy.

Mrs. Lewis was a homemaker and had worked with her husband on their farm in Johnstown.

Friends will be received at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 E. Main St. in Clakrsburg, from 5-9 p.m. today where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. D.D. Meighen will officiate. Interment will follow in the Johnstown Cemetery.

Opal Ludwick

PHILIPPI -- Opal Ludwick, 89, a resident of Route 1, Philippi, died at 1:25 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at her home, following an extended illness.

She was born June 17, 1909, in the Silent Grove area near Philippi, a daughter of the late Oliver Francis and Buena Vista Lindsey Wolfe.

Her first husband, Fred Loar, preceded her in death in 1933. Her second husband, N.C. "Tobe" Hardin, preceded her in death on July 14, 1962. Her third husband, Paul Ludwick, whom she married March 26, 1963, survives.

Also surviving are one granddaughter, Mrs. Gerard (Rossala Jane) Boutin, Seminole, Fla.; one great-granddaughter, Suzanne Nichole Boutin, a student at Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Robert (Mary Lee) Fridley and Mary Jane Ludwick, both of Philippi, and Mrs. Carl (Cora Sue) Shaffer, Akron, Ohio; one stepson, Toby Hardin, Cortland, Ohio; one sister, Mrs. George (Caroline) Cutlip, Bridgeport; two brothers, Francis Wolfe, Palm Harbor, Fla., Blair Wolfe, Fairmont; several stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Ladonna June Stemple; four stepsons, N. Carl Hardin, George Dallas Hardin, Oliver Wolfe Hardin and his twin, Andrew Stalnaker Hardin, who died in infancy; two sisters, Mary Hardin and Lelia Corder and four brothers, Delbert Wolfe, Lindsey Wolfe, Dallas Wolfe and Dorwin Wolfe.

Mrs. Ludwick was a graduate of the Davis Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and the Fairmont General Hospital Nurse Anesthetist Program. She was a former registered nurse in the Monongalia General Hospital at Morgantown and a former nurse<fn115>/<fn7>anesthetist and nursing supervisor in the Grafton City Hospital.

She was a 50 year member of Naomi Chapter 12, Order of the Eastern Star, Grafton, and a member of James Barbour Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.

Frank D. Plum

PARSONS -- Frank David Plum, 52, a resident of St. George, died Saturday evening, Aug. 22, 1998, at his home. He had been in his usual health and his death was attributed to a heart attack.

He was born Feb. 1, 1946, in Hambleton, a son of the late Elmer G. and Nellie Nestor Plum and his stepmother, Novella Plum.

His wife, the former Rosalie Boyles, survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Frank David Plum Jr., Glady, Robert Plum and Richard Plum, both at home; two daughters, Barbara Ann Plum, Glady, and Chatel Plum, at home; five brothers, Walter Plum, Tunnelton, Robert Plum, Maurertown, Va., John Plum, Elkins, Jack Plum, Hambleton, and Elmer Plum, Davis; one stepbrother, Eugene Kepner, Columbus, Ohio; four sisters, Helen Ours, Baton Rouge, La., Dorothy Scott, Thomas, Elma Jean Paolone, Girard, Ohio, and Barbara Teets, Manassas, Va.; one stepsister, Mary Carol White, Ridgeley, and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Plum attended the schools of Hambleton and Parsons. He was a heavy equipment operator, worked for 22 years at Arnold Brothers of Oakland, Md., and at the time of his death, was employed by Dewey Wilfong of Parsons.

He was Protestant and a member of the National Rifle Association.

Flossie A. Post

BRIDGEPORT -- Flossie Alberta Post, 72, of North Oak Street, Anmoore, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, following an extended illness.

She was the daughter of the late Roy Thomas and Bessie Wilmoth Sigley.

Her husband, Dennis M. Post, preceded her in death.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Renelda Jean Hartley and Sam Hartley; two brothers, Franklin D. Sigley, Steelacoon, Wash., and Earl A. Sigley, Bristol, Va.; one sister, Cora Mae Snyder, Grafton; five grandchildren, Tonya J. Hartley Abraham, Benjamin D. Hartley, Tabitha S. Hartley, Tasha R. Hartley, and Tessa D. Hartley, and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Roy Leonard Sigley and one sister, Opal M. Rosier.

Mrs. Post was a homemaker and a member of the Bible Baptist Temple, Stonewood.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Chuck Madaus and Pastor Downing Gregory officiating. Interment will follow in the Bridgeport Cemetery.

Minnie L. Shaver

MANNINGTON -- Minnie Myers Lough Shaver, 90, of Clarksville, Tenn., formerly of Seven Pines community, died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, in Dover, Tenn.

She was born Oct. 29, 1907, in Monroe County, Ohio, a daughter of the late William and Emma Pearl Myers.

Surviving are one daughter, Docia Stevens, Clarksville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Shirley Lough, Kalamazoo, Mich., and Lance and Carol Lough, Plainwell, Mich.; three brothers, Harold Myers and Ray Myers, both of Fairmont, and Arthur Myers, Plum Run; four sisters, Gertrude Briggs, Kalamazoo, Betty Hawkins and Geraldine Johnson, both of Weirton, and Wilma Grubb, Clarksburg; 19 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Lough in 1945; her second husband, John ''Buck'' Shaver in 1985; two sons, Walter "Benton" Lough and Clare Lough; two brothers, Henry and Earl Myers and one sister, Jessie Fluharty.

Mrs. Shaver was a member of the United Baptist Church on Plum Run near Mannington and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Elks in Mannington. She was active in the Democratic Party in Marion County and assisted with the Firemans Booth at the Plum Run Fair.

She had worked in the restaurant at the Livestock Sales in Mannington and for the Telephone Company in Mannington for several years.

Wilber Singleton

BRIDGEPORT -- Wilber "Barney" Singleton, 76, of Route 3, Clarksburg, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998.

He was born July 23, 1922, in Sutton, a son of the late Jarrett and Clara Harper Singleton.

His wife, Mildred "Millie" Singleton survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Mary Jean White, Pt. St. Lucie, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Clifford Juniata Singleton, Clarksburg, Mrs. Jack (Lenabelle) Hollister, Ripley; two brothers, Harley Singleton, Clarksburg, and Bliiy Joe Singleton, Gassaway, three grandsons, Jeffrey Clayton, Darren Clayton and Ryan Currey; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Earl Singleton.

Mr. Singleton drove a tractor trailer for 35 years and was a member of the Teamsters Union. Hye was also the owner of Miller's Restaurant in Hepzibah. He was a member of several organizations including the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Moose Lodge and the American Legion. He was Baptist.

Friends will be received from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. today at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Shinnston Masonic Cemetery. Military services will be accorded at the cemetery.

 

Zelma L. West

BUCKHANNON -- Zelma L. West, 78, of 34 Hinkle Drive died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at Sharon Regional Health Systems. She was born Sept. 28, 1919, in Upshur County, a daughter of the late Clyde Toms and Leota Phillips Toms. Her husband, Hayward West, whom she married in 1941, preceeded her in death in 1995.

Surviving are three daughters, Judith Wine miller, West Middlesex, Pa., Brenda J. Cook, Angier, N. C., and Darlene Hedrick, Buchannon; one son, Randall M. West, Jane Lew, five granddaughters, Melody Winemiller and Jennifer Winemiller, both of West Middlesex, Angela Hedrick and Vanessa Hedrick, both of Buckhannon, and Kayla West, Jane Lew, and one grandson, Gerald Winemiller, West Middlesex.

She was also preceded in death by one brother and sister.

Mrs. West was a homemaker and attended Buchannon Wesleyan Methodist Church.
