Harold J. Armstrong

Harold Junior Armstrong, 70, of 107 Shuttlesworth St., Clarksburg, died at 5 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, in United Hospital Center.

He was born in Clarksburg, Feb. 1, 1928, a son of the late Harold Russell Armstrong and Edith Eugene Wade Armstrong.

His wife, Martha May Bryant Armstrong, whom he married Oct. 31, 1971, survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Shirley Ann Cart, Barboursville; one son and daughter-in-law, Charles Kelis and Donna Smith, Proctorville, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Kimberly, Kevin and Kenneth Cart, Kristina Black, Amanda, Tristi, April, Cassandra and Marcus Smith, and two great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by one grandson, Charles David Smith.

Mr. Armstrong was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene. He had been employed by Bankers Life and Casualty Insurance Company for over 30 years.

Friends will be received from 5-8 p.m. today at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St., Clarksburg. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the First Church of the Nazarene, Route 58, with the Rev. Richard L. Chambers officiating. His body will lie in state in the church for one hour preceding the service. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.

Algie L. Bailey

FAIRMONT -- Algie Luetta Reed Bailey, 77, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at Fairmont General Hospital.

She was born Jan. 12, 1921, at Beech Lick, Doddridge County, a daughter of the late Okey Frank and Mary Jane Nicholson Reed.

Her husband, Orvil Bailey, whom she married Oct. 30, 1939 in Harrisonburg, Va., preceded her in death in 1989.

Surviving is one son Robert Kent "Bobby¨ Bailey, at home.

She was preceded in death by one son, Marvin Kay Bailey, in 1956.

Eva E. Black

MURRYSVILLE, Pa. -- Eva Elaine Black, 75, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, in HealthSouth, Monroeville.

She was born Sept. 6, 1923, in Clarksburg, a daughter of the late Milo and Reta Rinehart McIntyre.

Her husband, Lynn L. Black, preceded her in death in 1992.

Surviving are one son, Keith Griffith and his wife, Brenda, and three grandchildren, Matthew, Melissa and Amanda.

Mrs. Black was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Murrysville, the Murrysville Senior Citizens and the American Association of Retired Persons Roundtop Chapter.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at John T. Hart Funeral Home in Murrysville. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. William Mock officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Friendship Cemetery in Berlin.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Murrysville.

Gladys E. Bruno

ROWLESBURG -- Gladys Edna Bruno, 70, of Rowlesburg, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, in Morgantown.

She was born Feb. 9, 1928, in Philadelphia, Pa., a daughter of the late William and Charlotte Braithwood Hasenpflug.

Her husband of 49 years, Frank J. Bruno Sr., survives.

Also surviving are one son, Frank J. Bruno Jr., Rowlesburg; two daughters and spouses, Carolyn and Richard May, Pasadena, Texas, and Holly and Allen McKinley, Bridgeport; her twin sister and spouse, Ruth and Earl Duncan, Trevose, Pa.; four grandchildren, Sherri L. Nice, whom she reared, Martinsburg, Angela May, Pasadena, and Shawn and April McKinley, Bridgeport.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, William Hasenpflug and one granddaughter, Frankie Jo Bruno.

Mrs. Bruno was a member of the Catholic Church and treasurer for the Altar Society. She was a civic volunteer, serving as a poll commissioner, a Girl Scout leader and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Rowlesburg. She was a Rowlesburg Park supervisor and a Sunday school teacher.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Burke Chapel, Chestnut Street, Rowlesburg. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Terra Alta Cemetery.

Guy G. Dean

JANE LEW -- Guy Garl Dean, 81, of Route 2, Box 369, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, in Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center, Clarksburg.

He was born Aug. 26, 1917, in Napier, Braxton County, a son of the late Thomas Wesley and Iva Fox Dean.

His wife, the former Dorothy Gregory, survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Garry Garl Dean, Baltimore, Md., and Larry James Dean, Conway, S.C.; two daughters, Janice Lou Dean, Baltimore, and Phyllis Jean Casey, Jacksonville, N.C.; three sisters, Williceane Lipps, Route 3, Weston, Bessie Mick, Lost Creek, and Glenola Crislip, Camden on Gauley; seven grandchildren, Sarah Dean, Katie Dean and Vallerie Dean, all of Baltimore, James Kelly Dean and Wendy Dean, Conway, Michael Casey Jr., Chapel Hill, N.C., and Kimberly Casey, Jacksonville.

He was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Mr. Dean was a retired steel mill inspector at Sparrow Point, Md. He was a World War II Navy veteran and was Protestant.

Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. today at Morris Funeral Home in Jane Lew. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Leon H. Hevener officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

Jack C. Demastus

Jack Corbett Demastus, 76, of Junkins Avenue, Clarksburg, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, at United Hospital Center following an extended illness.

He was born Nov. 30, 1922, in Clarksburg, a son of the late King and Rose Pearl Sutton Demastus.

Surviving are one son, Corbett Eugene Demastus and wife, Nancy Ann, Barberton, Ohio; six grandchildren, James, Debbie, Steven, Cynthia, Stephanie and Kristy; 12 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Fred S. Demastus, Palm Bay, Fla., John J. Demastus, Atwater, Ohio, Robert G. Demastus, Akron, Ohio, and Lawrence L. Demastus, Pinehurst, N.C.; two sisters, Vivian Hodge and Frances Insani, both of Clarksburg, and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Demastus retired from Ford Motor Company, Bedford, Ohio, where he was a union representative for several years.

He was a World War II U.S. Marine Corps veteran and worked for the Department of Highways. He was a member of the Meuse-Argonne Post No. 573, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at Davis Funeral Home, Clarksburg Chapel, 443 W. Pike St. in Clarksburg. The funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Jim Kelly officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Masonic Cemetery.

Rev. Wilson Harvey

KEYSER -- Rev. Wilson Ward Harvey, 89, of 107 Orchard St., died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.

He was born Aug. 18, 1909, in Hubbard, Md., a son of the late C. Guy Harvey and Dessa Callis Harvey.

Surviving is his wife of 57 years, Bonnie Newcome Harvey.

Also surviving are one son, John C. Harvey, Keyser; one daughter, Sarah Susan Haggerty and husband Dr. Ronald J. Haggerty, Fort Ashby; one brother, S. Ross Harvey, Clarksburg; one sister, Mary Selders, Russell, Ky.; two grandchildren, Chris Haggerty, Charleston, and Gail Haggerty, Washington, D.C., and szeveral nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Rembold.

Rev. Harvey was a graduate of Aurora High School in Preston County, Potomac State College, Asbury College, West Virginia Wesleyan College and Garrett Theological Seminary.

He had been a member of the West Virginia Conference of what is now the United Methodist for 65 years. He served charges at Blueville-Grafton, Wesley Foundation West Virginia University, Fairmont, Ripley, Rowlesburg, Parkersburg, and New Martinsville before coming to First United Methodist Church, Keyser, where he served from 1961-74 and as pastor emeritus. Prior to his ministry, he taught school in Preston County.

During World War II, he was a U.S. Army Air Force chaplain stationed in North Carolina and Texas with the Technical Training Command. He was a life-time member of the American Legion and had served as West Virginia State Legion chaplain and past commander of Boyce Houser Post 41 American Legion, Keyser.

Rev. Harvey was involved in bringing the Heartland Nursing Home program to Keyser. He was a past president and lieutenant governor of Keyser Evening Kiwanis. In 1980, he was named citizen of the year.

An avid family history scholar, he prepared several books on his genealogy, and he had belonged to the Sons of the American Revolution. He was a charter member of the Mineral County Historical Society, which granted him the Order of Crozet honor. He was also a member of the Garrett County Historical Society.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Keyser, Davis Lodge 51 AF&AM, Scottish Rite, Wheeling, Osiris Shrine Temple, Wheeling, Upper Potomac Shrine Club, Keyser, Dowell Commandry 028, Knight Templars, and Royal Arch Masons.

Charles L. Ivady

Charles L. Ivady, 88, of 53 Watkins Lane, Clarksburg, died at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 1, 1909, in Clarksburg, a son of the late Steve Ivady and Elizabeth Lucas Ivady.

His wife, Julia Mary Kosnick Ivady, whom he married Aug. 18, 1945, preceded him in death on Dec. 7, 1997.

Surviving are one half brother, Laszlo Ivady, Hungary; five nephews, Michael W. Lucas Jr., John Paul Lucas and Michael G. Lucas, all of Clarksburg, Steve and Norman Ivady, both of Weirton; two nieces, Bernice Jean Lucas, Clarksburg, and Barbara Logue, Pittsburgh, Pa., and several great- nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Steve Ivady; one sister, Barbara Ivady; three half brothers, Michael W. Lucas Sr., Mickey Lucas and John Paul Lcuas and two half sisters, Elizabeth Sandor and infant Helen Ivady.

Mr. Ivady was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and was a member of the Harrison County Senior Citizens and the William Penn Association.

He was employed for 10 years in a tin mill and then was employed at Strand Billards.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St. in Clarksburg. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. John McDonough as celebrant. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.

A scriptural prayer service will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Calvin L. Jarvis

GLENVILLE -- Calvin L. Jarvis, 48, of Lower Level Run, Cedarville, died at 10:47 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, Weston, following an extended illness.

He was born April 25, 1950, in Calhoun County, a son of Lonzo Jarvis, Maryland, and the late Dora Jean Green Jarvis.

Surviving are three brothers, Rex Moore, West Virginia, Ray Moore, Ohio, and Frank Kimble, Glenville; five sisters, Arlene Fisher and Ilene Pyles, both of Normantown, Dorothy Fisher, Cedarville, Olive Utt, Shinnston, and Barbara Duncan, Weston.

Mr. Jarvis was a laborer and a member of the Upper Steer Run Baptist Church.

Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. today at Ellyson Mortuary Inc. in Glenville. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Elder Larry Fisher officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Normantown.

Edward Jolley Sr.

WEST UNION -- Edward E. Jolley Sr., 72, of Route 2, West Union, Riggins Run community, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, at his residence from injuries sustained in a farming accident.

He was born in Terre Haute, Ind., Oct. 30, 1925, a son of the late Orin Jolley.

Surviving are five daughters, Deborah Temple and Crystal Oliver, both of Winnsboro, La., Kim Godfrey, Seven Valleys, Pa., Linda Gentzler, Dover, Pa., and Jodi Kemper, York Haven, Pa.; three sons, Edward E. Jolley Jr., York, Pa., Gregory Jolley, Enterprise, and Keith Jolley, York Haven, and 25 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Jolley was a veteran of World War II, where he received the Purple Heart. He was retired from the Operating Engineers of Norristown, Pa. Local No. 542.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association, the Salem Veterans of Foreign Wars Sperry Robinson Post, and was an avid farmer and hunter. He was Lutheran.

Luther J.H. Lucas

SHINNSTON -- Luther James Henry Lucas, 64, of Route 2, Mannington, died suddenly Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at his residence.

He was born March 12, 1934, at Long Run, a son of the late Gerald Leslie and Catherine Marie Heldreth Lucas.

His wife, Delcia Watson Lucas, preceded him in death on Aug. 29, 1994.

Surviving are two sons, James Leslie Lucas, Route 2, Mannington, and John Jeffrey Lucas, Martinsburg; three daughters, Tammy Lucas, Route 2, Mannington, Mrs. Richard (Kimberly) Daft, Farmington, and Michelle Lucas, Rivesville; two stepsons, Darwin Watson, Shinnston, and Del Watson, Mannington; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Alan (Debbie) McIntyre, Route 2, Mannington; three sisters, Waneta June Harris and Delores Rosalie Parrish, both of Fairview, and Sharon Sue Fetty, Joetown; two brothers, Gerald Franklin Lucas, Shinnston, and Raymond Marlin Lucas, Four States; 16 grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Lucas was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a coal miner, having last worked for Consolidation Coal Co., Robinson Run No. 95 Mine, Oakdale Portal. He retired with 28 years in the mining industry.

He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America, Local 1501, Shinnston, and the American Legion Post 31.

The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. today at the Dorsey Funeral Home in Shinnston. Interment followed in Fortney Cemetery at Williams Mines.

C.J. McKenna Jr.

WESTON -- Charles J. "Jim" McKenna Jr., 81, of 652 Locust Ave., Weston, died at 9:55 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, at his residence following an extended illness.

He was born Aug. 2, 1917, in Marion County, a son of the late Charles McKenna Sr. and Irene Hendrickson McKenna.

He was the last surviving member of his immediatel family, having been also preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Johnson.

Mr. McKenna was a steel mill worker before going into business for himself as a painter and decorator. He was a Methodist, and was a charter endowment member of the National Rifle Association.

Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. today at the Floyd Funeral Home, 402 Main Ave. in Weston. There will be no funeral service. At the request of the deceased, his body will be cremated. Graveside memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Weston with the Rev. Clyde Gidley officiating. Interment of the ashes will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Beulah Pritchard

HURRICANE -- Beulah Fittro Pritchard, 87, of South Charleston, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, in Country Villa Nursing Home, Buffalo, following an extended illness.

Surviving is one sister, Marguerite Fittro Bingman, Clarksburg.

Ms. Pritchard was a retired secretary for Union Carbide with more than 20 years of service. She attended Living Word Christian Center in Charleston.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Plant Cemetery in Sardis.

Hilbert Rader

BUCKHANNON -- Hilbert Rader, 83, of Bay Village, Ohio, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio.

He was the son of the late Scott Rader and Tressa Daugherty Rader.

His wife, Gizella Leslie Rader, whom he married July 10, 1956, preceded him in death.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Claude Rader.

Mr. Rader was a graduate of Walkers High School and Tri State College of Angola, Ind. He was a veteran of World War II and was Methodist.

Bernice A. Raffath

Bernice A. Coberly Raffath, 84, formerly of 307 Broadway Ave., Clarksburg, died Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, at United Hospital Center following an extended illness.

She was born in Weston, Feb. 4, 1914, a daughter of the late Abner Otis Coberly and Delphia Turner Coberly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo F. Raffath, in March of 1978.

Surviving are one brother, William R. Coberly, Clarksburg, and one sister, Juanita Post, Clarksburg.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Washburn and Beulah Richards, and three brothers, Roy Coberly, Robert Coberly and Carl Coberly.

Mrs. Raffath was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Stonewood, Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, American Association of Retired Persons, Golden Agers, Harrison County Senior Citizens, Ceramic Club, and Looking Forward Homemakers Club.

She was a salesperson for May Company in Lorain, Ohio, for 25 years.

Friends will be received from 3-9 p.m. today at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St. in Clarksburg. Catholic burial rites will be celebrated at noon Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Father Edward Sabo, T.O.R., officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

Smith Shroyer Sr.

GRAFTON -- Smith Hart Shroyer Sr., 90, of 1118 Pike St., formerly of Route 1, Knottsville community, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, in Grafton City Hospital.

He was born June 18, 1908, in Grafton, a son of the late John Rector Shroyer and Fannie Squires Shroyer.

His first wife, Flossie Faye Lundy Shroyer, preceded him in death. His second wife, Mary Duckworth Shroyer, survives in Grafton.

Surviving are four sons and their spouses, James Richard Shroyer and wife, Annabelle Shroyer, Clearwater, Fla., Smith Hart Shroyer Jr. and wife, Sylvia Ruth Shroyer, Arlington Heights, Ill., Curtis Eugene Shroyer and wife, Suzanne Shroyer and Paul D. Shroyer and wife, Sue Shroyer, all of Grafton; five grandsons, three granddaughters and several great-grandchildren.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having also been preceded in death by one sister, Pearl Shroyer.

Mr. Shroyer was formerly employed by Musgrove's Wholesale Company, Grafton, and retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways.

He was a member of the Knottsville United Methodist Church and was affiliated with the Taylor County Senior Citizens.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at Donald G. Ford Funeral Home, Route 50 west, Grafton. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Arden R. Beck officiating. Interment will follow in Knottsville Cemetery.

 

Charles S. Sprigg

BUCKHANNON -- Charles Samuel Sprigg, 75, of Akron, Ohio, formerly of Ireland, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, in Akron.

He was born Dec. 16, 1922, in Ireland, a son of the late John George Sprigg and Maude Elizabeth Marple Sprigg.

Surviving are two daughters, Franceen Brown, New York, and Margaret Jean Saj, South Carolina; one son, Charles S. Sprigg Jr., New York; one brother, John G. Sprigg, Ohio; one sister, Mary Lee Cross, Ohio, and eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Sprigg was a member of Iron Workers Local No. 17 of Cleveland, Ohio. He served with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II and was stationed for three years in the Pacific Theatre Operations.

He retired as an iron worker for the American Bridge Company.

Harriet V. Sutton

JANE LEW -- Harriet Virginia Sutton, 74, of Heartland of Clarksburg, formerly of Lost Creek, died at 3:35 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998.

She was born April 26, 1924, in Harrison County, a daughter of the late Ervin Davis and Laura Knicley Davis.

Her husband, Harold Sutton, preceded her in death in 1978.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Ernest Dale and Sharon Sutton, Nutter Fort, and Ervin Walter and Margaret Sutton, Route 2, Jane Lew; one sister, Lillian Smith, Bridgeport; four grandchildren, Christopher Sutton, Burlington, N.C., Michelle Smith, Durham, N.C., Heather Scheuvront, Stonewood, and Bradley Sutton, Nutter Fort, and one great-grandson.

She was also preceded in death by one sister, Mary Gifford and four brothers, Riley, Adrian, Hiram and Carl Davis.

Mrs. Sutton graduated from Bridgeport High School. She was a member of Lost Creek Seventh Day Baptist Church and attended Broad Run Baptist Church.

Friends will be received from 5-8 p.m. today at the Morris Funeral Home in Jane Lew. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Joseph Bush officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery at Berea.
