Lillian L. Butcher

WESTON -- Lillian Louise John "Tillie Lou" Butcher, 59, of 409 Center Ave., died at 10:40 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.

She was born Jan. 9, 1939, in Weston, a daughter of the late James Hugh John and Adrienne Smith John.

On May 2, 1959, she married Larry Joe Butcher, who preceded her in death on Dec. 24, 1996.

Surviving are four daughters, Carla Johanna Lennox, Virginia Beach, Va., Paula Margaret Messersmith, Jacksonville, Fla., Lela Ann Wilkinson, Jane Lew, and Tesla Adrienne Westfall, Greensboro, N.C.; three sons, Bruce H. Butcher and Samuel J. Butcher, both of Jane Lew, and James Otis Butcher, Weston; 13 grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one granddaughter, Sarah Jolene Butcher.

Mrs. Butcher was a homemaker. She was a lifelong member of the St. Paul Episcopal Church in Weston.

Friends will be received from 6-9 p.m. today at the Boyle Funeral Home, 322 Main Ave. in Weston. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Father James Murphy officiating. Interment will follow in the Machpelah Cemetery.

Elizabeth K. Deem

BRIDGEPORT -- Elizabeth Kay Deem, 41, of 211 Gordon St., died Tuesday morning, Sept. 15, 1998, at her residence following an extended illness.

She was born May 4, 1957, in Clarksburg, a daughter of Elsie Pharis Browning, Bridgeport, with whom she and her husband made their home, and the late Charley Browning.

Her husband, William J. Deem, survives.

Also surviving are two brothers, Edgar Browning, Orlando, Fla., and Carol Browning, Bridgeport; and one sister, Carolyn Browning, Bridgeport.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, George Browning.

Mrs. Deem attended the Bridgeport Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Bridgeport High School.

Arrangements are incomplete at the Allen Funeral Home in Bridgeport.

Violet N. Humphreys

PHILIPPI -- Violet N. Humphreys, 77, a resident of the Lida Clark Personal Care Home, Clarksburg, died at 4:25 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at the home following an extended illness.

She was born Feb. 15, 1921, in Philippi, a daughter of the late Alvin and Audra Bess Nestor Stemple.

On Oct. 19, 1941, she married Horace H. Humphreys, who preceded her in death on Jan. 29, 1997.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas A. and Donna Humphreys, Bridgeport; one granddaughter, Miss Stacey Michelle Humphreys, and one grandson, Christopher Thomas Humphreys, both of Bridgeport.

Mrs. Humphreys was retired from the Union National Bank at Clarksburg, where her duties included that of note teller. She was a member of the Cross Roads United Methodist Church.

Mary T. Leonard

MARIETTA, Ga. -- Mary Theresa "Terri" Leonard, 69, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998.

She was the daughter of the late JoAnn and Thomas Retton.

Surviving are three sons, Robert Leonard and Craig Leonard, both of Marietta, and Tommy Leonard, Dallas; one daughter, Sherry Stacy, Marietta; three brothers, Anthony Retton, Eugene, Ore., Joseph Retton, Niagara Falls, N.Y., and Frank Retton, Fairmont, W.Va.; three sisters, Helen Marchiny, Millville, N.J., Anna Schirripa, Shinnston, W.Va., and Rosalee Carter, Clarksburg, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A native of Monongah, W.Va., she moved to Marietta in 1968.

Mrs. Leonard was a retired voucher examiner with the Department of Defense and had served as a corporal in the U.S. Air Force. She was Catholic.

Nancy R. Moore

SHINNSTON -- Nancy Ruth Moore, 63, of Meadowbrook, died at 6:25 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg, following an extended illness.

She was born April 21, 1935, on Lamberts Run, a daughter of the late Cecil Reed and Oma Blanche Layfield Reed Crayton.

Surviving is her husband, Junior H. Moore, whom she married Oct. 2, 1965.

Also surviving are two sons, Junior R. "Pete" Moore and Roger D. Moore, both of Meadowbrook; two daughters, Debbie Dunn and Oma Moore, both of Meadowbrook; one brother, Charles David Reed, East View; six sisters, Mary Gowans, Sylvia Baker, Goldie Riffle, Dora Lee Riffle and Evelyn Gillis, all of Meadowbrook, and Mrs. Kenneth (Lydia "Sis") Burroughs, Jane Lew; three grandchildren, Amos Dunn, whom she reared, Casey and Cheyenne Moore; several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by one sister, Beryl Reed, and her stepfather, James Crayton.

Mrs. Moore was a homemaker and Pentecostal.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Dorsey Funeral Home in Shinnston. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday with the Rev. Patty Post officiating. Interment will follow in the Shinnston Masonic Cemetery.

Viola P. Moore

Viola Pearl Grubb Moore, 97, a resident of Clarksburg Continuous Care Center, died at 6:10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, in the center.

She was born in Johnstown, Pa., Jan. 28, 1901, a daughter of the late D.J. Grubb and Mary Hoffelter Grubb.

Her husband, George Clair Moore, preceded her in death on Aug. 3, 1973.

Surviving are two grandchildren, David Eugene Ridenour, Lumberport, and Susan Ridenour Payne, Warrenton, Va.; three great-grandchildren, Robert Eugene Ridenour and David William Ridenour, both of Lumberport, and Brandon Hamilton Payne, Warrenton; several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Martha Ridenour Nath; two brothers, Rudolph and Dan Grubb; five sisters, Lorena Grubb, Emma Boden, Mary Wilson, Rhonwin Chase and Elizabeth Grubb.

Mrs. Moore was a member of the Stealey Heights United Methodist Church where in earlier years she had been an active worker.

Friends will be received from 10 until 11 a.m. on Thursday, the funeral hour, at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 E. Main St. in Clarksburg. The Rev. Susan Rector will officiate. Interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery.

Etta L. Roe

GLENVILLE -- Etta L. Roe, 93, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at Sunrise Care and Rehabilitation Center of Glenville following an extended illness.

She was born Jan. 22, 1905, at Cedarville, Gilmer County, a daughter of the late A.O. and Dora Townsend Rutherford.

In 1951, she married Herbert I. Roe, who preceded her in death in 1967.

Surviving are two stepsons, Sherman Roe, Biggerville, Pa., and Walter Poe, St. Maries, Idaho; three stepdaughters, Erma Taylor, Bridgeport, Zota Benner, Akron, Ohio, and Eleanor Frame, Clarksburg; one half sister, Eula Thompson, Tunkhannock, Pa.; five stepgrandchildren and several stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one sister, two half brothers and one half sister.

Mrs. Roe was a retired health care aide in Sand Point, Idaho. She was a member of the Gilmer County Senior Citizens and was Baptist.

Bessie L. Sites

BUCKHANNON -- Bessie L. Sites, 88, of 16801 Boothill Road, Accokeek, Md., died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at the home of her brother in Accokeek.

She was born June 12, 1910, in Webster Springs, a daughter of the late Amos Currence Gregory and Clementine Baughman Gregory.

Her husband, Daniel William Sites, preceded her in death in 1978.

Surviving are one daughter, Carolyn Milligan, Denville, N.J.; two sons, John W. Sites, Accokeek, and Charles L. Sites, Hernando, Fla.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Emma Wright, Winter Park, Fla.; one brother, Allen Gregory, Orlando, Fla.; three stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one sister, two brothers and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Sites was a nurses aide. She was a member of the Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church, the Women's Club of Mt. Tabor and the Denville Senior Citizens.

James H. Stalnaker

ELKINS -- James H. Stalnaker, 60, a resident of East Dailey, died at 3:35 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, at Davis Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.

He was born July 14, 1938, in Sutton, a son of the late William Fredrick and Lida King Stalnaker.

On Nov. 7, 1992, he married the former Glendine Taylor, who survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Steven Stalnaker and Robert Stalnaker, both of Wilmington, N.C., and Michael Stalnaker, Beverly; two stepsons, Clinton and Jeffrey Bennett, both at home; two daughters, Cheryl Schroeder, Coalton, and Tawnya Gum, East Dailey; two brothers, Walter Stalnaker, Buckhannon, and George Stalnaker, Youngstown, Ohio; three sisters, Shirley Porter, Youngstown, Jean Strader, Burnsville, and Vickie Hill, Clarksburg; three grandchildren and five stepgrandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.

Mr. Stalnaker attended the schools of Braxton County and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was employed as a coal miner for many years, having retired from Bethlehem Steel Corp. in 1994.

He was a member of United Mine Workers of America Local 4172 where he served as local president and was a member of the Memorial Mission Church at Mill Creek.

Della B. Tenney

BUCKHANNON -- Della B. Tenney, 81, died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at Courtland Acres Nursing Home, Thomas.

She was born March 17, 1917, in Hacker Valley, a daughter of the late Ballard Lee ''Bud'' Anderson and Leola Cogar Anderson.

She was twice married, first on July 24, 1937, to George Duffy Marsh, who preceded her in death on Jan. 18, 1948. On July 4, 1956, she married Garcie Cecil Tenney, who preceded her in death on Nov. 5, 1980.

Surviving are two sons, Claude Marsh, Toneytown, Md., and Clyde Marsh, Fairfield, Pa.; six daughters, Helen Thomas, Westminster, Md., Hazel Maloney, Fayetteville, N.C., Linda Paugh, Thomas, Shirley Buckley, Hampstead, Md., Loretta Jo Lucas, Belpre, Ohio, and Brenda Wyatt, Buckhannon; 22 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leo Anderson, Linn, and Millard Anderson, Montrose; five sisters, Malinda Mace, Ravenswood, Olive Wood, Keyser, Iva Canfield, Missouri, Vina Norman, Frazeysburg, Ohio, and Margie Hissam, North Carolina; several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Hugh Anderson; one sister, Stella Steward; one daughter, Tuana Gail Tenney, and one stepsister, Bessie Gillespie.

Mrs. Tenney was a member of the Faith Tabernacle of Buckhannon. She retired after 10 years of service from Black & Decker of Hampstead, Md.

Shirley N. Wathey

Shirley Naomi Claypool Skidmore Wathey, 62, of 99-1/2 Fourth St., Stonewood, died at 7:40 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at her residence.

She was born in Anmoore, Jan. 6, 1936, a daughter of the late John W. "Bill" Claypool and Hazel Bell Amos Menear Claypool.

Her husband, Daniel B. Wathey, preceded her in death.

Surviving are three sons, Joseph W. Skidmore, Lost Creek, Steven Lee Skidmore, Stonewood, and Jeffrey Wayne Skidmore, East Liverpool, Ohio; one daughter, Kathy L. Skidmore Wilson, and two stepdaughters, Janna Wathey Cabele and Patricia Wathey Barnes Holden, all of East Liverpool; eight brothers, Robert, Ernest and Dorsey Claypool, all of Stonewood, Charles ''Pete'' Claypool, Philippi, Ronald Claypool, Reynoldsville, the Rev. James Claypool, Enterprise, Donald and Carroll Menear, both of East Liverpool; five sisters, Louella Claypool Baker and Sharon Menear, both of East Liverpool, Mary Chandler, Philippi, Mrs. Frank (Patty) Bassel, Stonewood, and Mrs. George (Joyce) Cross, Belington; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, John W. Wathey and Daniel B. Wathey Jr., and two brothers, John R. Claypool and Darrell W. "Billy" Claypool.

Mrs. Wathey had attended the Camp Ground Community Church in East Liverpool.

Friends may call at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St., Clarksburg, where a funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Benjamin Floyd Samms will officiate. Interment service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Columbiana Memorial Park Cemetery in East Liverpool.
