(May 27) Lance Woodford tossed a two-hitter, while Gilmer County banged out 10 hits, to beat Notre Dame 11-1 in five innings to win the Class A Region II, Section 1 championship Friday night at Frank Loria Memorial Field.

The Irish (24-10) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Jeremy Wright singled and went to second on an error. Zack Carpenter followed with a single to left to put runners on first and third.

Wright then scored on a double steal for Notre Dame's only run.

Woodford was untouchable after the first inning. He retired the final 13 batters, striking out five, to beat Notre Dame for the second time in the tournament and third time this year.

"That is the first time Lance has pitched on two days rest," Gilmer County coach David Jaffre said.

"He really did a great job for us against an excellent Notre Dame team."

"(Woodford) pitched very well and I guess he has got our number," Notre Dame coach Mark Starkey said.

Jaffre also liked the way his team responded after a tough 6-5 loss to Notre Dame on Thursday.

"I was really proud of the intensity and aggressiveness we brought to the game," Jaffre said.

"I thought the key to the win was the aggressiveness on the base paths and a lot of those runs were produced on the bases," Jaffre said.

The Titans (22-4) had the bats rolling from the start of the game with eight hits over the first two innings against Notre Dame starter Jeremy Wright.

"Jeremy just didn't have it today and our pitchers arms were very tired," Starkey said.

"But, I can't take anything away from Gilmer County," Starkey said.

"They hit the ball hard, put the ball in play and beat us," he said.

Jeremiah Phares and Joey Frashure led the Titans' 10-hit attack with two hits apiece.

The Titans now advance on to the Class A Region II semifinal game against Franklin on Tuesday evening at Buckhannon-Upshur High School.

The game is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.

Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
