Freshmen Lead Cougars past Tyler, 73-55
By CHARLES CASEY
SHINNSTON _ Lincoln used some outstanding play from its freshmen to easily down Tyler Consolidated by a 73-55 count in girls high school basketball action Friday night at LHS.
The Class AA No. 7 Cougars, who are now 11-1 on the season, received huge games from Teresa Medina, Tabitha Hutson and Jessica Morris.
Medina had probably her finest game of the season with a game-high 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the floor and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Hutson had a solid all-around performance with 16 points, seven rebounds, dished out a game-high nine assists and blocked five shots.
Morris, who was making her first start in the Lincoln lineup, responded with seven points and five rebounds.
"It seems like someone else is stepping up for us," said Lincoln coach Jeff Osbourn about his three freshmen players. "Tonight, it was (Teresa) Medina and (Tabitha) Hutson and I thought Jessica Morris played a fine game in her first start.
"Teresa was just getting out in the lanes on the break and Tabitha just had a super floor game. That's the way it has been for us all year and you just can't shut down one component of our team."
Medina started off on fire with eight first period points, but it was a Morris driving layup that gave the Cougars a slim one-point, 14-13, advantage after one quarter.
The Knights (2-11) got going in the second canto behind five points from Erin Pierpoint to take a 20-16 lead with 5:28 showing on the clock.
However, Lincoln responded as Chrissy Luchuck fired in two of her three 3-pointers in the period to give the hosts a 34-29 margin at the break.
It was Hutson's turn to take over the game for Lincoln in the third period. She scored its first eight points and assisted on four other hoops as the Cougars opened up a nine-point, 54-45, spread heading into the final period.
TCHS had cut the deficit to eight, 57-49, when the Cougars put the game out of reach with a 10-0 run. Medina scored four points and Hutson assisted on three baskets during the decisive run.
Luchuck finished out the Cougars double-digit scorers with 14 points, which included four treys.
Pierpoint paced the Knights with 21 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. Jessica Dotson followed with 14 points.

By MIKE NUTTER
Grafton used a scrappy defense and a strong inside game to down Liberty 54-32 Friday night at Libety High School in Big 10 girls basketball action.
With the score knotted up at 6-6 in the first quarter, the Bearcats utilized their 2-2-1 full court press to force the Mountaineers into many miscues including Shilo Villaraza's steal and lay-up to give Grafton its first lead of the night at 8-6.
A Villaraza free throw gave the visitors an 11-6 lead and Grafton went on to take a 14-9 lead after one quarter of play.
The Bearcats then went to guard Jodi Bias for their offense. She started the second canto with an outside jumper and followed that with a 3-pointer for five of her game-high 15 points, to stake Grafton to a 19-9 lead early in the period.
GHS kept its offense rolling and kept Liberty from getting into any offensive flow with its aggressive defense and built a 20-point lead at 34-14 on Shannon Maier's inside hoop with 3:20 remaining before halftime.
"I thought the press changed the momentum of the game," said Grafton head coach Rich Bord. "I think not only that we hurt them on the boards but that allowed us to get into our transition game.
"But Liberty is a very young team and they're getting better."
The defensive pressure didn't stop, as the Bearcats limited LHS to only one field goal in the third period and helped give GHS a comfortable 48-20 lead going into the fourth quarter.
"There is no doubt that their defense set the tone for the ball game," commented LHS head coach Gary Courtney. "We are just so young that we make a lot of mistakes and it's going to be a maturity thing for us."
With game in hand, both teams went to their reserves in the final quarter before Grafton came away with the win.
Following Bias for the Bearcats (4-6, 3-3) in scoring was Misty Bolyard with 10, while Liberty (0-13, 0-10) was led by Julie Bee's 6 points.
Both squads go on the road for their next contests, with the Mountaineers traveling to Lincoln on Wednesday and Grafton taking on Philip Barbour on Monday.
