    Powerful Inside Game Carries
    Bridgeport past Liberty, 70-22

Bridgeport used a powerful inside game to come away with an easy 70-22 victory over Liberty in a Harrison County and Big 10 Conference girls high school basketball contest Wednesday night at the LHS gymnasium.

The Indians, who stand at 2-1 on the season, kept feeding the ball in the post all evening long to Peggy Scott, Beth Guzzi and Katy Wilson. All three players gained double-figure status as the Mountaineers did very little to defend them on the lower block.

Scott finished as the game's leading scorer with 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Guzzi followed with 13 points and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, while Wilson added 10 markers.

"Compared to the first two games, we didn't do very well in the first half," said Bridgeport coach Dave Marshall. "We have a team goal to feed the post 20 times and I don't think we did it as many times as we liked to.

"We have four pretty good post players and we like to get the ball in their hands as much as possible. I thought we played a complete game for 32 minutes and we haven't done that in the first two games."

Kristen Queen also netted double digits for BHS with 11 points. Jackie Codling had nine points and dished off for a game-high eight assists.

Another factor that contributed to the Indians win was the poor performance from an offensive standpoint by Liberty. The Mountaineers committed 21 first half turnovers and ended the contest with a total of 30.

"I thought we would improve after the Philip Barbour game," remarked Liberty coach Gary Courtney. "We are still making the same exact mistakes that we made at Philip Barbour and, obviously, something has to change in the near future."

Jamie Robinson paced the Mountaineers (0-2) with 10 points.

    Pressure Defense Lifts Lincoln
    To 65-29 Victory over Preston

SHINNSTON _ Lincoln used a pressure 1-3-1 defense to jump out to a big lead early in the first quarter and cruised to a 65-29 victory over Preston last night in girls Big 10 basketball action.

The Cougars' defense helped the hosts take a 15-0 lead with 3:01 to go in the first quarter before the visitors got on the scoreboard.

Then the teams played evenly for the rest of the canto as the Knights cut the lead to 21-7 with the final two baskets of the period.

Freshman Tabitha Hutson and senior Stacey Lambert paced LHS in the quarter with eight and six points, respectively.

The Cougars continued to pressure the ball in the second canto as they built their advantage to 28 points, 41-13, on a 16-0 run to end the half.

Chrissy Luchuck led the Lincoln defense in the quarter as the senior applied pressure on the ball and had six of her game-high 13 steals along with four points. Hutson chipped in six points in the period for the Cougars.

"Well, the first half was the key for us," said Lincoln coach Jeff Osbourn. "Our pressure defense ... Chrissy Luchuck had 13 steals in the game. Anytime you have one player get that many steals in a game, you are giving the other team trouble."

Lincoln continued its run in the third quarter as it scored the first six points of the period and built the lead to as much as 39 before Osbourn substituted freely for the final two minutes and the final quarter.

Luchuck led the Cougars with 10 points in the period including two 3-pointers while S. Lambert added six markers.

"In second half, we got to play a lot of kids," said Osbourn. "We have a lot of depth which we are thankful for. Our conditioning is paying off and we are playing real well."

    S. Lambert led all scorers with 17 points for the Cougars (3-0) while Luchuck followed with 16. Hutson finished the night with 13 markers, seven rebounds and three assists.

Mindi Sypolt led PHS (1-2) with seven points.

Lincoln will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to North Marion in an inter-county contest.

    Lincoln Hosts
    Preston; Liberty
    Visits Bridgeport

A Big 10 Conference matchup and an intra-Harrison County battle between rivals highlight tonight's girls basketball schedule.

Upstart Lincoln (2-0) hosts Preston (1-1) in a game that features two of the early season favorites in the Big 10.

The Cougars have rolled past their first two opponents behind the stellar play of senior Chrissy Luchuck and freshmen Tabitha Hutson and Teresa Medina.

Luchuck and Hutson form a tenacious backcourt duo while Medina is a threat from her forward spot.

But, the Cougars may not be at full strength tonight, according to coach Jeff Osbourn.

"We're fighting the flu," said the veteran mentor. "(Monday) night we had six girls out of practice. They were back (Tuesday), but they were hacking and coughing. It's still a problem."

Fortunately the Cougars have plenty of depth.

"We'll have to play a lot of people, but we've got a lot of girls ready to step up," said Osbourn. "We've been playing a lot of people and they are getting the job done."

Osbourn attributed his team's quick start to the girls' dedication to preseason conditioning.

"They've worked very hard to get where they are at," said Osbourn. "It's paying off ... I think our conditioning has been a big factor for us and will continue to be."

In the intra-county matchup, Bridgeport (1-1) hosts Liberty (0-1).

The Indians are led by inside players Beth Guzzi and Peggy Scott and guards Jackie Codling and Kristen Queen.

The Mountaineers, who haven't played in a week, were led by Julie Bee in the opening game loss.

In another Big 10 battle, Robert C. Byrd (1-2) visits Philip Barbour (2-0).

The Eagles, coming off a 53-42 loss to Buckhannon-Upshur, are led by Leah Yertzell. Other contributors include Ashlee Secret, Kyle Veltri, Rebecca Post and Kim Richison.

The Colts counter with a solid squad paced by Amy Markley.

Notre Dame (2-1) visits Grafton (0-2) in an inter-conference contest.

The Irish's Toni Kay Oliverio has stepped up in ND's past two victories while Clarice Dent has made an impact on the inside. Melissa Ferro and Angie Martino also provide solid support.

Other area games: Bishop Donahue at Paden City, Calhoun County at Braxton County, Doddridge County at Williamstown, University at Fairmont Senior, North Marion at Elkins, Brooke at Morgantown, Ritchie County at Tyler Consolidated, Tucker County at Lewis County, Valley Wetzel at Hundred and Wirt County at Roane County.

    Oliverio Leads
    Notre Dame By
    Hawks, 47-38

Toni Kay Oliverio scored a game-high 25 points to lead Notre Dame to its first win of the season as the Irish downed South Harrison 47-38 in girls high school basketball action Friday night at the NDHS gym.

The Fighting Irish, now 1-1 on the season, received a tremendous lift from the performance of Oliverio as the 5-7 senior floor general converted on 9-of-17 shots from the floor, including two three-pointers. She also pulled down seven rebounds and dished out four assists.

"She (Oliverio) stepped it up a little bit tonight," stated Notre Dame coach Steve Gibson. "We still don't have the team concept down right now and we need to start playing better as a team."

Oliverio got the Irish off to a good start with six first period points as Notre Dame held a slim 10-9 margin as the quarter came to a close.

The Hawks, who are 0-2 on the campaign, began to move the ball patiently in the second quarter. They used an 8-2 run over the first four minutes to grab a five-point, 17-12, advantage with 4:43 left on the clock.

Amber Morrison led the charge with four fast-break points and Melissa Dawson added five points to give SHHS a three-point, 22-19, lead at the half.

The second half was a different story for the South Harrison offense. It became impatient against the Irish 1-2-2 zone and this led to a big third period for Notre Dame.

"We played a good ball game for two-and-a-half quarters," remarked Hawks coach Joe Johnson. "We became impatient, got a few points down and couldn't get back into it.

"The shooting continues to be a problem and we are going to have to find someone who can put the ball in the basket."

NDHS outscored the Hawks 14-4 in the decisive third period as the guests made just 2-of-16 shots in the canto and allowed the Irish to open up a 33-26 advantage head ing into the final period of play.

"One of the things we didn't do against Clay-Battelle was play our defense," said Gibson. "We are not noted for being a high scoring team, so we have to play defense or we will lose."

Oliverio led the way for ND in the final period with eight points which included both of her 3-point hoops.

Clarice Dent upped the Irish advantage to double digits, 36-26, with an inside hoop. The closest South Harrison got after that was eight points, 45-37, with 1:38 remaining in the game.

Dent followed Oliverio in scoring for ND with nine points, while Angie Martino added eight.

Morrison paced the Hawks with 14 points. Dawson and Jennifer Young each chipped in nine markers, while Young led all rebound ers in the contest by collecting 12.

    Cougars Maul Bearcats, 79-4

SHINNSTON _ It's only their second game of the 1996-97 season, but already the Lincoln Cougars look to be in midseason form as they crushed Grafton 79-40 in Big 10 girls basketball action.

Led by the play of freshman standout Tabitha Hutson and a strong defensive effort, the Cougars (2-0) jumped out to an early 19-9 lead after one period of play.

However, the Bearcats (0-2) clawed their way to within six early in the second quarter when Shannon Maier canned a 15-foot jumper to bring the score to 19-13.

The remainder of the second canto was all Lincoln as Jody Lambert hit Hutson for two of her game-high 27 points on a back door play to ignite a 21-9 run which closed out the first half.

Chrissy Luchuck added six points for the Cougars in the run as Lincoln put the game away by intermission.

"I really think the key so far for us this year has been our depth," commented LHS head coach Jeff Osbourn. "We've really been working hard and I don't think that it hurts us at all when we put our second team in."

The third quarter was much of the same as the Cougars wasted little time establishing them selves as Hutson was once again the catalyst by scoring on a drive in the lane to give Lincoln a comfortable 42-22 cushion and ending the scoring in that period by drilling a three-pointer from the top of the key.

"I thought that going into to night's game that we had to put a lot of pressure on the ball and get some steals to create points," explained Osbourn. "I don't think we played that well but we were able to do those things tonight and it paid off for us."

Leading the way defensively for the Cougars was C. Luchuck with seven steals to go along with her 15 points in a strong all around effort.

Following Hutson and C. Luchuck in scoring for the Cougars were freshman Teresa Medina with 11 and sophomore Heather McDonnell with 10.

Shilo Villaraza led Grafton with 10 points.
