    Notre Dame Gets in Gear,
Runs Crusaders out of Town, 76-56

    By CHRIS ERRINGTON

Fresh off a loss to Hundred Wednesday night in which Notre Dame coach Angelo Basile said his team had become overconfident and played "flat," the Irish mentor made sure that there would be no repeat of that performance on Friday against Charleston Catholic.

True to his words, the Irish got back to their style of basketball, and literally ran their opponents out of Clarksburg.

Using their deadly fast break and key performances from LaDon Garrett and John Paul Rieser, the Irish improved their record to 8-3 with a 76-56 drubbing of CCHS.

Basile was visibly pleased with the Irish's performance.

"Our intentions tonight were to play with intensity on defense and control the boards, and I think we did that tonight." Basile said. "LaDon played with a lot more intensity tonight, and John Paul is our coach on the court. Now we are 8-3 and back on the winning track. I hope to keep it that way for awhile."

Garrett's inside dominance on the offensive end and Rieser's pin-point passing were too much for CCHS to handle, as the Irish used a 22-3 run midway through the first half to erase a 5-3 deficit and stake themselves to a commanding 25-8 lead. Garrett scored eight of his game-high 25 points in the run that set the tone for the rest of the game.

From that point on, the game turned into an uphill struggle that CCHS would never be able to climb out of. Any attempts at a comeback were crushed under an Irish defense that blocked shots, stole passes and allowed very few offensive rebounds.

The colossal rebounding advantage that the Irish enjoyed was a product of Jeremy Parker's dominance on the glass. On both ends of the court, he controlled the lane, starting fast breaks on the defensive end and getting second chances on the offensive end.

Notre Dame enjoyed double-digit leads throughout the rest of the game, and only gutsy performances by CCHS's Michael Leonoro and Jerome Walker kept the Irish lead from getting out of hand. Leonoro finished with a team high 13, while Walker added 11.

For the Irish, Rieser finished with 14 and Parker added 11.

    RCB Uses Early Second-Half
    Run to Down South Harrison

    By DANNY CARPENTER

Robert C. Byrd used a 10-1 run to start the second half to break open a tied game as the Eagles claimed a 55-39 win over South Harrison Friday night in boys prep basketball action at the RCB gym.

"It was a good win for us tonight after coming off that tough loss last night (to Grafton)," said RCB coach Brad Underwood. "I'm glad we played tonight ... They (SH) played us like a lot of teams and slowed (the tempo) down."

The Hawks' slow-down approach gave the Eagles trouble in the first half as the game was tied 22-22 at the intermission.

But RCB's decisive run to start the third quarter put the game out of reach for the Hawks. SH made one final run with three minutes to go in the third to cut the lead to 32-27, but could get no closer.

The Eagles' Donnie Johnson responded to South Harrison's final push as the senior shooting guard scored RCB's final eight points, including two 3-pointers, of the quarter to give the hosts a comfortable 40-30 lead going into the last eight minutes of the game.

The RCB lead never fell below seven points the rest of the game as the Eagles made six-of-nine free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

"Donnie was able to hit some threes to give us a little bit of distance there (in the third)," said Underwood. "And that was the difference in the game."

In the first half, the Hawks' slow-down offense and Adam Davisson's outside shooting enabled SH to stay close. Davisson scored 17 of his team-high 25 points in those first 16 minutes.

Johnson was the offensive catalyst for the Eagles in first half as well as he tossed in 10 of his game-high 29 points.

"Game in and game out ... I can't fault these kids' effort but we got to put together 32 minutes of basketball," said SHHS coach Robert Shields. "They (RCB) played with some tough teams and we were right up there with them for three quarters and maybe three and a half ... I'm not sure when they broke it (open).

"I'm pleased with the kids' effort but I'm a little disheartened on the fact that we can't get a complete game."

RCB's Marshall Cox added seven points and Troy Lawrence came off the beach to chip in six while the Hawks' Luke Riley came off the bench to add nine points in the losing effort.

The teams battle again Tuesday at South Harrison.

    Old Habits Costly as Lincoln
    Drops Decision to Preston

    By CHRIS ERRINGTON

SHINNSTON _ Two weeks ago, the Lincoln boys basketball team found itself staring at a 2-5 record and the prospects of a very long season. Then, with wins over previously undefeated North Marion, South Harrison and a two-point loss to Liberty, the Cougars seemed to have turned their season around.

Any forward progress that it had made going into Monday night's game with visiting Preston was washed away underneath a lethargic 62-45 thrashing that was much worse than the final score indicated.

Lack of intensity, horrendous shooting and the inability to stop the Knights' powerful inside game caused the Cougars (4-7) to drop one of their worst decisions of the season.

For 32 minutes, Lincoln coach Dennis Hutson could only watch as his club fell further and further behind.

"Preston beat us in every aspect of the game. Offensively, defensively, on the boards, everywhere," Hutson said. "The kids played really hard last week, so I was surprised when they didn't come out and play with any more enthusiasm tonight."

Preston's interior game was keyed by the large presence of Ryan Metheny. The big forward powered his way past Cougar defenders to the tune of a game-high 13 points, including the first six of the game for the Knights.

When not overpowering Lincoln down low, Preston (7-3) used the sharp shooting of guard Pat Zinn to knock down 3-pointers. Zinn finished with nine points and helped pull defenders outside which helped the inside game.

Even with their lack of intensity, the Cougars found themselves down only 11-8 after the first quarter. They even managed to take their only lead of the night at 14-13 on a Clark Riley jumpshot. A late 5-1 Preston run allowed the Knights to grab a 28-22 lead at the half.

After the break, both teams employed a trapping half-court defense to push up the tempo of the game.

For Preston the tactic worked, as Lincoln turned the ball over repeatedly allowing the Knights to score easy buckets.

The Knights used their defense to roll to a 15-0 run in the quarter that ended the competitive aspect of the game. Preston led 47-28 going into the final eight minutes of play.

"We have been pounding the ball down low all year, and it has helped us win seven out of our last eight," said Knights coach Barry Sanders. "Our interior passing has been excellent, and that is a credit to our guards. But if teams key on our inside guys, we have the ability to beat them with the outside shots."

Tim Argabrite and Landon Polce aided Metheny with 12 and 10 points, respectively, while Mike Barnes and Danny Hardesty paced the Cougars with 12 points apiece.
