Eagles hold off Polar Bears in four

by Charles Casey

CORRESPONDENT

CLARKSBURG -- Robert C. Byrd rallied behind the play of Jenna Wolfe and Raina Lafferty to down Fairmont Senior by the scores of 19-25, 25-19, 25-20 and 25-19 in high school volleyball Monday night at the RCB gymnasium.

Wolfe led the Eagles (11-13) with 10 points, 26 kills and three blocks.

Lafferty led RCB in the serving department with 24 points, including three aces, while Amy Spitler added 21 points and four aces.

"I am very happy with the way we were able to fight back from behind," Robert C. Byrd coach Lawren Sandy said. "The girls have been working very hard, and this is a very good win against a team that is in our sectional."

The Polar Bears (4-10) took the opening game by a 25-19 count behind the play of Melissa Hartley. Hartley scored eight points and added five kills for Fairmont Senior.

However, the Eagles responded in second game behind the serving of Lafferty. She scored nine points in the second game, and her five-point run gave RCB a 21-11 advantage before taking the win.

Robert C. Byrd was able to hold on to win the third game behind the serving of Spitler. She scored 10 points with three aces. Wolfe also was dominant with seven kills in the game.

The fourth game was a battle as neither team gained more than a three-point advantage until the final moments.

Samantha Broadstock scored four points for final points of the Eagles victory.

Amber Knapp and Brittany Bond each had a solid floor game for the Eagles. Knapp led the team with 39 assists, while Bond followed with 37 assists.

Hartley led the Polar Bears with 12 points and 10 kills. Suzanne Straight followed with eight kills and five blocks, while Jordan Rexrode added seven points, five kills and two blocks.

Meredith Holbert had 11 assists, while Samantha Keener added eight assists to lead Fairmont Senior's floor game.
