Obituaries for Wednesday, June 5, 2002

E. James "Jimmy" Gillespie

WEBSTER SPRINGS -- E. James "Jimmy" Gillespie, 75, of 103 Sycamore Street, Webster Springs, W.Va., died Monday, June 3, 2002.

The cause of death was extended illness.

He was born February 15, 1927, in Webster Springs, WV.

He was a member of the Church of Christ in Webster Springs and a local retired businessman, as he was owner of Jimmy's Exxon and E. James Gillespie Fuel Oil Distributors, Cherry Falls, for 33 years.

He was a former member of the Webster Springs Volunteer Fire Department, and he served on the Board of Directors of the Webster County National Bank.

He was also a former city councilman, a lifetime member of the WVU Alumni Association and a lifetime member of the VFW Post 3738.

He was a former employee of J.C. Baker & Sons and McCourt Motor Co.

A Navy veteran of WWII, he served on the USS Tennessee and was in the Battle of Iwo Jima (March 1945) and Okinawa (March 16/19-1945).

He was married for 48 years.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Nancy (Cool) Gillespie; two brothers, E. Bernard (Aretta) Gillespie, Cincinnati, and Dr. David Gillespie, Frostburg, Md.; four sisters, Mrs. Helen (Dean) Hufford, Pulaski, Va., Lucille McCoy, Elyria, Ohio, Mrs. Sammie (Bob) Allman, Buckhannon, and Mrs. Caroline (Melvin) Cochran, Webster Springs; sister-in-law, Betty McGinty, Clearwater, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Rosemary and Jeff Bean, and Debbie Blake, all of Clearwater, Fla.; and caregivers, Flecia Brake, Brenda Collins, Lana Cutright and Jamie McIe, all of Clearwater, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence W. Gillespie; mother, Bertha (Baughman) Gillespie; two brothers, Eugene Gillespie and Paul Felix Gillespie; and sister, Louise Varney.

Military graveside rites are by VFW Post 3738.

Visitation time is Thursday, June 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, 155 McGraw, Webster Springs.

Service time is Friday, June 7, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Rev. Nelson Harris and Rev. Rich Demastus will officiate.

Jack Alsop will give eulogy.

Interment in Miller Cemetery, Webster Springs.
