Obituaries for March 10, 2000

John E. Anderson

WESTON -- John E. Anderson, 85, of Jackson Mill community , died at 4:30 a.m. Thursday, March 9, 2000, in the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston following a brief illness.

He was born March 27, 1914, in Kincheloe, a son of the late Jess and Rose Brown Anderson.

He was twice married. On Dec. 18, 1939, he married the former Mary Ann Curtis, who preceded him in death on March 3, 1985. Then on Oct. 4, 1985, he married the former Madeline Lockard, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, James R. Anderson and wife, Beth, Weston and John E. Anderson Jr. and wife, Marion, Richfield, Ohio; one daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn Westfall and husband Jerry, Cross Lanes; two stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Judy Wilborn and husband, Glenn, Leeland, N.C. and Susan Rolland and husband Richard, Hamstead, N.C.; five grandchildren, Christopher Anderson, Annissa Fetty, Sharon Fedele, Susan Percival and Michelle Lane; three great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren, Kristin Cutrell and Cheryl Long and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

Mr. Anderson retired in 1978 from King Knob Coal Company with several years of service and was a 50-year member of the Broad Run Baptist Church.

Friends may call at the Boyle Funeral Home, 322 Main Avenue, Weston from 4-8 p.m. today. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from the Broad Run Cemetery at Jane Lew with Rev. Russell Furr officiating. Interment will follow in the Broad Run Cemetery.

Virginia B. Bosch

BRIDGEPORT -- Virginia Bailey Bosch, 84, of Clarksburg, formerly of Lake Mary, Fla., died Thursday, March 9, 2000.

She was born July 16, 1915, in Clarksburg, a daughter of the late William H. and Artie Bird Dotson Bailey.

Her husband, Leon Simpkins, whom she married June 30, 1945, preceded her in death on May 11, 1959. Her husband, Carl Bosch, whom she married Feb. 27, 1960, preceded her in death Dec. 14, 1978.

Surviving are two stepchildren by her second marriage, Nancy Bosch Masle, Johnstown, N.Y. and Harry Bosch, Mohawk, N.Y.; 11 step grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by one stepchild, Norma Bosch Hoke; one brother, Fred Bailey; three sisters, Masie Bailey Westfall Berry, Elise Bailey Maxon Barrett, Thelma J. Bailey Reynolds; two half sisters, Delcie Bailey Walker and Alice Bailey Carder; two half brothers, Clive Bailey and Marion (Mike) Bailey.

Mrs. Bosch was employed by the Goodyear Rubber Company, Akron, Ohio, for approximately 16 years and the Sanford Orlando Kennel Club, Florida, for approximately 16 years.

She was an expert in the art of hand quilting, crocheting, knitting and crafting. Her friendly demeanor and wonderful personality kept her rich with friends. She was a member of the Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, Kincheloe.

Friends will be received at the Burnside Funeral Home, 607 South Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport from 7-9 p.m. Sunday, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday with Rev. Charles Dunn presiding. Interment will follow in the Mount Lebanon Baptist Cemetery, Benson.

Paul E. Bender

FRENCH CREEK -- Paul Earnest Bender, 74, of Goshen, died at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at his home.

He was born April 8, 1925, in Randolph County, a son of the late George and Clara J. Sines Bender.

Surviving are one son, Terry Bender, Rock Cave; four daughters, Lavona S. Harris, Buckhannon, Sandra K. Putman, Vienna, Va., Gaila Hull, Buckhannon and Carla Canfield, French Creek; three sisters, Effie Gillispie, Rock Cave, Pauline Everts, Morgantown and Joyce Strader, Amhurst, Ohio; two brothers, Lee Bender, Cleveland, Ohio and Seebert Bender, Rock Cave; 16 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Donna Bender; one sister, Leona Long; and one brother, James Bender.

Mr. Bender was a retired steel worker, having retired from the American Bridge Company at Ambridge, Pa., and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3663 of Buckhannon.

He had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He had received a letter of recognition for serving in the greatest Navy in the world, having crushed two enemy fleets at once. Also in recognition, he had received the Pacific Theater Ribbon and the Victory Medal. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren.

Friends will be received at the Robert M. Vincent Funeral Home, French Creek from 6-8 p.m. today. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home chapel at 2 p.m. Saturday with Rev. David Jessie officiating. Burial will follow in the Goshen Cemetery. Robert M. Vincent Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Victor Clarkson

NEWBURG -- Victor Clarkson, 90, of Thornton, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000 at his home.

He was born March 26, 1909, in Thornton, a son of the late Jacob Velarious and Tillie Hamilton Clarkson.

His wife, Mabel Bolyard Clarkson, preceded him in death.

Surviving are two sons, Robert F. Clarkson and Bruce Clarkson, both of Thornton; three daughters, Pauline Ridenour, Bridgeport, Virginia Riffle, Sistersville and Elaine Van Kerkhove, Dallas, Texas; 25 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Victor Clarkson Jr., two daughters, Delphine Moore and Norma Campbell; two grandchildren, Michelle Ridenour and Eric Riffle; one brother, Ferman Clarkson; and one sister, Olive Williamson.

Mr. Clarkson owned and operated his own farm during his life and was a member of the Evansville United Methodist Church.

Minter S. Dennison

WESTOVER -- Minter Sanford "Denny" Dennison, 79, of Bethel Road, Morgantown, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at Monongalia General Hospital.

He was born Dec. 26, 1920, in Doddridge County, a son of the late Minter Silas Bruce and Mary Rosa Nicholson Dennison.

His wife, Betty L. McDonald Dennison, survives.

Also surviving are one son and spouse, George and Paula Dennison, Morgantown; one daughter and spouse, Cherryl Anne and Duane Prickett, Morgantown; five grandchildren, Jessica Anne, Justin Duane, and Janine Marie Prickett, and Corey Wayne and Julie Paige Dennison; one brother, Kenneth Dennison, West Union; one sister, Madeline Bland, Weston; and one sister-in-law, Ferne Dennison, Weston.

He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Nora C. Swisher Dennison and his second wife, Violet "Dolly" Burton Dennison; one granddaughter, Charla Kay Dennison; two brothers, Roscoe and James Dennison; and two sisters, Pauline Dennison Titus and Kathleen Dennison.

Mr. Dennison worked in the area for many years as a golf course superintendent, primarily at the Bridgeport Country Club and the Pines Country Club in Morgantown.

He served with the 39599th Army division during World War II and was a member of the Golf Course Superintendent Association of America and the West Virginia Golf Course Superintendent Association. He was an avid golfer himself and was a Baptist by faith.

Elinor Drake

WESTON -- Elinor Drake, 74, of 605 West Main Street, Glenville, died early Thursday morning, March 9, 2000, in the United Hospital Center in Clarksburg following a brief illness.

She was born Oct. 15, 1925, in Akron, Ohio, a daughter of the late Jacob and Lydia M. Murphy Wolfe.

Surviving are one son, Clyde Doutt, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; two daughters, Phyllis Wolfe, Akron and Deborah Kelley, Virginia; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.

Ms. Drake was employed by Acme Grocery in Akron with 20 years of service and was later employed by West Virginia University Extension Office in Glenville.

She was a member of the board of directors of the Gilmer County Senior Citizens Center and a member of the American Cancer Society.

Edith B. Lindsey

BRIDGEPORT -- Edith Blair Lindsey, 77, of Broaddus Avenue, Clarksburg, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.

She was born Feb. 12, 1923, in Stilwater, Ohio, a daughter of the late James and Ethel Sergeant Blair.

Her husband, Curtis C. Lindsey, preceded her in death in 1975.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Melinda Lindsey, Bridgeport; one sister, Elsie Airmar, Las Vegas, Nev.; and three grandchildren, Donnie, Chris and Tim Lindsey.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Ival, James and Robert Blair and one sister, Edna Dew.

Mrs. Lindsey worked as a bookkeeper for several years with Parson Souders and later at Stone and Thomas department store.

A private funeral service will be held in the Allen Funeral Home, 215 East Main St., Bridgeport, with the Rev. Father Harry Cramer conducting the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the United Way of Harrison County, 301 West Main St., Clarksburg, WV, 26301.

Carl F. Martin Jr.

BUCKHANNON -- Carl Frank Martin Jr., 84, of 134 Fayette Street, Buckhannon, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Buckhannon.

He was born March 18, 1915, in Buckhannon, a son of the late C. Frank and Hazel Williams Martin Sr.

His wife, Helene Martin, whom he married June 17, 1941, survives.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Kathryn Martin Corder.

Mr. Martin was a school teacher and principal for the Upshur County Board of Education. He served in the Army from March 4, 1944 to Dec. 10, 1945.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Buckhannon and was a life member of National Science Teachers.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Carl F. Martin Scholarship Fund at West Virginia Wesleyan College or the First United Methodist Church.

Marjorie M. Moore

CLARKSBURG -- Marjorie M. Moore, 68, of Hepzibah, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, in the United Hospital Center following an extended illness.

She wa born Dec. 25, 1931, in Clarksburg, a daughter of the late Harold and Love VanScoy Davis.

Her husband, George Moore, preceded her in death on Sept. 1, 1971.

Surviving are two sons, Greg Wilson, Ohio and Mickey Wilson, Wilsonburg; one stepson, James Moore, Clarksburg; two daughters, Margie Watson, with whom she made her home in Hepzibah and Sharon Forinash; several grandchildren; two brothers, Ted Davis, Weston and Jimmy Davis, Yuma, Ariz.; and five sisters, Gay Helsel, Stonewood, Kathleen Moore, Port Orange, Fla., Rosetta Whitehair, Clarksburg, Betty Trenum, Keyser and Marie Gardner, Endwood.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, James and Ricky Wilson; one stepson, Greg Moore Jr.; one brother and two sisters.

Mrs. Moore was a Protestant by faith.

Friends may call at the Davis Funeral Home, 443 West Pike Street from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Robert Merritt officiating. Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Park.

Donna K. Mossor

PENNSBORO -- Donna K. Mossor, 41, of Pennsboro, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at Parkersburg.

She was born May 28, 1958, at Parkersburg, a daughter of Everett and Shirley Jones, Pennsboro.

Her husband, James E. Mossor, survives.

Also surviving are one son, Curtis Hackathorn, Pennsboro and her twin brother, Donnie Jones, Pennsboro.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Curtis E. Hackathorn.

Mrs. Mossor had been employed at the Pennsboro Roller Rink, Wilson's Pharmacy, Pennsboro Glass Factory, City of Pennsboro and the P. & H. Restaurant.

She was a graduate of Pennsboro High School with the class of 1978, and volunteered as a driver in taking many people to doctor's appointments and helping in their homes. She was a member of the Hurshers Run United Methodist Church.

Opal V. Nestor

PHILIPPI -- Opal Virginia "Jennie" Nestor, 79, of Route 1, Moatsville, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, in the United Hospital Center, Clarksburg following a brief illness.

She was born May 22, 1920, at Rock Ford near Philippi, a daughter of the late William E. and Carrie B. Boyles Mouser.

Her husband, Robert Jennings Nestor, whom she married Aug. 25, 1940, preceded her in death on Feb. 8, 1996.

Surviving are one daughter, Miss Linda C. Nestor, at home; one son, Edsil A. Nestor, Moatsville; one granddaughter, Mrs. Amanda J. Booth, Moatsville; one great-granddaughter, Ashley A. Booth, Moatsville; one brother, Stanley J. Mouser, Smock, Pa.; three sisters, Mrs. Margie Cross and Mrs. Adis Shaffer, both of Philippi and Mrs. Leithel Frill, Norfolk, Va.

She was also preceded in death by one granddaughter, Carole J. Nestor and by four brothers, Harold, James, Darl and D. Carl Mouser.

Mrs. Nestor was a homemaker and was an avid vegetable and flower gardener. She was a member of the Kasson United Methodist Church.

Vera L. Nicholson

CLARKSBURG -- Vera Lorene Nicholson, 88, of Bridgeport, formerly of Duff Avenue, Clarksburg, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, in a local nursing home following an extended illness.

She was born March 20, 1911, in Newlon, a daughter of the late Gordon and Lena Rexroad Ryder.

Her husband, James R. Nicholson, preceded her in death.

Surviving are one daughter, Carol Liptak, Clarksburg; one son, William G. Nicholson, Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold Ryder, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews, one of whom is Rod Smallridge and wife, Kathie, Bridgeport.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Howard Ryder and one sister, Mabel Smallridge.

Mrs. Nicholson was a 50-year member of Queen Esther Chapter 11 Order of Eastern Star, and was a member of the Stealey United Methodist Church, where she was also a member of the Women's Society.

Friends may call at the Davis Funeral Home, 443 West Pike Street, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday with Rev. Susan Rector officiating. Interment will be in the Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

Edna P. Stevens

GRAFTON -- Edna Palestine Cox Stevens, 71, of Jones Street, Grafton, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at her residence.

She was born Jan. 31, 1929, in Grafton, a daughter of the late Arthur F. and Lula M. Poling Cox.

Her husband, Lester Stevens, whom she married March 17, 1946, preceded her in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Janet "Starr" Bell and husband, David, and Barbara Kay Lough and husband, Lonnie, all of Grafton; one brother, Benjamin "Ben" Cox, Grafton; one sister, Rachel Cunningham, Warren, Ohio; six grandchildren, Julie E. Rowand and husband, Mark, Grafton, Steven M. Lough and wife, Melissa, Martinsburg, Brian C. Lough and wife, Buffy, Grafton, Janet N. Watton and husband, Bill, Fairmont, Angela K. Bell and Stephanie L. Bell, both of Grafton; seven great-grandchildren, Andrew and Zachary Rowand, Grafton, Dominic Lough, Grafton, Mark, Nicholas and Johnathan Watton, Fairmont and Kaymn Bell, Grafton; and her friend and companion, Bill Pierson, Grafton.

She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Helen Poe, Mabel Poe, Rhoda Hendershot and Myoma J. Ball; two brothers, Edmond L. "Bud" Cox and David P. Cox; and one great-grandson, David A. Bell.

Mrs. Stevens was retired from Foodland and was a member of the Blueville Church of Christ and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary.

Phillip Valent

FREMONT, Ohio -- Phillip Valent, 76, of County Road 212, Fremont, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at his home.

He was born May 2, 1923, in Clarksburg, W.Va., a son of the late Philip Valent and Emma H. Windon.

His wife, D. June Cleland Valent, whom he married June 2, 1945, in Reading, England, survives.

Also surviving are one son, William E. Valent, Kansas; six daughters, Susan J. Bolen, Bradner, Carol A. Slemmer and Lynne K. Stevens, both of Fremont, Sharon L. Taylor, Bradenton, Fla., Dottie J. Meek, Ruskin, Fla., and Kathy E. Brunnet, Weston; two sisters, Lucille Bolle, Bridgeport, W.Va., and Maxine Ice, Hepzibah, W.Va.; 21 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Tressie Hurst and Mabel Thomson.

Mr. Valent was employed as a truck driver for 27 years, serving 13 years with Signal Delivery Service until he retired in April of 1982. He was also employed by the Herbrand.

He was in the Air Force, during World War II, serving in the European Tour in England. He was a member of Overseas Irish Club of Toledo, Lazy Aces Saddle Club, the American Legion of Fremont, Teamster Retirees Local 20, Eagles of Clyde, Old Codgers Breakfast Club at Fremont Burger King, and was a life member of the Clyde Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was also a very avid bowler, bowling in several leagues a week.
