Obituaries for Wednesday, July 31, 2002

Wayne Paul Criss

SHINNSTON -- Wayne Paul Criss, 64, of Rt. 1, Lumberport, died at 3:46 a.m. Monday, July 29, 2002, in the United Hospital Center, following an extended illness.

He was born at Brown, WV, July 26, 1938, a son of the late Walter Raymond Criss and Dollie Mae Williams Criss Martin.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha Ann Kraley Criss, whom he married December 22, 1959. Also surviving are 2 sons, Wayne Paul Criss Jr., Duane E. Criss, both at home; 1 daughter and son-in-law, Jane Ann and Rodney Carder, Lumberport; 2 granddaughters, Natasha Renee Wright and her husband, Tommy, Mannington, Ashley Nicole Carder, Lumberport; 2 brothers and a sister-in-law, Harold and Wilma Criss, N.C., Fredrick and Anita Criss, Rosemont; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by 2 brothers and 1 sister.

Mr. Criss worked as a painter, plasterer, pointer and mason, having worked for Ralph Mearns.

At his request, Mr. Criss will be cremated and there will be no public services.

The Dorsey Funeral Home www.dorseyfuneralhome.com, Shinnston, is in charge of the arrangements.

Dora E. Duffield

CLARKSBURG -- Dora E. Duffield, age 79, of Clarksburg Continuous Care and formerly of Folsom, WV, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, in the United Hospital Center.

She was born in Wetzel County on February 13, 1923, a daughter of the late John Edward Johnston and Mary (Molly) Morgan Johnston.

Mrs. Duffield was the youngest of eleven children.

Her husband, Richard G. Duffield, preceded her in death on February 14, 1994.

Surviving are two daughters, Sharon Ann Smola, Morgantown, WV, Marilyn Meko, Salem, WV; two sons, Richard (Rick) Duffield Jr., Pine Grove, WV, David Stanley Duffield, Clarksburg, WV; two brothers, Brooks Johnston, West Milford, WV, Garland Johnston, Paden City, WV; one sister, Sylvia Highley, New Martinsville, WV; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers.

In previous years, she attended the Presbyterian Church in Cameron, WV. She was a Homemaker.

Friends will be received at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main Street, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 2, 2002, with the Reverend Judith Lively presiding.

Interment will be in the Shinnston Masonic Cemetery.

JoAnne Belle Kerns Landfried

RIPLEY -- JoAnne Belle Kerns Landfried, 70, of Ripley, died Monday, July 29, 2002, at Cedar Ridge Center, after a long series of illnesses.

She was born August 22, 1932, in Braxton County, a daughter of Winnie Bowyer Kerns of Ripley and the late Charles William Kerns.

Mrs. Landfried taught school for 23 years at Ripley and Ravenswood and, along with her husband, owned Landfried Insurance Agency in Ripley.

She will always be remembered for her service to the community as leader of the Jackson County Pilot Club, where she served as a member, past president and District Governor.

She attended the Friendship and Loyalty Circles at Epworth United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her beloved husband, John Landfried; adopted children Nancy and David; sisters Patricia Pate of Ripley and Mary Sue Carr and her husband, Cyril L. Carr, of Levittown, Long Island. She is also survived by two nieces, Christy Lane Hanks Quinland of Huntington, Long Island, and Patricia Lynn Pate Galligan of Fayetteville, N.C.; and by two grandnieces, Taylor and Vanessa Quinland of Huntington, Long Island.

A Celebration of Life Service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, August 2, 2002, at the Epworth United Methodist Church, Ripley, with Rev. Dr. Ken Krimmel and the Rev. Elizabeth Walker officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in JoAnne's memory to the Habitat for Humanity or the Jackson County Ministerial Association.

Vail Funeral Home, Ripley, is in charge of arrangements.

Ullwin N. Pugh

WEBSTER SPRINGS -- Ullwin N. Pugh, 76, of Hacker Valley, passed away July 27, 2002, following a recurring battle with leukemia.

He was born May 17, 1926, the second son of the late Elmer M. and Clara Goff Pugh.

A lifelong resident of Webster County, he graduated from Webster Springs High School with the Class of 1944. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a retired poultry farmer, truck driver and logging contractor.

Ullwin is survived by his wife of 56 years, Willa Bickel Pugh; two daughters, Debby Stone of Buckhannon and Doretta Osburn of Hurricane; one son, Woody Pugh of Webster Springs; one granddaughter, Lauren Osburn of Hurricane; one grandson, Adam Stone of Buckhannon; one sister, Leta Payne of Raleigh, North Carolina; and one brother, Wendell Pugh of Berkeley Springs. He was preceded in death by one brother, Dr. Donzal Pugh.

Friends may call Friday, August 2, 2002, from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. at Dodd and Reed Funeral Home in Webster Springs.

Service will be Saturday, August 3, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Dodd and Reed Funeral Home in Webster Springs.

Burial will be in the Hacker Valley Cemetery, Hacker Valley.

Virginia Tyson Rittenhouse Rice

SHINNSTON -- Virginia Tyson Rittenhouse Rice, 93, of Clarksburg, died at 8:50 a.m. Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at the Arbors Nursing Center in Fairmont, following an extended illness.

She was born December 18, 1908, in Dola, a daughter of the late Samuel T. and Elizabeth Moore Harmer Rittenhouse.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Weldy Rice, who died March 8, 1990.

She is survived by 1 daughter, Carolyn Tyson Rice Bell, Clarksburg; 2 grandchildren, Elizabeth Tyson Bell Kakacek and her husband, Peter, Charlotte, N.C., and Justin Matthew Bell, Baltimore, MD.

Mrs. Rice was also preceded in death by her brother, Justin Philip Rittenhouse.

She was a graduate of WI High School and a 1932 graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College, where she was a member of the Emeritus Club.

She was also a member of the Broad Oaks United Methodist Church, the Daniel Davisson Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Shinnston and Harrison County Historical Societies. She was also a 50-year member of the Weirton Chapter #147, O.E.S., and a former member of the Weirton Woman's Club.

Friends will be received at the Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston, on Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 3, 2002. Interment will follow at the Shinnston Masonic Cemetery.

The Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston, is charge of the arrangements.

Ethel P. Roberts

MANNINGTON -- Ethel P. Roberts, 90, of Mannington died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at the Fairmont General Hospital, following an extended illness.

She was born April 29, 1912, at Rachel, a daughter of the late James Vincent and Vilinda Barker Price.

Mrs. Roberts was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Mannington, where she was a member of the Delta Alpha Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #6, Augusta Chapter, where she was a past matron, and a member of the State of West Virginia Order of the Amaranth.

She was a former employee of Westinghouse and Mannington TV & Cable Inc., and retired as a sales clerk from J.M. Hartley and Son in Fairmont. She was a graduate of Mannington High School, Class of 1934.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and John Hickman of Fairmont; a grandson, John S. Hickman II, Fairmont; a sister, Edith V. Sturm, Monaca, PA; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Byrd Price, Mannington; and 4 nephews, Wilbur Sturm, Beaver Falls, PA, Rex Sturm, Colorado Springs, Kenneth Sturm, Chicago, IL, and Randy Sturm, Pittsburgh, PA.

She was also preceded in death by her husband of over 61 years, Clarence R. Roberts, who died on October 5, 1998; and a brother, Edward F. Price.

Friends may call at the Dent Funeral Home in Mannington from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday and from 1-9 p.m. Thursday, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 2, 2002, with the Rev. Gail Carson officiating. Interment will be in the Mannington Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Mannington.

Serving as pallbearers will be: L.D. Schmidt, Jim Pitrolo, Sam Aloi Jr., Joseph Manchin IV, Don Aloi and Danny Roberts.
