Doddridge County loses; Irish win

WEST UNION -- The Williamstown Yellowjackets, behind the stellar play of guards Samantha Badgley and Cali Pate, defeated Doddridge County, 63-33, in girls basketball.

Pate scored a game-high 28 points, while Badgley followed with 20 points.

Williamstown (3-0), without two of its starters, held the Bulldogs (1-1) in check with a strong defensive effort, holding Doddridge to just 21 percent shooting (13-of-61) from the floor.

Pate and Badgley accounted for all but one of their team's points in the first half as Williamstown held a 25-15 lead at intermission.

Tied at 15-15 with 3:49 left in the first half, the Yellowjackets went on a 25-2 run to put the game out of reach, 40-17.

"I didn't think we picked (Williamstown) up in transition very well," Doddridge County coach Craig Kellar said.Judi Rose led the Bulldogs with 14 points.

Boys basketball

n NOTRE DAME 87, Cameron 73: Notre Dame jumped to a 24-15 first quarter lead and never looked back against Cameron.

Nick Carbacio led Notre Dame (1-1) with a game-high 38 points, including four 3-pointers. Timmy Swiger added 18 points, including seven of seven at the foul line, while Jake Minges and Kenny Beerbower each finished with 11 points.

n BUCKHANNON-UPSHUR 71, Lewis County 59: Adam Kelley and Brandon Reed led a balanced scoring attack with 15 and 12 points, respectively, to help lead Buckhannon-Upshur.

After trailing 20-10 heading into the second quarter, the Minutemen (0-2) cut the lead to 49-45 entering the fourth. However, the Buccaneers (2-0) used a 22-14 advantage to secure the win.

Pat Morrison led Lewis County with 14 points, while teammates Joey Thompson and Tyler Bailey followed with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Chad Winters grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for Buckhannon-Upshur, and teammate Brandon Reed chipped in 12 points.
