Clarksburg 10K seeking volunteers

by Rob Peirce

SPORTS WRITER

The Greater Clarksburg 10K wants you -- not to run, but to volunteer.

About 400 volunteers are needed for a three-day period beginning two days before the event on July 27 and ending with clean-up immediately following the race on July 29.

"You get a chance to see some of the best runners in the country and the city," said Pete Bowie, one of the volunteer contacts.

Volunteers also get a T-shirt and a chance to attend the post-race party and a discount on the post-day luncheon with the race's elite runners.

A volunteer could serve in several functions. Among them: Course monitor, course safety, crowd control, refreshment distribution, finish-line monitor, physical workers, road guards, medical assistants, kid organizers and T-shirt distribution.

Several people can volunteer for the race as representatives of an organization, Bowie said.

For example, if the Boy Scouts want to get a few people together so they can be seen, the race would be a good way to do that, he said.

To volunteer for the race, contact Stewart Kirby at 623-4739, Buddy Axton at 622-7812 or Pete Bowie at 623-3185, or fill out and mail the enclosed form. A meeting for all volunteers is scheduled for Wednesday, July 26 at the Harrison County Court House.

Sports Writer Rob Peirce can be reached at 626-1444.
