Gilmer claims Doddridge tournament

by Randall Jett

CORRESPONDENT

WEST UNION -- Gilmer County, behind a 20-0 run to start the game, defeated Doddridge County, 54-36, in the championship game of the Kermit Vanscoy Invitational Tournament on Friday.

The Titans (5-2) held Doddridge scoreless until the 5:42 mark of the second quarter when Judi Rose scored on a putback.

Gilmer County was led by Amy Skinner, who finished with 16 points, and teammates Judi Cunningham and Denae Dobbins, who added 13 and 12 points, respectively.

"We tried to put pressure on (Doddridge) early and tried to create some offense," Gilmer County coach Jay Chambers said. "Our girls played well early, and it kind of went into our hands."

Lisa Davis led Doddridge County (2-4) with 13 points, while teammate Judi Rose chipped in nine points.

"I thought we did all right after we broke the shutout," Doddridge coach Craig Kellar said. "The game was pretty even after that. We did some good things in the second half. It just took a long time to get going."

In the consolation game, Calhoun County earned its first win of the season, downing Robert C. Byrd, 55-50.

Calhoun jumped to a 17-4 lead after the first quarter, but RCB pulled within 31-30 with 1:32 remaining in the third quarter. Calhoun closed the quarter with a six-point edge, and the Eagles could get no closer than three points.

Melanie Davis scored 14 points, and Brandi Richards added 13 for Calhoun.

Robert C. Byrd (1-6) was led by Keisha Bowsman's 22 points. Maggie Davis added 11.

n RCB BOYS 59, Preston 49: Junior R.J. Coleman scored a game-high 17 points to help lead Robert C. Byrd (2-2) to a win over Preston in the loser's bracket of the Big "D" Holiday Tournament in Fairmont.

Heath Frazier added 10 points, and teammate Andrew Barberio chipped in nine for the Eagles.
