The Harrison County Commission has scheduled a public hearing September 19 to hear comments about the continued annexation of property along U.S. Route 50 and Interstate 279 near the Taylor County line into the city limits of Bridgeport.
The initial annexation stopped about 150 yards short of the Taylor County line. This extension would take the annexation to the county line.
We agree with the officials of the City of Bridgeport in presenting the county commission with a petition to extend the annexation to the county line. Extending the annexation will allow Bridgeport police to patrol U.S. Route 50 to the county line. The city will gain little or no revenue from the annexation since only the highway is being annexed. However, this will allow Bridgeport to provide police assistance to the county line in the case of an accident.
Property owners will have the opportunity to express their comments and concerns to the commission at the Sept. 19 hearing. The city attorney for Bridgeport who presented the petition said that the property owners were not opposed to the petition and supported the decision to annex.
We feel that if there is no opposition by property owners that the decision to extend the annexation to the Taylor County line only makes sense. The inclusion of the additional 150 yards to the county line is only picking up what should have been included in the initial annexation.
