Obituaries for Wednesday, April 5, 2000

Joyce Ann Bowyer

FAIRMONT -- Joyce Ann Bowyer, 54, of Fort Mill, S.C., died Sunday, April 2, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center at Rock Hill, N.C.

She was born Nov. 11, 1945, at Mannington, a daughter of the late Charles E. and Betty Layne Bowyer.

Surviving are several aunts and uncles.

She was also preceded in death by her grandparents, Charles and Mary Layne, Monongah, and Everett and Letha Bowyer, Mannington.

Mrs. Bowyer was a former resident of Mannington and West Union before moving to South Carolina. She was employed by U.S. Air in the Cargo Department at the Charlotte International Airport.

She enjoyed gardening and her cats. When living in West Union, she attended the Christian Church of West Union.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Heart Association or an animal shelter.

Lawson E. 'Bud' Burton

FLEMINGTON -- Lawson E. "Bud" Burton, 75, of Flemington, died Monday, April 3, 2000, at Buckhannon.

He was born June 22, 1924, in Flemington, a son of the late F. Howard and Bonnie L. Batson Burton.

His wife, Delores J. Burton, survives.

Also surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, David E. and Luella Burton, Route 1, Flemington, and Allen and Jeanne Burton, Leonardtown, Md.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James H. and Betty Burton, Buena Park, Calif., J. Thomas and Jean Burton, Flemington; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth and Philip Campbell, Pennsicola, Fla., Mary Heimbaugh, Akron, Ohio, and Mrs. Jo Ann and James Edwards, Uniontown, Pa.; five grandchildren, Jennifer, Scott, Aaron, Lindsay and Adam Burton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Roberta Yeatman; and one brother, William F. Burton.

Mr. Burton was a member of the Flemington United Methodist Church and the Flemington Senior Citizens. He was a member of the Unison Lodge No. 152 I.O.O.F., Flemington, and is now a member of the Harrison Lodge No. 223 I.O.O.F, Wolf Summit. He was also a member of the Star of Encampment.

He was a recorder for the Town of Flemington for 20 years. He was a recorder during the construction and dedication of the Flemington Community Building. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired from Central Air Supply in Clarksburg with 20 years of service as an accountant. He was licensed to practice before the Internal Revenue Service. He served as secretary/treasurer of the Southwestern Water during construction and operation.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Flemington United Methodist Church.

Donald Flor Carlin

CLARKSBURG -- Donald Flor Carlin, 61, of Ebensburg, Pa., died Saturday, April 1, 2000, in Braxton County, as the result of an automobile accident.

He was born July 4, 1938, in Braxton County, a son of the late Brenton and Chessie M. Gregory Roupe.

His wife of 36 years, Rebecca L. Fodor Carlin, survives.

Also surviving are one brother, David Carlin, Lexington, Ky.

Mr. Carlin was a mining engineer registered in four states. He was previously employed by Gwin, Dobson & Foreman, Inc. He was co-owner of Rebekah Manor, Inc. Personal Care Homes which are located in Ebensburg, Johnstown, Barnesboro and Creeson, Pa., from 1975 to present.

He was a member of Summit Lodge F&AM, Ebensburg, Pa., and the Valley Consistory of Altoona. He was former De Molay and De Molay Advisor. He was also a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Ebensburg, where he previously served as a Deacon, Trustee and Elder. He loved to travel the world and he loved life.

Friends may call at the Davis Funeral Home, 433 West Pike St., Clarksburg, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today. The body will then be taken to the Askew-Houser Funeral Home in Ebensburg, Pa., where visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Presbyterian Church in Ebensburg. Interment will be in the Lloyd Cemetery, Ebensburg, Pa.

Mary E. Cross

PENNSBORO -- Mary E. Cross, 85, of Salem, formerly of Cabin Run in Doddridge County, died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at Clarksburg.

She was born May 28, 1914, at Tollgate, a daughter of the late William A. and Virdie A. Lamp Stull.

Surviving are nine daughters, Karen Hinton and Doris Gaston, both of Salem, Dessie Burgess, Dover, Ohio, Tressie Monigold, Newport Ritchey, Fla. Bessie Roth, Dorothy Nitz, Elizabeth Murphy and Imogene Anderson, all of Toronto, Ohio, and Mary Mossor, Kent Ohio; three sons, Robert Cross, Ellenboro, Charles Cross, West Union, Johnny Cross, Toronto, Ohio; 30 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by 13 brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Cross was a homemaker and a Protestant by faith.

Audra May Dowell

BUCKHANNON -- Audra May Dowell, 70, of Buckhannon Manor, Buckhannon, died Monday, April 3, 2000, at the United Hospital Center in Clarksburg.

She was born April 13, 1929, at Gassaway, a daughter of the late Aubrey Jarrett and Lura Shephard Warner.

Surviving are her former husband, Robert J. (Jim) Dowell, Spruce Fork; two daughters, Barbara A. Shipley and husband, Randall, and Camella L. Crites and husband, Tom, all of Buckhannon; two sons, James E. Dowell and wife, Louise, Buckhannon, and Roger A. Dowell and wife, Candace, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four grandchildren, Gerald W. Zirkle, Travis W. Shipley, both of Buckhannon, Katrina D. Dowell and Melissa K. Dowell, both of South Carolina; five step grandchildren, William (Chuck) Nolan, Buckhannon, Ronald L. Nolan, Charlotte, N.C., Jennifer Cutright, Bridgeport, Scott Chenoweth, Shinnston, and Jillana Chenoweth, Morgantown; five step great-grandchildren, Ronald L. Nolan Jr., Maryland, Benjiman James, Megan A. Nolan, Emily Nolan, all of Buckhannon, and Wyatt Nolan, North Carolina; one brother, Roy L. Warner and wife, Shirley, Route 9, Buckhannon; one sister, Ida M. Shultz, Greenwich, Ohio; a special friend, Orvis Koon, Buckhannon Manor, Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by one granddaughter, Rhonda Shipley.

Goldie Gertrude Harbert

PARSONS -- Goldie Gertrude Harbert, 89, of the Parsons Road, Montrose, more recently of Colonial Palace, Elkins, died Monday afternoon, April 3, 2000, at Colonial Place. She had been declining in health and death was attributed to a stroke.

She was born June 30, 1910, at Mannington, a daughter of the late John C. and Ocie K. Toothman.

Her husband, Frank B. Harbert, whom she married Jan. 7, 1933, at Farmington, preceded her in death Feb. 17, 1982.

Surviving are one son, Donald D. Harbert and wife, Mary, Marlton, N.J.; one brother, Donald Toothman, Bridgeport; one daughter-in-law, Karen Harbert; five grandsons, Jim, David, Tom, Larry and Marshall Harbert; two granddaughters, Debbie and Peggy; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one son, John M. Harbert; and one brother, Hershel Toothman.

Mrs. Harbert was a graduate of Mannington High School with the Class of 1928. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Fairmont State College and her masters degree of education from West Virginia University in 1959. She was an elementary school teacher at Marion County for 33 years, having taught at Level's, Plum Run, Everson, Worthington and Carolina.

She was a member of the National Education Association, the West Virginia Classroom Teachers Association, the American Association of University Women and the Worthington Baptist Church, where she served as Sunday School Teacher and the Leader of the Women's Society. She was an avid reader and gardener.

Elaine Isner

BRIDGEPORT -- Elaine Hoover Isner, a resident of Sun Bridge Nursing Home, Salem, died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg, following an extended illness.

She was born Dec. 13, 1937, a daughter of the late Fred C. Hoover and Florence Northrup Hoover.

Surviving are four daughters, Kathy Hooper, Shinnston, Sue Swiger, Clarksburg, Darlene Michaels, Anmoore, and Kathleen Barr, New Martinsville; one son, Richard Isner Jr., Clarksburg; one sister, Wanda Hoover, Clarksburg; seven grandchildren, Angela Hooper and Alysha Hooper, both of Shinnston, Dwayne, Joseph and Kayla Buffey, all of Clarksburg, Shawna Barr and Shayla Isner, both of New Martinsville; and several nieces and nephews.

Ms. Isner was Methodist

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, where the funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday. Interment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park.

Julia Ann Lockwood

BUCKHANNON -- Julia Ann Lockwood, 40, of 38 West Victoria St., Buckhannon, died Monday April 3, 2000, at Holbrook Nursing Home, Buckhannon.

She was born June 6, 1959, at Charleston, a daughter of Rosaline S. Sponaugle Lockwood of Buckhannon and the late Raymond S. Lockwood.

Also surviving are one brother, John B. and Nancy Lockwood, Buckhannon; two nephews, J.B. Lockwood, Glenville, and Ryan Lockwood, Buckhannon; two nieces, Jamella Lockwood, Fairmont and Jennifer Kerns, Buckhannon; and several cousins.

Ms. Lockwood was a secretary for Rosewood Lumber Company. She was a Methodist by Faith.

Lucy Virginia Ogden

FARMINGTON -- Lucy Virginia Ogden, 90, of Route 1, Farmington, died at 8:10 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, following a sudden illness.

She was born April 19, 1909, at Little Bingamon, a daughter of the late Neil and Carrie Tetrick Kellar.

Her husband, Garnett Ogden, preceded her in death April 6, 1969.

Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Susan Ogden, Farmington, Denzil and Joyce Ogden, Barrackville, Ira and Florence Ogden, with whom she made her home; one daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Bradley Layne, Monongah; nine grandchildren, Wendy Cokely, Heather Fisher, Chad, Todd and Cheryl Ogden, Suzette Williams, Ira Ogden Jr., Cathy Layne and Janet VanGilder; six great-grandchildren, Jim, Kayla, Latasha, Hunter Williams, Nickie Cokely, and Austin Fisher; and several nieces and nephews.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having also been preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Mrs. Ogden was a homemaker and a member of the Oakhurst Church of Christ.

Marshall W. Pingley

PINE GROVE -- Marshall W. Pingley, 77, of Jacksonburg, died Monday, April 3, 2000, at Rada's Personal Care Home of Sistersville.

He was the son of the late Hayden and Bernice C. Bennett Pingley.

His wife, Elnora Morgan Pingley, survives.

Also surviving are three sons, John, Jerry and Perry Pingley, all of Jacksonburg; one sister, Lena Dishon, Florida; and three grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Emory, Stanley, George and Virgil; and four sisters, Genivieve Vandevender, Mary Arbogast, Izetta Pingley and Mona Vandevender.

Mr. Pingley was a member of the Methodist Church at Jacksonburg. He was a retired coal miner and an army veteran.

Chet Roupe

CLARKSBURG -- Chet Roupe of West Milford, died Sunday, April 1, 2000, in Braxton County, as the result of an automobile accident.

She was born in Heaters, a daughter of the late O.A. and Georgia E. Prince Gregory.

Her husband David Roupe, preceded her in death in 1978.

Surviving are one son, Dave Carlin, Lexington, Ky.; two grandchildren, David L. Carlin Jr. and Erin Raines; one great-grandchild, Haley B. Raines; two sisters, Jessie Riffle, Orville, Ohio, and Lona Davis, Dugsper, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by one infant daughter, Sheila Carlin; two sons, John and Donald Carlin; three brothers, Bee, Moody and Robert "Bob" Gregory; and four sisters, Doris McCord, Edith Amos, Gladys Dennison, and Pearl Dennison.

Mrs. Roupe was a member of the West Milford City Council, the Senior Citizens, and was active with the West Milford Community Center. She was a member of the West Milford United Methodist Church.

Friends may call at the Davis Funeral Home, 433 West Pike St., Clarksburg, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Gary Rapking officiating. Interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery.

Beulah Marie White

PENNSBORO -- Beulah Marie White, 92, of Pennsboro, died Monday, April 3, 2000, at Parkersburg.

She was born April 24, 1907, near Sutton in Braxton County, a daughter of the late John Thomas and Artie M. Murphy Ocheltree.

Her first husband, Worthy O. Messenger and her second husband, Magnus C. White preceded her in death.

Surviving are one brother, Draper Ocheltree, Tanner Creek Road, Newberne; a nephew and caregiver, Robert Ocheltree, Pennsboro; and several other nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Bernard, Cecil and Willie Ocheltree.

Mrs. White managed a creamery in Hyndman, Pa., for the Fairmont Foods Company. She was a member of the Pennsboro Senior Citizens. She dispatched for the Ritchie County Emergency Squad, Pennsboro division for 16 years. She was a member of the Mountaintop Weslyan Church at Mountaintop, Md.
