Moose claims five wins; Post 13 earns split

From Staff Reports

T.B. Bailey pitched five innings, scattering three hits and Clarksburg Moose exploded for six runs in the third inning to snap a scoreless tie and cruise to an easy win.

Justin Nutt highlighted the inning with a two-run home run for Moose (12-1). Scott Ross added two hits, including a double, while Drew Toth doubled also.

Over the weekend, Moose went 4-0 in Weirton.

Andrew Knight tossed a one-hitter and struck out 11 in a 23-0 win over Wellsburg. Gabe Devono, BenJo McKinney and Nutt each had three hits, while James Funk and Knight added two hits each.

Moose also defeated Weirton 8-3 and 6-2.

Justin Wright picked up the win in the first game. Funk went 3-for-4 with a home run, while Trey Adams and Mike Nicholas each homered. Nutt and Toth followed with two hits each.

In the second game, Tommy Cohen and Nutt each had two hits to lead Moose. Chad Southern got the win.

American Legion

n CLARKSBURG EARNS SPLIT: Clarksburg Post 13 earned a doubleheader split with Belpre, Ohio on Sunday.

Belpre won the first game 5-4, while Clarksburg took a 5-4 victory in the second game.

In the first game, Belpre scored the winning run in the seventh, and a Clarksburg rally in the bottom of the inning fell short.

Jeff Straface was 3-for-4 with a double for Clarksburg (10-5), while Aaron Byrd added a solo home run.

In the second game, Kurt Skasik's single to right scored George Shehl with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

Andy Wilhelm picked up the win in relief.

Clarksburg battles Fairmont today at 7:05 p.m.

Dirt track racing

Clarksburg's Paul Wilmoth continued his domination at the Interstate 79 Speedway by capturing his sixth consecutive Late Model feature.

Wilmoth, who led all 30 laps of the event, took home $1,500 for the race which served as the third leg of the West Virginia State Championship Series. Gary Dalton finished second, while Robbie Scott, Chuck Harper and Jimmy Cobb rounded out the top five.

In Semi-Late action, Chris Smith finished first ahead of Duane Moreland, Rick Burrows who came in second and third.

Ron Parrish won the Fox 46 Modified Feature for his third win of the year, while Pat Frazier grabbed his first win of the year in the Pure Stock feature, holding off a late charge by John Smith. Dave Summers was also victorious.

Golf

n HOLE IN ONE: Charles W. Reed recorded a hole-in-one, June 10 at Salem Country Club. Reed recorded the ace the on the par-3, 176-yard No. 5 with a driver.

Matt Fogg, Don Barker and Laura Jo Hastings witnessed the shot.
