BRIDGEPORT -- With a possible record number of entrants, today's Benedum 5K gives local runners a chance to tune up for the Greater Clarksburg 10K.
The Benedum 5K, the fifth race of the Clarksburg Area Racing Series, had a record 193 runners last year, and race director Robert "Wally" Neeley believes the event will surpass that level this year.
He said more 100 participants have pre-register and expects to have a large number sign up on today with racing conditions at an ultimate level -- high 60s and low humidity.
"If the weather is good, we could have over 200 by race time," Neeley said. "We have a good number of people from out of (Harrison) county waiting to see what the weather's like and that's understandable."
An early verbal commitment to Neeley was CARS leader, Fayetteville's Larry Taylor.
Last year's winners, West Union's Daniel Edgell and Bridgeport's Tracy Hoare, have not committed and may do so this morning.
Pre-registration for today's event is 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. behind Bridgeport High School at the city park. The event starts at 8:30 a.m. behind the high school and runs through the streets of Bridgeport.
Race-day entry fee is $12.
