Dalton captures I-79 late model feature

From Staff Reports

Gary Dalton was among the drivers to win features this weekend during season-opening races at Interstate 79 Speedway.

Dalton outlasted Mike Balzano, Robbie Blair and Butch McGill in the late model feature.

In semi-late action, Chris Smith won the 20-lap feature after Rick Burrows retired with a fuel pick-up problem. Smith was followed by L.C. Powers, Stevie Wilmoth, Vic Dawson and Scott Chenoweth.

Subbing for an injured Ray Johnson, Vic Vandergrift won the UMP modified class feature. Dave Defibaugh, last year's modified champion, finished second followed by Kenny Rogers, Doug Thompson and Wayne Jordan.

Jeff Kesling and Jim Byers, two of last season's top pure stock drivers, again battled in the feature. Kesling won, pulling away from Byers, Jay Martin, Jimmy Shaffer and Chet McLean.

Mike Simpson, a winner of 12 four-cylinder features last year, won over Bill Robinson, Tom Simpson, Bruce Satterfield and D. Jay Miller.
