A new senior citizens center is currently under construction in Glenville, and senior citizens within the community are celebrating. The new facility will offer more activities for seniors, with plans that include a craft room, exercise room, quilting room and a small library.

The existing senior center on Main Street has been too small to handle the functions and dinners that were provided for seniors of the county. Dinners held at the center would draw close to 250 seniors, but the center only had space for 75. Parking has also been a problem at the existing facility because there is no parking lot for visitors.

The new center will take care of both of these problems, as well as many other shortcomings that exist at the current location.

The cost of the new center is estimated to be around $1.5 million, with funding being obtained through contributions, government funds and fund-raisers. Seniors have been active in helping to raise money for the new center by holding fund- raisers over the last few years. Recently they netted $1,400 for the center by having a ramp dinner in which they used 36 bushels of ramps.

We applaud the efforts of seniors and residents of the county in seeing that the seniors have a quality facility in which they can meet and hold their activities. Gilmer County has many seniors who utilize the senior center, and it is only right that they have a facility that accommodates their needs.
