Elite runners competing in the Greater Clarksburg 10K aren't overly concerned with fitness and nutrition. On race day, they're worried more about running into the back of the pace cars.
For the rest of the field, it's more about the basics. Enter the 10 Weeks to the 10K program.
For the third straight year, race director Carl Hatfield has developed a comprehensive series of meetings designed to aid runners participating in the Greater Clarksburg 10K. This year's program begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Family Medicine Building on the United Hospital Center campus.
John Pulice, a Family Medicine physical therapist, is among the numerous medical and running experts who will provide instruction over the next two-plus months.
"Ten weeks is about the appropriate time to get ready for a 10K," Pulice said. "We have some avid runners (in the program) and that's great, but even some of them pick up some tips from other runners."
In addition to focusing on usual topics such as proper hydration during the race, Pulice said there will be new topics in 2000.
Among those is yoga, which will be included during Tuesday's session. Guest speakers also will deal with foot protection and race strategy. Former cross country coach Sam Maniar of Morgantown will offer race-day tips.
Pulice and others will offer free physicals during Tuesday's session. Registration also will be conducted. To schedule a free physical, call Family Medicine at 624-2551.
