GLENVILLE -- Ada F. Greenleaf "Blair" Beard, 78, of Waverly, died at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at Sunbridge of Parkersburg following an extended illness.
She was born Sept. 24, 1921, in Gilmer County, a daughter of the late Calvin C. and Orpha Smith Greenleaf.
She was first married to Elbert Blair and later to Ernest Beard, both of whom preceded her in death.
Surviving are three daughters, Linda Blair Morgan, Waverly, Betty Blair Griffith, Mineral Wells, and Argent Jane Blair Coover, California; one sister, Frankie Jane Langford, Harrisville; three grandchildren, Shannon R. Hammer, Waverly, Benjamin Blair Morgan, Orlando, Fla., and Robby Griffith, Sandyville; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. Beard was a homemaker, a member of the Gilmer County Democratic Women and the Gilmer County Senior Citizens.
She was Methodist.
PENNSBORO -- James E. Beck, 79, of Pullman, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, in Parkersburg.
He was born on Sept. 29, 1920, near Oxford, Ritchie County, a son of the late Edward and Amanda Lula Martin Beck.
Surviving is his wife, Athlea Smith Beck.
Also surviving are four sons and daughters-in-law, Clem and Mary Beck, Frederick, Md., James A. and Virginia Beck, Pennsboro, Eddy and Brenda Beck, Pullman, and Earl and Donna Beck, Tollgate; one daughter, Julia Collins, Clarksburg; three brothers, Rev. Arden Beck, Belington, Gordie Beck, Clarington, Ohio, and John Beck, Carrollton, Ohio; one sister, Mae Dulaney, Waynesboro, Va.; and 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Kermit Beck.
Mr. Beck was a retired well tender, working primarily for Pennova Interests, Penn Resources and Joseph J. Lombardo Associates.
He was a former Ritchie County commissioner for 12 years and had served as president. He was instrumental in the start up of the Ritchie County Emergency Squad and the Pennsboro branch of the Ritchie County Library.
GRAFTON -- ClaraBelle Bolyard Bell, 77, of West Milford Street, Grafton, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at Grafton City Hospital following an extended illness.
She was born Feb. 23, 1922, in Newburg, a daughter of the late George Walter Bolyard and Electa Belle Fortney Bolyard.
Her husband, William Sanford Bell, whom she married April 16, 1938, preceded her in death on April 13, 1984.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Mary AvaDelle) Stemple, Thornton; two sons, David L. Bell and wife, Starr, Grafton, and Larry P. Bell and wife, Betty, Atlanta, Ga.; one sister, Mrs. Nobel (Ella Mae) Weaver, Rosewood Center, Grafton; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by an infant son, William T. Bell; four sisters, Mrs. Fayne (Nellie) Hardy, Mrs. Lonnie (Edith M.) Chipps, Mrs. Guy (Ethel K.) Ours and an infant, Mary Etta Bolyard; five brothers, Dayton O. Bolyard, Harold W. Bolyard, Gilbert C. Bolyard, Lester P. Bolyard, Arzie S. Bolyard; and one great-grandson, David Allan Bell.
Mrs. Bell was a housewife and Methodist.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday at the Bartlett Funeral Home, 202 McGraw Ave., Grafton. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. William Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Shay's Chapel Cemetery, Fellowsville.
BELINGTON -- Harrison William Cardwell, 74, a resident of 414 Hice St., Belington, died at 10:05 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at his home following an extended illness. Death was attributed to cancer.
He was born May 29, 1925, in North Wilkesboro, N.C., a son of the late Bynom and Francis Mary Jenkins Cardwell.
On Sept. 19, 1949, he married the former Sybil Spears, who preceded him in death on May 27, 1988.
Surviving are his companion, Edith Bennet, with whom he made his home; three sons, Bill Cardwell, Tucson, Ariz., Pete Cardwell, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps., and Ronny Cardwell Silcox, Belington; five daughters, Edna Armstrong, Belington, Wanda Shoemaker, Sandra Cardwell and Melissa Blue, all of Tucson; one sister, Belma Silcox, Ariz.; 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Glenn Jenkins and one sister, Little Stember.
Mr. Cardwell attended the schools of North Carolina and was a retired carpenter. He was Protestant.
HARRISVILLE -- Lester E. "Red" Chadock, 91, of Macfarlan, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg.
He was born in Macfarlan, March 27, 1908, a son of the late Charles and Sabina Nutter Chadock Stanley.
His wife, Myrtle Roberts Chadock, preceded him in death.
Surviving are two sons, Gene Chadock, Vienna, and Wayne "Bub" Chadock, Reno, Ohio; six daughters, Evelyn Sansom, Gunter, Texas, Freda Newbrough, Parkersburg, Mary Chadock and Noreta Murphy, both of Macfarlan, Sue Jones, Davisville, and Norma Graves, Scottsville, Ky.; 24 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren and 13 stepgreat-grandchildren; one brother, Shirley "Pood" Chadock, Parkersburg; two half brothers, Charles "Bud" Stanley, Massillon, and Argil Stanley, Wakeman, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by one son, Grant Chadock; one grandson, Roger Chadock; an infant great-grandson; three brothers, Carl, Martin and John; his stepfather, Joe Stanley; and one half sister, Hattie Stanley Eddy.
Mr. Chadock was a member of the Bethel Chapel United Methodist Church. He had worked as a drilling contractor for many years.
WEST UNION -- Marie Cole, 85, of Alum Bridge, died at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg, following an extended illness.
She was born Aug. 11, 1914, in Lewis County, a daughter of the late George Columbus Spray and Dora Lelie Rymer Spray.
Her husband, Edmond G. "Ed" Cole, whom she married Feb. 14, 1945, preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 1989.
Surviving are one daughter, Norma S. Bowyer, New Milton; four grandchildren, Marcella "Marcie" Yeater, West Union, Morgan's Run community, Melanie King, Santa Ana, Calif., Melinda Debner, Nevada, Iowa, and Michael Bowyer, New Milton; and two great-grandchildren, Amanda Dawn Yeater and Shane Yeater, both of West Union, Morgan's Run community.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, Mary Spray, who died in infancy.
Mrs. Cole was a member of the Women of the ELCA, the Fallen Timber Leopold CEOs and the St. Johannes Evangelical Lutheran Church.
She was very active in the St. Clara Organized community, was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing and flowers.
CLARKSBURG -- Blanche Devaughn Ferguson, 71, of 126 Tuna St., Clarksburg, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.
She was born in Marion County, Oct. 4, 1928, a daughter of the late Isaac H. Ansel and Goldie E. Howard Ansel.
Surviving are one son and a daughter-in-law, John and Lola Ferguson Jr., Clarksburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and John Hyde, Saltwell; one sister, Verna Ansel, Clarksburg; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Laura Ansel, Pearland, Texas; several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, Leroy Ansel.
Mrs. Ferguson was a charter member of the Clarksburg Nazarene Church. She graduated from Washington Irving High School and was a volunteer at the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in Clarksburg.
She was a member of the Peace Makers Quilting Club and the Navy Mothers Club.
Mrs. Ferguson retired from the former Brockway Glass Co. with 27 years of service, working in the packing department.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St., Clarksburg. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Gary D. Sidle presiding. Interment will be in the Floral Hills Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
SALEM -- James R. Garrett, 91, of University Park, Md., died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000.
He was born Aug. 31, 1908, in Pennsylvania, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Garrett.
His wife, Lula Dennison Garrett, preceded him in death on Oct. 14, 1991.
Surviving are two grandsons, David L. and Anthony R. Garrett and two great-grandchildren, Spencer and Olivia Garrett.
He was also preceded in death by one son, David L. Garrett, on Dec. 24, 1989.
Mr. Garrett was a retired patent examiner with the federal government.
Friends will be received from 4-6 p.m. on Friday at the Greathouse Funeral Home, Salem Chapel. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Ray French presiding. Interment will be in the Marshville Cemetery.
CLARKSBURG -- Velma E. Harvey, 59, of Indiana Avenue, Nutter Fort, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at her residence following an extended illness.
She was born in Clarksburg, Nov. 6, 1940, a daughter of Edna McNemar Kirkpatrick, who survives in Nutter Fort, and the late Hobert E. Harvey.
Also surviving are one half sister, Ines Hupp, Toronto, Ohio; several nieces and nephews; and a very close classmate, Nancy Pecera.
She was also preceded in death by one son.
Miss Harvey was a member of the Vincent Memorial United Methodist Church.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday at the Davis Funeral Home, 443 West Pike St., Clarksburg. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Edsil Bragg officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park.
CLARKSBURG -- Bona Floralese Lazier Poth, 77, of Box 528, Route 1, Mt. Clare, died at 4:15 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.
She was born in Bridgeport, Jan. 8, 1923, a daughter of the late William Holt Lazier and Elcie Floia Groghan Lazier.
Surviving is her husband, Pieter Poth Jr., whom she married Dec. 12, 1946.
Also surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Gloria Jean and Thomas Moon, Route 1, Box 328, Mt. Clare; two granddaughters, Summer Dawn and Stephanie Jean Moon; one brother and sister-in-law, Grannis and Edna Lazier, Cortland, Ohio; two sisters, Nola Coen, Cortland, and Wilma June Hane, Shalimar, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Geraldine Mae Poth, on March 10, 1977.
Mrs. Poth was a member of the Quiet Dell United Methodist Church, American Legion and National Rifle Association.
She was a 1941 graduate of Bridgeport High School and a graduate of West Virginia Business College.
During World War II she enlisted in the U.S. Navy WAVES. Following basic training at Hunter College in New York, she served as a Yeoman 2nd Class.
Mrs. Poth was an astute businesswoman and along with her husband, operated a successful farming operation.
Her varied hobbies included swimming, fishing, hunting, and music. She was a talented guitar and banjo player. She played lead guitar with small musical groups entertaining at reunions and other gatherings. As a young adult she had composed several songs.
Friends will be received from 4-9 p.m. today and Friday at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St. in Clarksburg. The funeral service will be conducted at noon on Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Mary Ellen Finnegan conducting the service. Entombment will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
GLENVILLE -- Carl William Smithson, 71, of Glenville, died at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, in the emergency room of St. Joseph's Hospital, Buckhannon, following an unexpected illness.
He was born Sept. 25, 1928, in Fayette County, a son of the late Owen and Dora Richmond Smithson.
On Oct. 25, 1950, he married Rosie McMillion Smithson, who survives.
Also surviving are one son, Carl Smithson Jr., Glenville; two daughters, Melinda Fitzpatrick, Glenville, and Anita Roberts, Cox's Mill; one brother, Danny Smithson, Cox's Mill; two sisters, Geraldine Crisp, Richmond, Va., and Joanna Acords, McConnellsville, Va.; two grandsons, four granddaughters and two great-grandsons.
He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Gina Logan; one brother, Earl Smithson; one sister, Jewell Hayes; and one granddaughter.
Mr. Smithson was owner of Smithson Brothers Well Service and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was Baptist.
WESTON -- Everett Ray Stutler, 61, of Route 4, Weston, Waldeck community, died at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at a farm near his home while feeding cattle as a result of a heart attack.
He was born May 24, 1938, in Gilmer County, a son of the late Dorsey G. Stutler and Virginia Cutright Stutler.
On Sept. 6, 1958, he married the former Effie Lou Curtis, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons and daughter-in-law, Tom and Jill Stutler, Weston, and Andy Stutler, Ravenna, Ohio; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Eddie (Debbie) Ellis, Jane Lew, Ms. Virginia Lou "Jenny" Duncan, Weston, and Mrs. Kevin (Wanda) Lewis, French Creek; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one brother, Russell W. Stutler, Lost Creek, and Mary K. Eakle, Lost Creek; several nieces and nephews; and an aunt and uncle, Jack and Betty Rush, Route 4, Weston; his in-laws, Clarence and Olive Curtis, Route 4, Weston, Waldeck community.
Mr. Stutler was retired from the Ace Tank Rental in Buckhannon with 10 years of service. He was Methodist.
Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. today at the Boyle Funeral Home, 322 Main Ave., Weston. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday in the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Russell Furr officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
