If 1996 is any indication, tonight should be busy at the Lewis County Courthouse.
Voter turnout during that presidential election was 72 percent in Lewis, county clerk Mary Lou Meyers said.
And early indications are that this year will be no different, she said.
"Judging from the amount of absentee ballots we've received, we should have a good turnout," Meyers said Monday.
Workers in county clerks offices around the state spent the final day before the election getting ready for the polls to open.
"It's been like a zoo here," she said.
Poll commissioners were in and out of the courthouse all day picking up their ballot boxes and other supplies, she said.
Polls in West Virginia will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. today, she said.
County clerks around the area have some reminders for those planning to vote:
First-time voters need to remember to bring a form of identification with them. It should include their names, birth dates and addresses, Meyers said.
Those who have moved into a different precinct since the last time they voted must vote at their new polling place, even if they have not completed a change of address form with the county clerks office, said Sylvia Basile, Harrison County clerk.
Such people will vote on challenged ballots that will be counted during the election canvass.
The votes of those who have moved but cast their ballots at their old precincts will not be counted, Basile said.
