by Randall Jett

CORRESPONDENT

WEST UNION -- Behind the strong inside play of Ashlea Bland and Erin Leech, Magnolia routed Doddridge County, 70-48, Tuesday.

The game was tied at 11 midway through the first quarter before Magnolia went on a 6-0 run to end the first.

Leech led the Blue Eagles, scoring eight of her 16 points in the first half to help give Magnolia a 30-21 halftime lead.

The Bulldogs (11-9) pulled to within four points, 30-26, with 7:21 remaining in the third quarter on Lori Trent's 3-pointer from the top of the key.

The game stayed close until Magnolia (10-10) went on a 14-0 run to lead 59-36 with six minutes remaining in the game.

Doddridge County never recovered.

"We didn't handle Magnolia's pressure very well early in the game," Doddridge County coach Craig Kellar said. "That was the biggest disappointment with our play.

"We executed much better against their press late in the game."

Trent led all scorers with 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while teammate Lisa Davis added 10 points for Doddridge County.

Bland led the Blue Eagles with 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, while teammates Ranna Rokles and Hannah Heinzman each scored 10 points.

"The kids worked really well together tonight," Magnolia coach Nikki Hardman said.

"They played defense aggressively and that was the key in the game."

n PHILIP BARBOUR 53, Robert C. Byrd 48: Philip Barbour used a 26-12 fourth quarter in a come-from-behind win over Robert C. Byrd.

The Colts (4-12, 4-6 Big 10) trailed 36-27 heading into the final quarter before the rally.

Amber Kelley and Tana Phillips each scored 12 points for Philip Barbour, while teammate Gina Ware added 11 points.
