BUCKHANNON -- After seven girls events and six boys events, Parkersburg's girls and Robert C. Byrd's boys held leads at the Region II Swimming Championships Wednesday night in Buckhannon.
Parkersburg, looking to dethrone four-time defending champion Bridgeport, held a 107-70 advantage going into the eighth event, the 200-yard freestyle relay. Robert C. Byrd, behind two victories from Chris Hagedorn, held a 51-49 lead over Jefferson. Still very much in the hunt for a regional boys crown are Bridgeport (44) and Parkersburg (42).
Several area swimmers pulled individual titles early in the meet. Hagedorn's victories came in the sprints, the 50 and 100-yard free, while teammate Benjamin Davis won the 100 butterfly.
Bridgeport's Kimberly Sickles won the 200 individual medley, and teammate Michele Knicely captured the 100 fly. Buckhannon-Upshur's Melissa Masuga raced to a win in the 50 free.
Complete coverage, including all area qualifiers, will appear in Thursday's Clarksburg Telegram and in Friday's Clarksburg Exponent.
