A 57-year-old Garrettsville, Ohio man died Thursday evening after the all-terrain vehicle he was riding overturned in Doddridge County.
Sometime between the hours of 7:30 and 8:00 p.m., Daniel C. Ash Sr. was riding his ATV on Harmony Road when the vehicle rolled, said Trooper Mark Waggamon of the West Union Detachment of the State Police.
When the family members he was staying with saw that Ash had been gone for some time, they went looking for him.
Relatives discovered his unconscious body pinned by the ATV against a tree in a wooded area, said Waggamon.
State police, Doddridge EMS, the Doddridge County coroner and the Greenwood Fire Department responded to the scene, said Waggamon.
Ash, who was not wearing a helmet, died as a result of his injuries. Waggamon believes the victim suffocated as a result of being pinned against a tree.
He was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:26 p.m., despite the efforts of Doddridge EMS to revive him, Waggamon said.
The accident remains under investigation.
