Audie Eugene 'Gene' Bennett
SHINNSTON -- Audie Eugene "Gene" Bennett, 72, of Rinehart community, died Monday, July 10, 2000, at the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Medical Center in Clarksburg, following a brief illness.
He was born May 11, 1928, in Harrison County, a son of the late Thomas R. and Leia Blanche Webb Bennett.
His wife of 45 years, Mary M. Shaw Bennett, whom he married Oct. 2, 1954, survives.
Also surviving are four sons, David, Larry, and Audie L. Bennett, all of Rinehart, and Edward J. Price, Hepzibah; two daughters, Mrs. Gary (Ruth) Sendling, Hepzibah, and Mrs. Robert (Jody) Dennison, Rinehart; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandson; and one sister, Ruby Fluharty, Wallace.
He was also preceded in death by one brother and two half sisters.
Mr. Bennett was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the U.S. Army. He was a coal miner, having retired from the Quarto No. 4 mine in Powhatan, Ohio, with more than 19 years in the mining industry.
He was a member of the UMWA Local 1785 in Powhatton Point, Ohio. He was a Baptist by faith.
Friends may call at the Dorsey Funeral Home, Shinnston, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today. Interment will be in the Bennett Cemetery, Big Elk.
KINGWOOD -- Naomi Mae Dilsworth, 61, of Bridgeport, formerly of Rowlesburg, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at her home after a long illness with the family in attendance.
She was born March 12, 1939, in Rowlesburg, a daughter of Jesse C. Buckingham of Clarksburg, and the late Margaret R. Buckingham.
Also surviving are four daughters and spouses, Diana L. "Dee" and Samuel Stonebraker, Morgantown, Mona Lisa and David Boyles, Parsons, Margaret J. "Maggi Jo" Dilsworth and husband, Louis Spears, Atlanta, Ga., and Heather D. and David Bradley, Columbus, S.C.; five sons, Lawrence J. Dilsworth Jr., Charleston, Howard L. Dilsworth, Reedsville, Richard R. Dilsworth, Bridgeport, Jon A. "Tony" and wife, Leann Taylor Dilsworth, Morgantown, and Thomas J. "Tommy" and wife, Cindy Bray Dilsworth, Phelan, Calif.; six brothers, Edward E. Buckingham, St. Louis, Mo., Benjamin J. "BJ" Buckingham, Rowlesburg, Charles W. Buckingham, Fairmont, David A. "Dead Eye" Buckingham, Rowlesburg, Francis J. Buckingham, Barnhart, Mo., and Ronald K. Buckingham, St. Louis, Mo.; 18 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one step great-grandchild and one adopted grandchild.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, Doris J. Hixenbaugh; and one granddaughter, Jolene R. Bohon.
Ms. Dilsworth was a homemaker. She was a loving mother and grandmother.
She was a member for 321Ú2 years of the World Wide Church of God in Clarksburg, the T.O.P.S. Chapter No. WV 169 in Clarksburg, a volunteer for the United Way and area schools including BSOA, GSA, Criss Cross, PTA and Band.
SPELTER -- Jane L. Forman, 78, of Spelter, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at United Hospital Center.
She was born May 22, 1922, a daughter of the late Homer and Essie Hess Hayes.
Surviving are one son, Terry Forman; one grandson, Corey Forman, North Port, Florida; and one sister, Betty L. Ward, Greenwood, S.C.
She was a 1940 graduate of Victory High School. She was an employee of Blands Drug Store and retired from W.T. Grant, after more than 22 years of service.
For many of us, she will be remembered for her time as an assistant to the Great Harry Blackstone, the magician who entertained the troops during World War II.
There will be a memorial service at the Veterans Memorial Park, Big Oaks Pavilion, Rt. 98, Clarksburg, on at 1 p.m. Friday.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to your local senior center or a charity of your choice.
CLARKSBURG -- Georgia Mae Holmes, 61, of North First Street, Clarksburg, died at 4:20 a.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2000, after a long illness.
She was born March 25, 1939, in Asheville, N.C., a daughter of the late George W. Workman and Lizzie M. Markus Workman Moore.
Her husband, William B. Holmes Sr., whom she married in 1957, preceded her in death March 14, 1992.
Surviving are three sons, William B. Holmes Jr., Donald W. and Nathan E. Holmes, all of Clarksburg; two grandsons, Donald W. Holmes Jr., and Daniel C. Holmes, both of Morgantown.
Mrs. Holmes was a clerk with JCPenny with 12 years of service. She was a former employee of Food Lion, Nutter Fort. She was a graduate of Dunbar High School in Fairmont.
She was a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Clarksburg, and the Welcome Baptist Church in Fairmont, where she taught Sunday School and was church secretary. She was also a member of the Lucinda Rose Auxiliary No. 573 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Family and friends will be received at the Davis Funeral Home, 443 West Pike St., Clarksburg, from 7-9 p.m. today and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, where a funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Ramona Woods officiating. Interment will be in the Stonewall Park Cemetery.
BUCKHANNON -- Edith A. Knicely, 95, of 21 Riley Heights, Buckhannon, died at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at her home.
She was born Oct. 31, 1904, at Indore, a daughter of the late Robert and Frances Brown Reedy.
Her first husband, David C. Keith, preceded her in death. Her second husband, Jim Knicely, also preceded her in death.
Surviving are five daughters, Helen Holcomb and Bonnie Haymes, both of Miami, Fla., Norma Copenhaver, Summersville, Ethel Andrews and Peggy Hall, both of Buckhannon; one son, Milroy Keith, Jefferson, Colo.; two stepsons, Herbert Knicely and Ronnie Hanshaw; three stepdaughters, Ruth Price, Gauley Bridge, Bea Morris and Edith Hall; one sister, Grace Stone, Indore; 25 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Rachel Keith; one stepson, Waldo Keith; four brothers and one sister.
Mrs. Knicely was a homemaker. She was a member of the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, Buckhannon.
She was very active in the Senior Center and was a member of AARP.
William Sidney 'Sid' McKown
CLARKSBURG -- William Sidney "Sid" McKown, 78, of 1031Ú2 Camden St., Clarksburg, did at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 12, 2000, in United Hospital Center.
He was born June 15, 1922, in Clarksburg, a son of the late William McKown and Mary E. Griffith McKown.
His wife, Christine "Teenie" Burdiss McKown, preceded him in death July 23, 1996.
Surviving are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Roger L. McKown, Denver, N.C., and Randy A. and Juanita McKown, Suds Run, Quiet Dell; four grandchildren, Shelly McKown, Clarksburg, Stacy Tennant, Jackson, Ga., Sonya Wilmoth, Lincolnton, N.C., and Lori Palmer, Willow Beach; four great-grandchildren, Tristin Gregory, Victoria Tennant, Ashley McKown and Andrea Palmer; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Arnold and Garold McKown.
Mr. McKown had attended the Evangelical Congregational Church, Oak Mound, Clarksburg. He had been employed by the former Lang Criss Box Factory and had retired as a driver for Eazor Express. He had also been maintenance superintendent for the Goff building.
Friends will be received at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St., Clarksburg, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today. A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home at 2 p.m. Friday with the Rev. O.D. Harman conducting. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.
SHINNSTON -- Katie M. Murray, 69, of Station Street, Shinnston, died at 11:20 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at her residence following an extended illness.
She was born May 29, 1931, at Chiefton, a daughter of the late Ralph and Julia Spatafore Serian.
Her husband, Jackson Murray, preceded her in death Jan. 1992.
Surviving are two daughters, Pamela K. Murray, Meadowbrook, and Tene K. Murray, Clarksburg; one son, Bernie L. Murray, Naples, Fla.; four grandchildren, J. J. Lester, Naples, Toni J. Stire, Gypsy, Chrissy DeMarco, Shinnston, and Alexandra Fazio, Monongah; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Myers, Havelock, N.C., and Bertha Anderson, Virginia Beach, Va.; and one brother, John Serian, Monongah.
Mrs. Murray was a homemaker.
At her request, her body will be cremated and there will be no public services. The Dorsey Funeral Home, Shinnston, is in charge of the arrangements.
BUCKHANNON -- James Dale Newcome, 73, of 105 Buckhannon Manor, Buckhannon, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at Louis A. Johnson V.A. Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 5, 1926, at Buckhannon, a son of the late Loat and Flossie Bean Newcome.
Surviving are one son, Donald Newcome, Gaines; one daughter, Donnas Sines, Cannon; two grandsons, Chad C. and James P. Newcome, both of Gaines; and three granddaughters, Kasie Shannon, Amanda R. and Jennifer L. Sines, all of Cannon.
He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Carl, Chet, Lowell and Bill Newcome.
Mr. Newcome was a postal employee. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3663.
CLARKSBURG -- Mr. Michael W. "Bro" Odom Sr., 47, of Salem, died at 1:42 a.m. Wednesday, July 12, 2000, in the United Hospital Center.
He was born Oct. 29, 1952, in Cleveland, Ohio, a son of the late W.W. Odom and Mary Colleen Odom.
His wife, Lela F. Queen Odom, survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Michael W. Odom Jr. and Roland E. Odom, both at home; three daughters, Karen C. Odom and Colleen N. Odom, both of Cleveland, Ohio, and Mary K. Odom at home; one brother, Kenneth Odom, Brunswick, Ohio; three sisters, Mrs. Wendal (Joyce) Hubbard, Alabama, Mrs. Gerald (Linda) DeBaltzo, Cleveland, Ohio, and Mary L. Odom, Florida; four grandchildren, Mary J. and Joey Odom, both of Cleveland, Roger Odom, Anmoore, and Alex Odom, Stonewood; and a good friend, Wayne Quick.
Friends will be received at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St., Clarksburg, form 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Homer Ham presiding. There will be a gathering of family and friends immediately following the service at the Nutter Fort Community Center.
CLARKSBURG -- Miss Fern Jean Quinaut, 95, formerly of 214 Walnut St., Clarksburg, died at 6:50 a.m. Wednesday, July 12, 2000, in the Clarksburg Continuous Care Nursing Home following an extended illness.
She was born Oct. 28, 1904, in Arnold, Pa., a daughter of the late Alfred and Augustine Quinaut.
Surviving are one niece, A.J. Montgomery, South Carolina; and one great-niece, Stephanie Fleming, Florida.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, Raymond A. Quinaut.
Miss Quinaut was a Catholic. She was a graduate of Victory High School in the class of 1923.
There is no visitation and a private interment will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Davis-Weaver Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
CLARKSBURG --Robert A. Swain, 79, of 304 Ohio Ave., Nutter Fort, died at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 9, 1920, in Fairmont, a son of the late Alphonse R. Swain and Hazel V. Griffith Swain.
Twice married he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorna L. Herring Swain on April 16, 1996, and is survived by his second wife, Lorraine Tharp Gain Swain.
Also surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Michael Robert and Sharman Swain, 120 Cimarron Rd., Clarksburg; two daughters, Sharon L. Hardman, Saltwell, Clarksburg; and Barbara K. Holmes, Charleston; one stepson and step daughter-in-law, Bradley and Cindy Gain, Rockford; a stepdaughter and husband, Dianne and Jim Trisler, Spartanburg, S.C.; one sister, Patricia M. Jenkins, Rockville, Md.; five grandchildren, John Hardman, Darren Holmes, Debbie Romano, Brian Holmes and Kevin Hardman; three great-grandchildren, Sierra and Tyler Romano and Halie Hardman; five step grandchildren, Scott and Mike Trisler, Amy Ganoe, Jason and Elizabeth Gain; and two step great-grandchildren, Patrick Trisler and Christopher Ganoe.
Mr. Swain was a member of Vincent Memorial United Methodist Church and he was choir director of his church.
He was a member and Past Master of Hermon Lodge No. 6, A.F. and A.M. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and was a member of Nemesis Temple of Shrine, Parkersburg. He was a past president of local chapter No. 580, American Federation of Musicians. He was a member of the Shrine Dixieland Band and an original member of the local dance band, "Pastels".
He was a former director of the Johnstown Concert Band, director of the Clarksburg Symphonic Band and a member of the Shinnston Concert Band. He had been a volunteer to the music departments of Robert C. Byrd and Liberty high schools.
He was a 1941 graduate of Victory High School. He was a U.S. Navy Air Corps veteran of World War II. He had retired from PPG Industries after 30 years of service.
Friends will be received at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St., Clarksburg, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in the Vincent Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. D. D. Meighen conducting. Mr. Swain's body will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to the service. Entombment will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

PINE GROVE -- Stacy Lynn Tedrow, 21 months, of Smithfield, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at West Virginia University Hospital in Morgantown.
She was born Oct. 22, 1998, at Clarksburg, a daughter of John C. and Sheila J. Quinn Tedrow of Smithfield.
Also surviving are one brother, John C. Tedrow Jr. at home; her maternal grandparents, David and Shirley Quinn, Smithfield; her paternal grandmother, Ilene Tedrow, Littleton; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Charles Tedrow.
WESTON -- James William Vandervork Sr., 97, of Crestview Manor Nursing Home, Jane Lew, W.Va.; formerly of McGuire Park, died at 7:40 a.m. Wednesday, July 12, 2000, in Crestview Manor Nursing Home following an extended illness. Born on April 19, 1903, in Pocahontas County, W.Va.; he was a son of James Paul Vandervork, who died in 1905 at the age of 30, and Bueana (Woofter) Vandervork, who died in 1934 at the age of 46. His wife of seventy-two years, Edith (Steele) Vandervork, survives.
Survivors include one son, James William Vandervork Jr. of Buckhannon, W.Va.; one grandson, James Brent Vandervork of California; three great-grandsons, Joshua, James Brent and Wade Vandervork, all of California; niece, Rosemary, Allman of Good Hope; one great-nephew, Tim Allman of Good Hope, W.Va.; two great-nieces, Cathy Woodson of Fairmont, W.Va., and Beth Armentrout of Good Hope, W.Va.; three great-great-nephews; four great-great-nieces; and two great-great-great-nieces.
Mr. Allman was preceded in death by two sisters, Justine Gipe and Virginia Vandervork.
Mr. Allman was a member and elder of many years of First Presbyterian Church in Weston. He was a graduate of Weston High School and a member of the football team. He was employed for several years with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in Weston, and Buckhannon; and retired from Equitable Life Insurance Company in 1970 with thirty-five years of service as an area manager.
Friends may call at the First Presbyterian Church, 312 Main Ave., Weston, on Friday, July 14, 2000, from 12:00 p.m. (Noon) until 2:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 14, 2000, from the First Presbyterian Church with Reverend David Krum officiating. Interment will follow in the Machpelah Cemetery in Weston. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 312 Main Avenue, Weston, WV 26452. Gladys Ellen Cooper Williams
BELINGTON -- Gladys Ellen Cooper Williams, 90, a former resident of Harding and more recently of the Swisher Personal Care Home, Beverly, for the past 21Ú2 years died at 9:43 p.m. Monday, July 10, 2000, at the home. She had been in failing health for the past two years.
She was born Jan. 25, 1910, in Leadmine community, Tucker County, a daughter of the late Charles and Sarah Alice Dumire Cooper.
Her husband, Jacob Spottswood Williams, whom she married Sept. 26, 1925, preceded her in death in 1986.
Surviving are one son, Marshall S. Williams and wife, Bernice, Weaver community; two daughters, S. Lorraine Row, Tuscon, Ariz., and Louwana S. Mock and husband, William, Greensburg, Pa.; three sisters, Arlene McDonald, Bridgeport, Katherine Ware and Hope Caplinger, both of Elkins; 17 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two sons, Robert Williams, and one infant; three brothers; five sisters; and two infant siblings.
Mrs. Williams attended the schools of Barbour County. She was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church at Junior and a homemaker.
