Obituaries for Friday, Dec. 7, 2001

Emery A. 'Red' Baughman

CLARKSBURG -- Emery A. "Red" Baughman, age 81, of Nellas Nursing Home, Elkins, formerly of Nutter Fort, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, in the Davis Memorial Hospital, Elkins.

He was born in Webster Springs, WV, on Oct. 11, 1920, a son of the late Burley M. Baughman and Selestia Hamrick Baughman. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Frances Baughman; two sons, David L. Baughman, Wilsonburg, Gary L. Baughman, Florida; two daughters, Donna Sue Sheldon, Syracuse, NY, Cheryl Darlene Banish, Port Charlotte, FL; one brother, Ernest L. Baughman, Clarksburg; eleven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Velma Baughman and Vermon Stansberry.

Mr. Baughman was Methodist by faith. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II, and he was a retired truck driver. He served with the American Legion all sports youth.

In 1947, he started umpiring primarily softball leagues at the former St. Bridgett's Field in Stonewood and officiated basketball in Harrison County youth leagues. He was inducted in the Umpire Hall Of Fame. Favorite quote heard time and again from "Red" -- "I haven't met a boy or girl I didn't like."

Friends may call at the McGlumphy Funeral Home/Chapel from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be conducted in the McGlumphy Church Chapel Saturday at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. O.D. Harmon officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

Genevieve M. Butcher

GLENVILLE -- Genevieve M. Butcher, age 89, of College St., Glenville, W.Va., departed this life at 1 a.m. Wednesday, December 5, 2001, at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center, Glenville, following an extended illness.

She was born May 15, 1912, at Lumberport, Harrison County, the daughter of the late Brice E. and Edna Martin Manning.

A graduate of Lumberport High School, her early formal education began at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, where she earned a B.S. degree. A masters degree and Emeritus Graduate Honor were obtained from the University of Michigan. She also attended Duke University and Southwestern Theological Seminary.

Her teaching career began at Sand Fork High School and continued when she assumed a position with Glenville State College in Business Education and Administration. While at Glenville State she was the organizer and advisor for the Alpha Delta Epsilon Business Fraternity. An international teaching career, led her to three continents, Technical College, Ibadan, Nigeria; The University of Can Tho, Can Tho, South Vietnam; and Hong Kong Baptist College, Hong Kong.

Mrs. Butcher held memberships in numerous clubs and organizations as follows: West Virginia Association of Retired Teachers, 50-year member of Order of the Eastern Star #90, life member of Delta Pi Epsilon (a national honorary professional graduate society in business education), member of Glenville 1st Baptist Church, member of Circle #2.

She was a former Sunday School teacher for the College level class, Women's Bible Class and Bible School teacher.

She was a former president of the Women's Bible Sunday School Class and Spiritual Growth Chairman of ABW (American Baptist Women Ministries).

Mrs. Butcher was married to Roland Butcher on December 19, 1941, and he preceded her in death in November of 1961.

Surviving are 1 daughter and son-in-law, Jorene and Carl Armour of Glenville, W.Va.; 1 grandson, Carl R. Armour of Grand Fork, North Dakota; 1 granddaughter, Jennie L. Roland of Campbell, California.

Mrs. Butcher was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by four brothers.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 8, 2001, at Glenville 1st Baptist Church, Glenville, with the Rev. Robert Nicholas officiating. Burial will follow in the Meadow Lane Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, December 7, 2001, at the Ellyson Mortuary Inc., Glenville, W.Va., and one hour prior to services at the church.

Helen Louise Pierce

SHINNSTON -- Helen Louise Pierce, 65, of Morgantown, died at 7:17 p.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2001, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, following an extended illness. She was born at Clarksburg, December 18, 1935, a daughter of the late Artie Forrest Pierce and Dessie Merriman Pierce Cornell. Surviving are 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Francie and Bruce Grimes, Shinnston, Valinda and Jess Wood, Fairmont; 4 sons, Jason Alan O'Dell, Jeremy Scott O'Dell, Charles Lee O'Dell, Isaac Abraham O'Dell, all of Morgantown; 1 sister and brother-in-law, Alice "Fanny" and Ritchie Greathouse, Ravenswood; 1 brother and sister-in-law, Randal and Pricilla Pierce, Sun Valley; 4 grandchildren, Chad Alan Grimes, Shinnston, Mrs. Wayne (Cynthia) Baker, Shinnston, Cortlan Reed, Jason Elliot O'Dell, both of Morgantown; 2 great-grandchildren, Mavrick Trenton Grimes Altovilla, Sabrina Baker, both of Shinnston; 4 nieces and 1 nephew and many special friends. She was also preceded in death by 1 brother, Forrest Pierce and her step-father, Homer Cornell. Ms. Pierce was a homemaker and a member of the Reynoldsville Baptist Church.

Friends may call at the Dorsey Funeral Home in Shinnston, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 8, with Pastor Ryan G. Lantz officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

Sylvia Marie Ramsey

SHINNSTON -- Sylvia Marie Ramsey, 75, of Enterprise, died at 5:35 a.m. Thursday, December 6, 2001, at her residence following an extended illness.

She was born January 13, 1927, at Lumberport, a daughter of the late Carl and Vonnie Davis Shreves.

Mrs. Ramsey is survived by 3 sons, Dennis Ramsey, St. Louis, MO, Donald Ramsey, Enterprise, Chad Ramsey, Core; 2 daughters, Nancy Bise, Morgantown, Cathy Nutter, Washington.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Marguerite McIntire.

Mrs. Ramsey was a homemaker. She was Protestant by faith.

Friends may call at the Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston, on Saturday from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, noon-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. on Monday. Interment will follow at the Lumberport Lions Club Cemetery.

Beatrice Lunceford Shaver

SUTTON -- Beatrice Lunceford Shaver, 82, of Sutton, died peacefully at Braxton County Memorial Hospital December 3, 2001, after an extended illness. She was born February 4, 1919, in Replete, WV, the daughter of the late Frederick B. and Virginia Samples Lunceford. She was a Methodist by faith and supported the war effort by working at Goodyear Aircraft, Akron, OH, during World War II.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Victor Shaver, who died January 26, 1995; one brother, Victor Lunceford; and two sisters, Garnett Coffman and Geneva Robinson.

A loving mother and grandmother, she will be sadly missed by her daughter Mavadell Skeen of Bluefield, VA; son-in-law Billy Skeen of Princeton, WV; grandchildren William Jason Skeen and wife Melinda Wang of Export, PA, and Sarah Elizabeth Skeen of Radford, VA. She is also survived by one brother, Edward Lunceford of Hacker Valley, WV; one sister Ina Gae Hinkle of Hacker Valley, WV; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 10-11 a.m. at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton, Saturday, December 8, 2001. Immediately following the visitation there will be a graveside service at Radabaugh Cemetery, near Hacker Valley, WV, with Rev. Bill Griffin officiating. Eulogy will be given by Sharon Gaston.

James Scott 'Jimmy' Skinner Jr.

CLARKSBURG -- James Scott "Jimmy" Skinner Jr., age 24, Route 1, Box 49 C, Lost Creek, WV, died Thursday morning, December 6, 2001, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Jimmy was born in Clarksburg, July 24, 1977.

He is survived by his parents, James Scott and Vicki Lynn Wilfong Skinner, and a sister, Mandy Michelle Skinner, all of Route 1, Lost Creek; his fiancee, Jessica Mazza, Bridgeport, WV; also surviving are his paternal grandmother, Antoinette "Toni" Skinner, Mount Clare, WV; his maternal grandmother, Shirley Everett, Lost Creek, WV; paternal great grandmother, Mae Mano, Mount Clare; and his maternal great grandmother, Beatrice "Biddie" Wilfong, Duck Creek; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Don Peck Skinner and Roger Kermit Wilfong, and his great grandfathers, Jim Mano and Ted Wilfong.

He was a 1995 graduate of South Harrison High School, where he had excelled in athletics and was named all-county and all-state in football, baseball and wrestling.

Jimmy was a "biker" enthusiast and enjoyed leisure time with his Harley Davidson and he also was an intense hunter and fisherman.

He was employed by the Green River Group, Fairmont, WV.

Friends will be received at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main Street, Clarksburg, from noon until 9 p.m. Friday.

A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home Saturday, December 8, 2001, at 11 a.m., with the Reverend Frank Carson presiding.

Interment will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
