CUMBERLAND, MD -- Roy F. Athey, 88, of 11407 Old Mt. Pleasant Rd, Cumberland, MD, died Thursday, December 6, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born March 11, 1913, in Moscow Mills, MD, he was the son of the late Francis Irving Athey and Irene Beatrice (Clark) Athey-Ayers.
Mr. Athey was a retired Machinist Instructor at Vo-Tech. He was a machinist for: Celanese Fibers Corp. of America; Allegany Ballistics Laboratory; Allegany Instrument; National Jet Corp.; Smith Engineering, LaVale; Beckners Machinery, Piedmont; and the Allegany Trade School in the evenings. He was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, Pleasant Grove Methodist Men's Group, Charter Member of Baltimore Pike Fire Dept., Frostburg SCAMPS (a senior citizens group), Seniors Sunday Night Bowling League, the Gas Company Bowling League, Bedford Valley Senior Citizens, and the Centreville and Frostburg Senior Citizens.
Roy enjoyed participating in many activities. He traveled to compete in the Senior Olympics and won First Place several times for pitching horseshoes. He was very active in area bowling leagues, enjoyed dancing with his wife every Saturday night for years, and also enjoyed playing cards.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Rita N. (Nave) Athey, Cumberland; a son, Colvin R. Athey and wife Linda, Cumberland; two brothers, Earl "Bub" Athey and wife Ruth, Osbourne Ayers, both of Cumberland; two granddaughters, Cheryl L. Turner and husband Gary, Corriganville, Pamela Athey/Sanchez and husband Manny, Germantown, MD; three great-grandchildren, Forrest Turner, Seth and Cody Sanchez.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, on Saturday from 2-4 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Lee Brotemarkle officiating.
Interment will be in Union Cemetery in Centreville, PA.
Pallbearers will be Ronald Athey, Danny Athey, Manny Sanchez, Forrest Turner, Seth Sanchez and Dale Pierce.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Adolph Norris, Troy Huffman, Harmon Robinette, Rick Ware and Don Roth.

PENNSBORO -- Rita S. Bush, age 82, of Luray, VA, formerly of Holbrook Community, West Union, WV, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, in Winchester, VA. She was born on April 29, 1919, at St. Clara in Doddridge County, WV.
Mrs. Bush was a homemaker, a graduate of the former West Union High School and a member of the Walnut Grove United Methodist Church.
She is survived by sons, Clarence I. Bush Jr., Mufreesboro, NC, and Joseph A. Bush, Luray, VA; daughter, Frances Gaston, Parkersburg, WV; sisters, Irene Schulte, St. Clara, WV, and Rosalia Rupert, Grove Community, New Milton, WV; and 5 grandchildren.
Mrs. Bush was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Irvin Bush; brothers, Joe, Matthew and William Schulte; and her parents, Christian Andrew and Celia Frances Krehbuhl Schulte.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, from the McCullough-Rogers Funeral Home, Pennsboro, WV, with the Rev. Harlan Hodge officiating. PANAMA CITY, FL -- Mr. Robert E. "Bob" Gall, age 67, of Lynn Haven, Fla., passed away Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, in Birmingham, Ala. He was born in Morgantown, W.V., and had lived in Lynn Haven, Fla., for 27 years, moving there from Charleston, W.V.
Mr. Gall was Director of the Planning and Development Division for the State of West Virginia, retiring in 1991.
He was the former Director of Religious Education for the Clarksburg, W.V., First United Methodist Church and was also a member of the St. Andrew United Methodist Church.
Mr. Gall served as the Callaway City Manager from 1978 until 1980. He was very active in the Civil Air Patrol and was named the Senior Member of the Civil Air Patrol for the State of Florida for the year 1980.
Mr. Gall is survived by his wife, Betty Gall of Lynn Haven. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Doudon Gall. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Martha Thorne and her husband Glenn of Colonial Heights, Va.; a niece, Beth Saunders and her husband Jim of Colonial Heights, Va.; a grand-niece, Kelly Walker of Orlando; and an uncle, Edward McKown of Port Charlotte, Fla.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at St. Andrew United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ed Britton officiating. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will include members of the Prime 55 Advisor Board at People's First Bank, William Lilleston and Dr. Ronald Sinicrope. Eleanor Louise Channell McManus
ELKINS -- Eleanor Louise Channell McManus, age 97 years, a well-known business woman, a resident of Elkins, West Virginia, and a patient at Nella's Nursing Home at Crystal Springs, departed this life at 7:47 p.m. Thursday, December 6, 2001, at the Davis Memorial Hospital Emergency Room. She had been in declining health.
She was born on Thursday, October 27, 1904, at Huttonsville, WV, a daughter of the late Enoch W. Channell and Eliza Wamsley Channell. During 1929, at Ann Arbor, Michigan, she was married to James Patrick Leo "Mac" McManus, who preceded her in death on April 14, 1972. Surviving are a nephew, Russell H. Channell, Charleston, WV. She was preceded in death by one brother, Carl Wamsley Channell; two nephews, Samuel Ward Channell and Carl Russell Channell.
Eleanor was a graduate of Elkins High School with the Class of 1921 and attended Davis and Elkins College. She graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in Home Economics, and completed post-graduate training at the Merrill Palmer Institute of Social Work in Detroit, MI. While studying in Detroit, MI, she worked for the city as a social worker.
Upon returning to Elkins, she worked with the family-owned Channell Grocery Company, and then owned and operated a private kindergarten until 1941. She was co-owner and manager, along with her husband, of the McManus Office Supply and McManus Gift Shop, and operated the Faraway Hills Inn at Beverly, WV, from the late 1950's until the late 1970's. She was also instrumental in developing the style and elegance of the Elkins Motor Lodge.
She was a former Assistant Director of the Mountain State Forest Festival Queen's Court in 1937 and 1938, and Director of the Queen's Court during 1939, 1940 and 1941. She was a past President and life-member of the Elkins Women's Club, the American Association of University Women and the Elkins Business and Professional Women's Club. She was an active member of the Democratic Committee of Randolph County for many years.
She was a member of the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Circle No. 2 of the church.
Friends will be received at the Lohr-Barb-Vance Funeral Home on Sunday, December 9, 2001, from 4-6 p.m. On Monday, Mrs. McManus will be moved to the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church, where funeral services will be at 1 p.m. The Reverend Jeff Falter will officiate and entombment will follow at the Maplewood Memorial Mausoleum at Elkins, West Virginia. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorial contributions to the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church, 450 Randolph Avenue, Elkins, West Virginia 26241.

JANE LEW -- Madge Bush Neely, 93, of Main Street, Jane Lew, died at her home Thursday, December 6, 2001, at 7:45 a.m.
She was born at Tanner, Gilmer County, October 22, 1908, the daughter of the late Edward Newton and Leona Wilson Bush. She was married to Walter Neely Jr., who died October 23, 1944. She is survived by one son, William Neely of Jane Lew; five grandchildren, Michael Neely of Jane Lew, Jodi Neely-Ritz of Gainesville, Florida, Walter Neely III of Lumberport, Annamaria Neely of Orlando, Florida, Susan DesJardens of Naples, Florida; four great- grandchildren; one great-great- grandchild.
Three sisters and three brothers preceded her in death.
Mrs. Neely was a graduate of Weston High School in 1926, had been on the Election Board at Jane Lew for more than 25 years and was a member of the Jane Lew Kitchen Band. A former member of the Jane Lew City Council, she was a 63-year member of Good Hope Chapter No. 109, Order of Eastern Star, and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Jane Lew, where she was a member of the Church Choir for 63 years.
Friends will be received at the Morris Funeral Home, Jane Lew, Saturday afternoon from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Jane Lew, with Rev. Ronald Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the Broad Run Cemetery. Good Hope Chapter No. 109, Order of Eastern Star, will hold memorial services at the funeral home Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m.

SALEM -- Otis T. Nicholson, 84, of Hepzibah, formerly of New Milton, died in the Weirton, WV, Medical Center December 4, 2001, following an extended illness.
He was born October 20, 1917, in Doddridge County, the son of the late Lloyd E. and Mary C. Dennison Nicholson. His wife, Marjorie M. Kesling Nicholson, died in 1996.
Surviving are two sons and their spouses, Joe and Teresa Nicholson of Hepzibah, Randy and Gwen Nicholson of Meathouse Fork; one daughter, Mrs. William (Janice) Zeigler, Weirton; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Darrell Nicholson, an infant daughter, Debra Nicholson and by an infant grandson, Jeremiah Nicholson.
He was a member of the Union Mission Church and a retired employee of PPG Industries, having twenty three years service, and was a Veteran of The U.S. Navy, serving during World War II.

CLARKSBURG -- Alfred H. Norman Jr., of Custer Addition, died Friday, December 7, 2001, at the United Hospital Center following an extended illness.
He was born in Zanesville, Ohio, the son of the late Alfred Hunter and Mary Evangeline Keener Norman.
He was married to Virginia Shrader Norman on May 29, 1925, who preceded him in death on February 16, 1999.
Mr. Norman is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Gary Wayne and Donna Norman, Radford, Virginia; two grandsons, Russell "Rusty" Norman and Joyce, Kristopher "Kris" Norman and Denise; and one brother, Gerald E. "Gene" Norman, Clarksburg.
He was also preceded in death by one sister, Alfreda Justine Norman Lightner.
Mr. Norman was a retired Accountant with Anchor Hocking with 32 years of service; worked for Davis Funeral Home for 12 years, where he was a faithful and loyal employee; a former member of Mount Clare Lions Club; did accounting for several local Water Boards; served in the European Theatre in Infantry and Quarter Master from November 14, 1944, to August 5, 1946; and was discharged as a Technician 4th Grade.
Mr. Norman was a member of the Evangelical Congregational Church, where he served as Church Treasurer. CLARKSBURG -- Mary Elizabeth Pernell, 91, of Williams Avenue, Clarksburg, died December 7, 2001, at a personal care home following an extended illness.
Mrs. Pernell was a homemaker. She was born in Clarksburg, WV, on May 1, 1910, a daughter of the late Graham and Sophia Kirby.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Owen Pernell, on April 19, 1970.
Surviving are one daughter, Elizabeth "Patty" McCullough of Quiet Dell; one sister, Betty Swartz of Dublin, Ohio; three grandchildren, Daniel Kain and wife, Rosemary, Bruce McCullough and Allison McCullough; two great-grandchildren, Murphy Kain and Ashleigh Magee; one long-time companion, Paul Rogers; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by one son, Bernard "Bud" Pernell; and one sister, Elda Kingma.
Mrs. Pernell was a member of the North View United Methodist Church. After World War II, she became active in the United States Army Mothers Organization. During the war she formed the first Girl Scout troop in North View.
She served many years as a scout leader and camp counselor at Camp Horseshoe and was nicknamed "Cricket." She was a charter member of the Woman's Club of Nutter Fort, a member of the North Central West Virginia Doll Club, and enjoyed collecting baby dolls.
For fifteen years she taught physical fitness at the Clarksburg YWCA. She was a member of the "Over the Rainbow" dancers from the Harrison County Senior Citizens. Mrs. Pernell served as Bible school director for 15 years in the 1950s and 1960s for the United Methodist Church in North View, where she was a member.
At age 75 she took up golfing and along with her companion, Paul, was a member of the Clarksburg Country Club. She belonged to a trail club and enjoyed hiking and being in the mountains.
She was also a member of the B&O Railroad Auxiliary.

SHINNSTON -- Helen Louise Pierce, 65, of Morgantown, died at 7:17 p.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2001, in the Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, following an extended illness.
She was born at Clarksburg, December 18, 1935, a daughter of the late Artie Forrest Pierce and Dessie Merriman Pierce Cornell.
Funeral services will be held at Dorsey Funeral Home in Shinnston at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 8, with Pastor Ryan G. Lantz officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

SHINNSTON -- Charles R. Sears, 55, of Shinnston, died at 3:22 p.m. Thursday, December 6, 2001, in the United Hospital Center, Clarksburg, following a brief illness.
He was born at Webster Springs, December 14, 1945, a son of Tony Rose, Shinnston, and the late Oma Sears Rose.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Karen D. Laughlin Sears, whom he married January 30, 1965; 3 sons, Scott Sears, David Sears, Nick Sears, all of Shinnston; 4 grandchildren, Amber Sears, Shalynn Sears, Shyann Sears, Colton Sears; 2 brothers, Nicholas Sears, Omaha, Nebraska, and Joe Sears, Shinnston.
Mr. Sears was a coal miner for the Consolidation Coal Company, Robinson Run Mine, with 33 years service.
He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America, Local No. 1501, the Sons of the American Legion, Post No. 31, the Moose Lodge, all of Shinnston, and the Meuse Argonne Post No. 573, V.F.W., Clarksburg, He enjoyed riding motorcycles and camping.

Mary Kathryn 'Toots' Secreto
CLARKSBURG -- Mrs. Mary Kathryn "Toots" Secreto, age 72, of Meadowbrook Road, Bridgeport, died at 12 noon Thursday, December 6, 2001, in the Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown, from injuries sustained from an automobile accident in April.
She was born in Clarksburg on May 30, 1929, a daughter of the late Sam Pulice, Sr. and Mary Leonette Pulice.
Her husband, Frank Secreto, whom she married on June 23, 1955, survives.
Also surviving are two sons and daughters in law, Tim and Cathy Secreto, Clarksburg, Patrick and Veronica Secreto, Bridgeport; two daughters, Mrs. Mike (Susan K. Secreto) Gaus, Bridgeport, Mrs. Carl (Dianne Secreto) Mazzo, Bridgeport; three brothers, Sam Pulice, Reading, PA, John Pulice, Dearborn, MI, Tom Pulice, Bridgeport; two sisters, Mary Fazzini, OH, Rose Pulice Danes, Clarksburg; four grandchildren, Anthony James Jones, Nicholas Frank Secreto, James Gregory Secreto and Mary Kathryn Delores Mazzo; and a mother in law, Mary Evelyn Secreto, Hepzibah.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, James Pulice, Joe Pulice and Frank Pulice.
Mrs. Secreto was a member of the Christian Assembly Church, Nutter Fort, where she served faithfully as Deaconess and in the church choir.
She worked for her father's business, Main Street Grocery, before graduating from R.W. High School. She was a resident of DeSalles Hall until receiving her degree in nursing at the St. Mary's School of Nursing after which she was employed by the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Hospital for twenty-two years, the Taylor County Health Department for twenty years and was currently working with Senior Care at the Harrison County Senior Citizens.
Friends will be received at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main Street from 4-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday 1-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 10, 2001, in the Christian Assembly Church, Nutter Fort, with Pastor Frederick Daniel Aves presiding. Interment will be in the Shinnston Masonic Cemetery.
Mrs. Secreto will lie in state at the church 1 hour prior to the service.

SHINNSTON -- Ronald L. Starkey, 65, of Route 2, Bridgeport, died at 5 a.m. Friday, December 7, 2001, at his residence following a brief illness.
He was born at Rinehart, March 11, 1936, a son of Nellie Edgell Starkey, Lumberport, and the late Burkley Starkey.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Wilma Jean Sturm Starkey, whom he married December 25, 1954; 1 son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Sophie Starkey, Ann Arbor Trail, Michigan; 4 daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Jerry Hustead, Lumberport, Susan Marra, Bridgeport, Rhonda and James Hamilton, Bridgeton, New Jersey, Denise and Kevin Thomas, Bridgeport; 9 grandchildren, Melissa Hustead, Federal Way, Washington, Brian Hustead, Jamie Marria, both of Bridgeport, Leslie Marra, Morgantown, Frankie Marra III, Shinnston, Justin Hayes, Millville, New Jersey, Amie Hayes, Bridgeton, New Jersey, Benjamin Thomas and Nicholas Thomas, both of Bridgeport; 1 sister and brother-in-law, Nola and Robert Bacorn, Denver, Colorado; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by 1 granddaughter, Amien Leigh Starkey.
Mr. Starkey retired from Lockeed-Martin, with 34 years service. He was a member of the Jewel City Church, Shinnston, the St. John's Lodge #24, A.F.&A.M., Shinnston, and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. He was a 1954 graduate of Lumberport High School and enjoyed traveling and being with his family. He also enjoyed walking at the Mall and riding bikes on the Rails to Trails, reading and gardening.

WESTON -- Betty Louise Waggy, 68, of Rock Cave, WV, formerly of Weston, WV, died at 12 p.m. on Thursday, December 6, 2001, following an extended illness. Born on November 4, 1933, in Gilmer County, WV, she was a daughter of the late John Westfall and Sylvia (Martin) Westfall, who resides in Weston, WV. On November 4, 1951, she married Ivan Hobert Waggy, who survives.
Survivors include one daughter, Caroline Carpenter of Rock Cave, WV; four sons, Roy Waggy, Buckhannon, WV, Ralph, Ronnie and Phillip Waggy, all of Weston, WV; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one brother, Robert Westfall of Weston, WV; and two sisters, Jane Linger of Weston, WV, and Sue Knight of TN.
She was preceded in death by one son, Ivan Junior Waggy, and one brother, Jack Westfall.
Mrs. Waggy was retired from the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital with over twenty years service in the housekeeping department.
There will be no visitation or funeral service. At the request of the deceased, her body was cremated.

CLARKSBURG -- Rose Alice Yochym, 77, of Route 1, Clarksburg, died December 6, 2001, at her residence following an extended illness.
Mrs. Yochym was a homemaker. She was born in Radcliff, PA, the daughter of the late Virginia Gilmore Yochym and step-daughter of the late Joseph J. Yochym.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Yochym, on March 13, 1990.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Donna L. Yochym of Davidson Run, Clarksburg; one daughter Marietta J. Yochym of Clarksburg; two sisters, Barbara Weber, Clarksburg, and Frances Bales, Paris, Kentucky; five grandchildren, Jason Williams, Larenda "Brooke" Yochym, Quinn Yochym, Gariann Yochym, and Charly "Alex" Yochym; three great-grandchildren, Chelsea Williams, Preston Williams and Alec Yochym; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by one son, Gary Yochym, and one brother, Ed Picklesimer. Mrs. Yochym was Protestant by faith and affiliated with the Abundant Life Church.
