Obituaries for February 27, 2000

William C. Baber II

CLARKSBURG -- William C. Baber, 59, of 119 Hartland Avenue, Clarksburg, died at approximately 4:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. William C. Baber.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Mildred M. Bowman

WESTON -- Mildred M. Swisher Bowman, 90, of Route 3, Weston, McGuire Park community, died at 6:45 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2000, in Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston following a brief illness.

She was born April 13, 1909, in Letter Gap, Gilmer County, a daughter of the late Charles and Vinnie Bush Swisher.

Her husband, Virgil F. Bowman, whom she married Nov. 9, 1932, preceded her in death Feb. 4, 1972.

Surviving are four daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Willie Mick, Weston, Winnetta, and Mickey Kennedy, Northfield, Ohio, Rose E. and Mike Powell, Adrian, Mich., and Della J. and Tom Williams, Louisville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Willie Jr., Frank, Randy, and Ted Mick and Warren and Wayne Williams; four great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Jeffrey Mick and Kevin and Kaylin Mick; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, L. Bush Swisher.

Mrs. Bowman was a homemaker and farmwife, living on the Berlin Road. Although confined to her home until recent years, she continued to be knowledgeable of the farm routine. She enjoyed watching the activities from her window-chair where she became interested in bird and sky watching. She was also an avid television watcher. She was a member of the Stonecoal United Methodist Church.

Friends may call at the Boyle Funeral Home, 322 Main Avenue, Weston from 5-8 p.m. Monday. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home chapel with Rev. William Dawson and Rev. Fred Mulneix officiating. Interment will follow in the Weston Masonic Cemetery.

Raymond Crites

BUCKHANNON -- Raymond Crites, 97, of Buckhannon, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at Holbrook Nursing Home in Buckhannon.

He was born Feb. 11, 1903, in Gould, a son of the late Thornton and Clementine Keener Crites.

His wife, Ruth L. Lewis Crites, whom he married Dec. 10, 1926, survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Ruth Tenney, Virginia Beach, Va., and Patty Mayo, Williamstown; two sons, Darell Crites, Annandale, Va., and Carrol Crites, Buckhannon; three grandchildren, Brenda Mohile, Leesburg, Va., Myra Roberts, Centreville, Va., Denise Keeley, Norfolk, Va.; three great-grandchildren, Patrick Mohile, Leesburg, Cory and Crystal Roberts, both of Centreville; and one great-great-grandchild, Emily Ashton, Leesburg.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Lincoln, Rush and Ancil Crites, and three sisters Hazel Board, Sadie Lewis, and Virgie Cobb.

Mr. Crites was a truck driver for the West Virginia Department of Highways. He was a Methodist by faith.

Friends will be received at Poling-Saint Clair Funeral Home from 4-9 p.m. today. Funeral services will be at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Monday with Rev. S.E. Lewis officiating. Burial will be at Upshur County Memorial Park, Tennerton.

Tony Caputo

CLARKSBURG -- Mr. Tony Caputo, 83, of 788 Twin Oaks Drive, Bridgeport, died at 1:05 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 27, 1917, at Mount Clare, a son of the late Pictro and Rosa Gigliotti Caputo.

His wife, Victoria Oliverio Caputo, survives.

Also surviving are one son, James J. Caputo, Winston Salem, N.C.; one daughter, Toni Louise Baker, Puyallup, Wash.; four brothers, John and Joseph Caputo, both of Clarksburg; Dr. Louis Caputo, Melbourne, Fla., and Guy Caputo, Bridgeport; one sister, Mary Mellie, Morgantown; four grandchildren, Chad Baker, Seattle, Wash., Jason Caputo, Winston Salem, N.C., Kristin Caputo, Greensboro, N.C., and Lindsay Baker, Puyallup.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Sam, and Jimmy Caputo.

Mr. Caputo was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, Bridgeport. With his brothers, he owned and operated a family business, Garden Fresh Stores in Clarksburg and other local areas before retiring in 1979.

Friends will be received at the All Saints Catholic Church, Bridgeport from 3-9 p.m. today. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Fr. Harry Cramer as Celebrant. Entombment will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum. A Vigil Service will be at 8:30 p.m. today at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the People's Hospice or the American Cancer Society, United Hospital Center, Clarksburg 26301.

Neva L. Edeburn

CAIRO -- Neva L. Edeburn, 85, of Cairo, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, in Parkersburg.

She was born Dec. 26, 1914, at Mannington, Marion County, a daughter of the late Anthony Smith and Mary Bird Smith Freeman.

Her husband, Eugene J. Edeburn, preceded her in death.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Ronald Neely, Lowell, Ohio, and Linda and Harris Zinn, Mount Clare; six grandchildren, David Neely, New Cumberland, Joseph Neely, Winchester, Va., Kelly Aliberti, Copley, Ohio, Jeremy, Nathaniel, and Cory Zinn, all of Mount Clare; four great-grandchildren, Kathryn, Aaron, and Emily Neely and Isabelle Aliberti; one sister, Wilma Perry, Zephyrhills, Fla.; and one brother, Willis Freeman, Carson, Calif.

She was also preceded in death by one sister, Hester Palmer and one grandson, Richard Neely.

Mrs. Edeburn was a graduate of Mannington High School with the class of 1932, attended Fairmont State College, graduated from West Virginia University in 1936, and taught school in the southern part of West Virginia at Stotebury.

She had actively taken a part in 4-H club work, serving as a leader in Doddridge and Ritchie counties, was a member of the former Cairo Women's Club, and was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star at West Union. She had been honored as parade marshal for the Cairo Days of 1988 and was a member of the Cairo United Methodist Church, where she had taught classes for both youth and adults as well as being the former president of the Women's Missionary Society.

She was the co-owner of the Cairo Supply Company from 1948-1965 and a sole owner until 1996, employing many youth in the area. She had many friends and relatives in the Doddridge and Ritchie county areas who will remember her fondly.

Friends will be received at the Raiguel Funeral Home, Cairo, after 10 a.m. today. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the funeral home with the Rev. Daniel Martin officiating.

Burial will be in the Masonic Memorial Park at Crystal Lake near West Union.

Mabel R. Everson

PHILIPPI -- Mabel R. Cox Everson, 85, of 504 Maple Ave., Philippi, died Saturday morning, Feb. 26, 2000, at her residence.

She was born June 24, 1914, in Barbour County, a daughter of the late Andrew M. and Dora Godwin Cox.

Her husband, Estle D. Everson, whom she married Dec. 28, 1932, preceded her in death Sep. 7, 1978.

Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Roy Mouser, Stow, Ohio, Carol J. and Charlie Rogers, and Mildred "Millie" and Richard Barton, all of Philippi; one daughter-in-law, Penny Everson, Philippi; seven grandchildren, Kim Lewis, Belington, Angie Hodge, Huntington, Mike Mouser, Stow, Ohio, Brad Mouser Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Tammy Martin, Jeff Rogers, and Chad Everson, all of Philippi; and five great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Richard "Rick" Everson; two sisters, Devonia Sinsel Hayhurst and Mildred Anderson; and four brothers, Paul, Kenneth, Clinton, and Gary Cox.

Mrs. Everson was a former member of the Barbour Women's Bowling Association. She was a member of the Philippi Church of Christ.

Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home, 216 North Walnut Street, Philippi after 4 p.m. today. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Evangelist Steve Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Barbour Memorial Cemetery.

Roseann Huey

CLARKSBURG -- Mrs. Roseann Huey, 75, formerly of 306 Cove Court, Clarksburg, died at 12:15 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, in Heartland of Clarksburg.

She was born Jan. 30, 1925, in Philippi, Barbour County, a daughter of the late Homer W. and Zella L. Parks Wolford.

Her husband, Paul S. Huey Jr., whom she married March 30, 1958, preceded her in death June 14, 1982.

Surviving are several cousins.

She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Paula Ann Huey in 1959.

Mrs. Huey was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Clarksburg. She had been a volunteer worker with People's Hospice and was a member of AARP, Harrison County Senior Citizens, and the Ladies of Elks.

She had been employed for 23 years with National Auto, and had worked several years for the Federal Civil Service and with the West Virginia Department of Human Services and retired from Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

There will be no visitation. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Bridgeport Cemetery. Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, Clarksburg is in charge of arrangements.

Karl M. Humberston

FAIRMONT -- Karl M. Humberston, 42, of Orlando, Fla., died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at his residence.

He was born April 15, 1957, in Clarksburg, a son of Leroy and Carolyn Sinsel Humberston of Fairmont.

Also surviving are two sisters and brothers-in-law, the Rev. Bonnie and the Rev. Brian Peltomaa, Crestline, Ohio, and Barbara and Jeff Leatherman, Kent, Wash.; one niece, Anastasia Peltomaa, Crestline, and two nephews, Reed and Neal Leatherman, Kent.

Mr. Humberston was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont. He was a graduate of Fairmont Senior High School, Fairmont.

He served in the 21st Army National Guard in Fairmont and the 646 Army Reserve Unit of Kingwood.

He served in the Stage Hand Union of Orlando, and was active in "convention work" for five years.

The family requests that all memorial donations be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 300 Gaston Ave., Fairmont, WV 26554.

Friends will be received at Ford Funeral Home, 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. Friends will be received at Grace Lutheran Church, Gaston Avenue., Fairmont, from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be held at the church at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. David Rockwood officiating. Burial will follow in the Bridgeport Masonic Cemetery, Bridgeport.

Raymond J. Hurley

CLARKSBURG -- Raymond J. Hurley, 76, of 1732 Adams Avenue, Clarksburg, died Friday Feb. 25, 2000, at his residence with his family at his side following an extended illness with cancer.

He was born Nov. 10, 1923, in Clarksburg, a son of the late Raymond D. and Marguerite E. Evans Hurley.

His wife of 55 years, Mildred M. Alexander Hurley, whom he married July 31, 1944, survives.

Also surviving, are one son, Robert D. Hurley and his companion, Lynda Petty and her daughter, Sarah Petty, all of Burke, Va.; one daughter, Ms. Barbara Baldini and her companion, Phil Parcin, both of Bridgeport; three brothers, James Hurley, Bridgeport, Carl R. Hurley, Cambridge, Mass., and Thomas Hurley, Fairmont; two sisters, Esther Pritchard, Salem, and Betty E. Turner, Cumberland, Md.; three grandchildren, Jeffery C. Martin, Seattle, Wash., Michael T. Hurley, Temple Hills, Md. and Kirsten L. Hurley, Upper Marlboro, Md.; one great-grandson, Kaleb M. Hurley, Temple Hills; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Robert R., John L. "Jack", David H. and Ralph Hurley, and one sister, Mary Wanstreet.

Mr. Hurley was a graduate of Victory High School, Class of 1941. His career spanned 40 years in the local flat glass industry. His first position as a box builder was with the Rolland Glass Company. He later moved to the Adamston Flat Glass factory, which became the West Virginia Flat Glass Co. in 1980 and he remained at that plant, as plant manager, until his retirement.

During the early years, Mr. Hurley had the opportunity to learn every aspect of the flat glass manufacturing process and enjoyed working with his father and several of his brothers. He was always quick to assist when someone needed help and will surely be remembered for the many hours he gave to the success of these companies and the friendships he had from them.

Upon retirement, "Ray" stayed active by working with his close friend, John Morano, in the refurbishment business until a health condition prevented his participation. He was active in the cardiac rehabilitation services at United Hospital Center and former member of the Harrison County Heart Association. He was a Protestant by faith.

Friends may call at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main Street, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today and from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday with Rev. O.D. Harman conducting. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Masonic Cemetery.

Doris A. Jones

HARRISVILLE -- Doris N. "Alabama" Abrams Jones, 87, of Parkersburg died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at Saint Joseph's Hospital, Parkersburg.

She was born Nov. 17, 1912, in Mobile, Ala., a daughter of the late Charles E. and Cora A. Arnold Abrams.

Her husband, Kenneth P. Jones, preceded her in death.

Surviving are three sons, Edward A. Downie, Jerry V. Jones, both of Columbus, Ohio, and Kenneth P. Downie, Parkersburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Judy C. and Don Bowen, Toledo, Ohio; three stepchildren, Darrell Jones, Helen Nolan, both of Baltimore Md. and Bonnie Parish, Pennsboro; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by one stepson, Wade Jones; three brothers, L.E. Claude and William Abrams; and one sister, Ruby.

Mrs. Jones was raised in Mobile, Ala. and moved to West Virginia after World War II. She worked for many years at Economy Industries, Harrisville and was a nurses aide at Saint Joseph's Hospital.

She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Parkersburg and also attended church in Marietta.

Friends will be received at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Parkersburg after 6:30 p.m. Monday and from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday. The funeral services will be held at the church at 11 a.m. Tuesday with Pastor Throstur Thordarson officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethany Cemetery at Goffs outside Harrisville.

Forney M. Mayle

GRAFTON -- Forney M. Mayle, 82, of Clawson, Mich., died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at his residence following an extended illness.

He was born Sept. 14, 1917, in Barbour County, a son of the late William R. and Gretchen Kennedy Mayle.

His second wife, Alma Decost Mayle, whom he married Jan 14, 1967, survives in Royal Oak, Mich. His first wife, Hilda Kennedy Mayle, preceded him in death in 1964.

Also surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Delmas and Kristie Mayle, Howell, Mich., Joe and Sarah Collins, Dearborn, Mich., and Fred and Linda Collins, Canton, Ohio; four daughters and sons-in-law, Charlotte and Allen Mayle, West Branch, Mich., Sherry and Jeff Gordon, Oxford, Mich., Gaye and Dale Bennett, Warren, Mich., and Marva J. and Kenneth Mayle, Madison Heights, Mich.; one brother, Marvin Mayle, Uniontown, Pa.; 19 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Orman Mayle.

Mr. Mayle retired in 1980 from the Ford Motor Company where he worked for 37 1/2 years at the Utica Trim Plant. Other interests were watching baseball, riding bicycles and walking.

He will be remembered as an outgoing and friendly person, with a fine sense of humor. He was close to his family, taking care of their every need. He loved to travel to West Virginia and visit family and friends. He was a Methodist by faith.

Friends will be received at the Bartlett Funeral Home, 202 McGraw Avenue, Grafton, from 2-9 p.m. Monday. He will lie in state from 10-11 a.m. at the West Hill Church, with the service at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Mr. Winfield Mayle officiating.

Pauline Rice

SHINNSTON -- Pauline Rice, 89, of Enterprise, died suddenly at 11:01 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000 in the United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.

She was born Sept. 5, 1910, at Wyatt, a daughter of the late James F. Martin and Maggie E. Eddy Martin Walls.

Her husband, Clarence Rice, preceded her in death Jul. 22, 1992.

Surviving are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Tom Rice and Bill and Donna Rice, all of Enterprise; seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having also been preceded in death by one son, Loren Rice; one daughter, Ruth Ramsey; three brothers; and one grandson.

The funeral will be held at the Dorsey Funeral Home in Shinnston at 1 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Austin Burrough officiating. Interment will follow in the Elizabeth Mason Memorial Cemetery.

Robert F. White

WESTON -- Robert F. White, 89, of 98 North 8th Street, Wheeling, formerly of 264 West 4th Street, Weston died at 11 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, in the Bishop Hodges Continuous Care Nursing Home of Wheeling following an extended illness.

He was born Feb. 5, 1911, in Gilmer County, a son of the late Alpha E. and Genevieve Carson White.

His wife of 64 years, the former Sarah K. Davisson, whom he married Sep. 14, 1935, survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Kathryn A. Weisenseel, Weston and Roberta S. Mathew's, Warren, Ohio; one son, Rondall R. White, Wheeling; one sister, Mary V. Davisson, Murraysville; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Robert J. White; his stepmother, Belva Coberly White; and four brothers, Virgil A. and Howard D. White and two infant brothers.

Mr. White was an employee of Pennzoil with 40 years and 3 months service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Weston.

Friends will be received at the Floyd Funeral Home, 402 Main Avenue, Weston from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday and from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home chapel with Rev. Hugh Murphy officiating. Interment will follow in the Peterson Cemetery, Weston.

Alice P. Wolfe

SHINNSTON -- Alice P. Wolfe, 65, of Lincoln Drive, Shinnston died at 9:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, in the Meadowview Manor, Bridgeport, following an extended illness.

She was born Jun. 27, 1934, at Fort Ashby, a daughter of the late Melvin and Leatha Hogben Shipe.

Surviving are two sons, Jim and Mike Wolfe, both of Shinnston; five grandchildren, one brother, Melvin R. Shipe, Cleveland, Ohio; one sister, Rita Friend, Keyser.

Mrs. Wolfe was a homemaker and was a member of the Shinnston Moose, Ladies Auxiliary.

Friends may call at the Dorsey Funeral Home, Shinnston, from 2-7 p.m. Monday, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday with Pastor Tim Sandy officiating. Interment will be in the I.O.O.F Cemetery, Enterprise.
