League leading Tigers top D&E; women lose

ELKINS -- Led by another balanced scoring effort, West Virginia Conference leader Salem International downed Davis & Elkins, 86-65, on Thursday.

Chucky Fine led the Tigers (17-2, 9-2 WVC) with 18 points, followed by Donnie Johnson (16), Phil McKnight (11) and Kenia Williams (10). Salem jumped to a 43-31 halftime lead and held off D&E (7-11, 4-7).

The Tigers enjoyed one of their finest shooting performances of the season. Salem connected on 51 percent of its shots (30 of 58), including 11-of-22 shooting from 3-point range.

D&E, meanwhile connected on just seven of 29 3-pointers.

Jabari Ray led the Senators with 18 points. Andy Collins scored 14, and Pat Caufield and Dmitriy Anoshin each added 10.

Salem International plays host to Concord at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

n SIU WOMEN LOSE: Morgan Johnson led four Davis & Elkins scorers in double digits with 19 points in the Senators' 67-63 victory over Salem International.

Grace Cyphert added 14 points for D&E (8-9, 5-5), followed by Nadia Abbondanza with 12 and Whitney Grove with 10. D&E shot 54 percent from the floor (25 of 46).
